NY unemployment ID.me verification stuck after taking pictures - can't proceed with claim
So frustrating! I started a new unemployment claim last week and got redirected to do the ID.me verification. I uploaded all my docs and took the selfie pictures they asked for. After submitting the pics, the system just freezes and won't let me continue. I've tried refreshing, logging out and back in, even tried different browsers (Chrome and Firefox). Still stuck on the same screen for 3 days now. My rent is due in two weeks and I need to get this claim processed. Has anyone else dealt with this ID.me nightmare? What am I supposed to do now?

Yup, ID.me is probably the worst part of the entire NY unemployment process. I had the exact same issue back in October. What worked for me was clearing my browser cache completely, then trying again on Chrome in incognito mode. Somehow that fixed the weird glitch.

Thanks for the tip! I just tried incognito mode and it's still stuck. Did you have to wait a certain amount of time before trying again?

I waited like 24 hours then tried again. Maybe their system needs time to process? idk the whole thing is such a mess 🤷♂️

After struggling for weeks with the same ID.me nightmare, I finally found a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got through to an actual human at unemployment who manually pushed my verification through. Talking to an agent got my benefits flowing within days - best decision ever after banging my head against the wall with the online system. Check out this video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

100% real. I was skeptical too but after 3 weeks of trying to get someone on the phone myself with no luck, I was desperate. They called and got me connected to an agent in about 45 mins. The agent was able to see that my ID.me was actually completed but just not updating in their system.

Yep! I know it sounds like I'm shilling but I'm just another desperate person who found something that worked. The phone system is designed to make you give up I swear.

OMG the ID.me thing is the WORST. Mine kept saying "we cannot verify your identity" after I submitted everything. I had to do the video call verification with a "trusted referee" which took FOREVER (like 5 hour wait). Try clicking the option for video verification if you're completely stuck.

I work in IT and heres what ID.me does - it stores your session cookies in a way that sometimes conflicts with browser settings. Try these steps: 1. Clear ALL cookies and cache 2. Disable any adblockers or privacy extensions 3. Try in a complete different browser (Edge if you normally use Chrome) 4. Make sure your camera permissions are enabled 5. Check if your photos meet their requirements (proper lighting, clear image) If all else fails, you CAN call ID.me directly at 866-775-4363. Long wait times but they can reset your verification process. Alternatively, if you need to talk to an actual NY unemployment rep, check out claimyr.com - they'll get you through the phone system to a live agent who can push things through on their end.

Thank you so much for this detailed explanation! I'll try these steps tonight. Do you know if there's a limit to how many times you can attempt the verification?

No hard limit that I know of, but if you fail too many times (like 3-4) they might lock you into the video verification path. Which isn't terrible, just time consuming.

Have you checked if your browser is outdated? ID.me kept freezing on me and it turned out my ancient version of chrome was the problem lol. Updated and suddenly everything worked.

idk if this will fix it but heres what i did when NOTHING else worked. I contacted ID.me on twitter (weird i know) but they have support there and they reset something on their end. worth trying if ur desperate

That's actually a really good idea, I hadn't thought of social media. Did they respond quickly?

FWIW during my ID.me nightmare I was able to learn that sometimes their facial recognition system has trouble with certain lighting conditions and glasses. Try taking your verification photos: - In natural light (not direct sunlight) - Without glasses if you wear them - Against a plain background - Make sure nothing is covering any part of your face Seems stupid but these little things made a difference for me.

This!! I have darker skin and their system kept failing until I basically stood in front of a window with full daylight. Ridiculous that their tech can't handle different skin tones properly 🙄

Not to sound paranoid but i've noticed ID.me glitching more when the unemployment system is overloaded. Might be worth waiting til late night or very early morning to try again when server load is lower. I did mine at 5am and sailed right through after days of issues.

What device r u using? The ID.me system on mobile is a DISASTER. I couldn't get past the photo stage on my phone but when I switched to laptop everything worked immediately. They need to fix their mobile interface for real.

I've been using my laptop the whole time, but maybe I should try my phone instead? Seems like different things work for different people.

Here's what ACTUALLY worked for me after being stuck in ID.me hell for over a week: 1. The ID.me system has major technical issues that their support won't admit to 2. The verification process times out but doesn't tell you 3. You need to completely start over (not just refresh) 4. NY unemployment office CAN override the ID.me requirement in some cases The only way I got this resolved was getting on the phone with an actual human at unemployment who could see the status of my verification and manually move my claim forward. After countless failed attempts to call, I used claimyr.com to get through - they kept dialing and got me a callback when an agent was available. The agent saw that my ID was actually verified on their end despite the ID.me site showing an error. Worth every penny to get my claim moving after weeks of delays. Don't waste days fighting with the ID.me technical issues - just get to a human who can check your status in the actual system.

THIS!!! 👆 The exact same thing happened to me. ID.me showed errors but the agent could see I was verified. The whole system is broken

Interesting - sounds like there's a sync issue between ID.me and the unemployment database. Classic government tech integration problems.

This is super helpful info. Did the agent say anything about how common this problem is? I'm wondering if I should just try to get through to someone on the phone right away instead of fighting with the website.

The agent told me they see this daily. Said about 30% of people have some kind of ID.me issue that needs manual intervention. The systems just don't talk to each other correctly.

have u checked ur email? sometimes id.me sends a confirmation link there that u need to click even tho the site doesnt tell u to check. I was stuck for days until I found the email buried in my spam folder 🤦♀️

Just checked - nothing in regular inbox or spam. That would've been an easy fix! Thanks for the suggestion though.

NY unemployment and ID.me are a match made in hell. Both systems are buggy 24/7 and nobody takes responsibility. I got my issue fixed by joining one of those Facebook groups for unemployment help - there's a few admins who used to work for NYSDOL and they have connections to escalate cases. Can't remember the exact group name but search for NY unemployment help group with 20k+ members.

I feel your pain so hard. My ID.me verification got stuck in February and I literally had to start my entire claim over from scratch after waiting 3 weeks with no movement. If I had known about claimyr.com back then I would've saved myself so much stress. When I finally did connect with an agent they fixed everything in like 10 minutes. The system is designed to be frustrating on purpose, I swear.

seriously they make it complicated on purpose to get people to give up. my conspiracy theory lol

It's not even a conspiracy at this point! When I finally got through, the agent admitted the system is designed to have 'friction points' (their actual words) to reduce claims. Made me so angry.

Try a different photo ID if you have one. My drivers license kept getting rejected but my passport worked instantly. No idea why but something about certain IDs just doesn't work with their system.

Not to add more frustration but this exact issue has been happening since ID.me and NY unemployment started working together. Its insane that they haven't fixed it yet. I had to go to my state rep's office for help after being stuck for over a month. They have special contacts at unemployment who can bypass the ID.me requirement.

Whoa, that's a good idea. How did you contact your state rep? Just called their office?

Yep, called the local office and explained the situation. They have staff dedicated to helping with state agency issues. They were super helpful.

protip: the ID.me help chat is actually way more helpful than calling. go to help.id.me and start a chat session. wait time is usually shorter than phone and they can reset your verification on the spot
