ID.me verification issues with NY unemployment - can't upload SS card photo
I'm totally stuck trying to verify my identity for NY unemployment using ID.me. When I get to the part where I need to upload my social security card, I keep getting an error message saying "can't find a pic" after I take the photo. I've tried like 10 times already! Has anyone else had this problem? Do I even need to send my SS# through the NYC ID section or am I doing something wrong? This is so frustrating and I'm worried my benefits will be delayed.

had the same issue last week. the lighting in the room matters A LOT. try taking the pic with better lighting and make sure the card is on a dark background so the numbers stand out.

•Thanks! I'll try that. My apartment has terrible lighting. Should I use flash or no flash?

The ID.me verification process for NY unemployment requires your Social Security card in the document verification section, not the NYC ID section. When uploading your SS card, make sure that: 1. All four corners of the card are visible 2. There's no glare on the card (matte surfaces work better than glossy tables) 3. The image is clear and not blurry 4. You're using the latest version of your browser 5. You've cleared your cache if you've had multiple failed attempts If you continue to have problems, ID.me offers a video chat verification option where you can show your documents to a live representative.

•Ohhhh I was putting it in the wrong section! That makes sense. I'll try the document verification part instead. Thanks so much!

What if you don't have your social security card?? I lost mine years ago and never got a replacement. Now I'm panicking because I need to verify for my NY unemployment too. Will they accept my tax forms that show my SSN instead??

•ID.me will accept other documents with your SSN. You can use a W-2, pay stub, or your 1099 from the previous year. Make sure the document clearly shows your full SSN and your name. If you're still having troubles, select the video chat verification option, and the representative can help determine which documents will work in your specific case.

I was stuck on the ID.me verification for DAYS last month trying to get through to someone. The site kept crashing, and when I called, I was on hold forever. I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get a callback from ID.me support. They have this video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE The ID.me rep helped me troubleshoot my specific issue with the document upload and walked me through the whole process. Saved me so much frustration!

•That's really helpful. I'm going to try the suggestions above first, but if I still can't get through, I'll definitely check out that service. Just want to get this verification done ASAP so my benefits don't get held up!

the whole id.me thing is RIDICULOUS!! why do they make it so complicated?? i had to try like 20 times to get my license pic to upload. TWENTY TIMES!! the system is designed to make people give up!!!

•Right?! It's like they don't want us to actually get our benefits. I think they hope people will just get frustrated and stop trying. Took me 3 days to finish the whole verification process.

To properly complete the ID.me verification for NY unemployment in 2025, you need to follow these steps: 1. Create or log into your ID.me account 2. Select the document verification option 3. Choose to verify with your primary ID (usually driver's license) 4. Then select secondary verification (this is where your SS card comes in) 5. When taking photos of documents, ensure: - All text is clearly visible - No shadows or glare on the document - All four corners are visible in the frame - The background contrasts with the document (white card on dark surface) The system is sensitive to image quality because of security concerns. If you continue having issues, use their "Video Chat Verification" option, which connects you with a live representative who can manually verify your documents.

•This is super helpful! I didn't realize I needed to do the primary ID verification first. I'll try again following these exact steps and hopefully it works.

Is anyone else worried about giving all these personal documents to ID.me? I mean I need my benefits but it feels like a lot of sensitive info to upload to some third-party company I'd never heard of until NY unemployment required it.

•ID.me is a legitimate identity verification service contracted by many government agencies, including the NYSDOL. They use bank-level encryption to protect your data. While I understand the concern, this is the required verification process for NY unemployment claims in 2025. Without completing it, benefits will remain on hold.

UPDATE: I finally got it to work! I was definitely putting it in the wrong section. And the lighting tip was super helpful too. I put my SS card on a dark blue towel and made sure all four corners were visible. Thanks everyone for your help! My verification is processing now.

•They said 24-48 hours for the verification to complete. Fingers crossed it all goes smoothly from here!
