ID.me photo upload not working for NY unemployment verification - help!
I'm trying to verify my identity for NY unemployment through ID.me but having major problems. When I get to the part where I need to upload pictures of my documents (license and SS card), nothing happens when I click the upload button. The circle just spins for a second then stops. I've tried on my phone and laptop, using Chrome and Safari, but same issue everywhere. Has anyone else had this problem with ID.me? My claim is pending and I really need to get this verification done asap!

•Thanks, I'll try clearing my cache. My phone is pretty new though (just got it 3 months ago) so that shouldn't be the issue. Did you eventually get yours to work?

This is a common issue with ID.me's verification process for NY unemployment claims. Here are some troubleshooting steps that should help: 1. Make sure your images are under 10MB in size 2. Try using the ID.me app instead of the website 3. If using WiFi, try switching to cellular data or vice versa 4. Disable any ad blockers or privacy extensions in your browser 5. Try the "basic upload" option if it's available (sometimes appears after multiple failed attempts) If none of these work, you can request a video call verification instead - look for the small link at the bottom of the upload page that says something like "verify another way".

•Thank you for these tips! I didn't realize there was a file size limit. My photos might be too large. I'll try the app too - didn't even know they had one.

I had EXACTLY this problem in January!!! So frustrating!!! I tried for THREE DAYS to upload my docs and it kept failing. Turns out my internet connection wasn't stable enough even tho it seemed fine for everything else. I ended up having to go to my sisters house to use her internet and it worked first try there. So maybe try a different internet connection if possible?

•That's interesting, I do have kind of spotty WiFi sometimes. I'll try going somewhere with better internet if the other suggestions don't work. Three days sounds awful - I'm already anxious about getting my benefits delayed.

The ID.me system can be challenging, but here are some specific technical solutions: 1. The photo upload requires JavaScript to be fully enabled. Check your browser settings. 2. Temporary files folder must not be full - try restarting your device. 3. The NYSDOL integration with ID.me requires a session cookie that sometimes fails to load. Log out completely, close the browser, then try again. 4. When taking photos, ensure adequate lighting and use a plain background. 5. If you're using iPhone, sometimes the photo permissions need to be reset. Go to Settings > Privacy > Photos and toggle ID.me off and on. If you're still stuck, ID.me offers video verification, but wait times can be 2-3 hours currently due to high volume.

•I'd add that if you continue having problems, you might want to try Claimyr to reach a NY unemployment agent directly. I was stuck on ID.me issues for a week, then used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got through to an agent who could help override the verification requirement in my case. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE - saved me tons of time and frustration.

Did you try turning off your phone completely and restarting it? That helped me. Also, sometimes their system is just DOWN even though they don't admit it. I had to try at like 6 AM before it actually worked. Something about less users on the system then?

•I haven't tried a full restart yet, so I'll definitely do that. And trying early morning is a good idea! I've been trying in the afternoon which is probably peak time.

id.me is THE WORST!!!! i spent 5 hours trying to verify and finally had to do video call which took ANOTHER 3 hours in queue. ny unemployment needs to find a better system this is ridiculous. good luck op hope u get it figured out faster than i did

•While ID.me has its challenges, it has significantly reduced fraud in the unemployment system. For context, NYSDOL implemented it in 2025 after losing millions to identity theft schemes in 2024. The system actually works well for about 85% of users - those having issues are more vocal online, which is understandable. If you're having problems, contacting their support directly at support@id.me can sometimes get faster resolution than waiting in the video queue.

Hey did you ever get this resolved? I'm having the same exact problem now and tried everything people suggested here with no luck 😩

•Yes! Actually two things worked for me. First, I used the app instead of the website (much better interface). Second, I reduced the resolution on my camera before taking the photos - the file size was the main issue. Got approved within a day after that!

i just remembered something else - make sure ur actually using the camera to take pics right then not uploading pics u already took. when i was doing it id.me kept rejecting photos from my gallery but worked fine when i took new ones directly in their system

•That's a great tip! I was definitely trying to upload existing photos from my gallery. I'll try taking them directly in the app.

Update: I just went through this whole process last week and discovered something that might help others. If the regular ID.me verification keeps failing, you can actually call NY unemployment directly and request an alternative verification method. The catch is actually getting someone on the phone - which was impossible until I tried Claimyr. I got through in about 30 minutes instead of spending days on the ID.me system. Just sharing what worked for me! Check out their demo: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•does this claimyr thing actually work? i've seen it mentioned before but seemed sketchy to me. not sure about paying to talk to unemployment when its supposed to be free??

Just wanted to say thank you to everyone who replied here. I was having the same issue and tried the ID.me app instead of the website as suggested, and it worked perfectly. Got my verification done and my claim is now processing! This forum is so helpful.

•That's great to hear! The app worked for me too - much smoother experience than the website.

I just went through this same nightmare last month! What finally worked for me was using a different device entirely - I borrowed my roommate's tablet and it went through on the first try. Sometimes ID.me just doesn't play nice with certain device/browser combinations for reasons nobody can explain. Also make sure you're not using any VPN or proxy - that can mess with their location verification. If you're still stuck, try doing it at a different time of day too. I found early morning (like 7-8 AM) worked better than peak hours when their servers are probably overloaded. Hope this helps!

•That's really helpful about trying a different device! I never would have thought of that. The VPN tip is good too - I actually do use one sometimes for work so I'll make sure to turn it off when I try again. It's crazy how finicky this system is, but at least there are workarounds. Thanks for sharing what worked for you!

I just want to add something that helped me when I was stuck on the ID.me verification for weeks - if you have any browser extensions running (especially password managers, ad blockers, or privacy tools like Ghostery), try disabling ALL of them temporarily. I know it sounds like overkill, but ID.me's upload system is really sensitive to anything that might interfere with their scripts. I was pulling my hair out until I tried a completely clean browser session with no extensions, and suddenly everything worked. Also, if you're on mobile, try enabling "Desktop Site" mode in your browser - sometimes their mobile interface has bugs that the desktop version doesn't have. The whole system is frustrating but there are definitely ways around the technical issues!
