NY unemployment making me verify ID.me TWICE - stuck in loop
I lost my job at the end of November due to downsizing. Started the unemployment process mid-December and got through most of the application steps. When I got to the ID verification part, I completed the whole ID.me process (took pictures of my license, did the video selfie thing, answered all those security questions). The system confirmed my identity was verified and told me to continue with my claim application today. But when I logged back in this morning to finish filing, the system is now asking me to do the ENTIRE ID.me verification AGAIN! I've already spent like 40 minutes doing this yesterday and now it won't recognize that I completed it. Anyone else get stuck in this stupid verification loop? Is the system just broken or am I missing something? I need to get my claim processed asap since rent is coming up and I'm running out of savings.

same thing happened to me in October! had to verify my ID like 3 times before the system finally let me continue. the weird thing is that after the third time it didn't even ask me to do anything different - just randomly decided to work 🙄 NY unemployment system is complete garbage

did you have to wait between attempts? I'm wondering if there's like a 24 hour processing time or something

i waited like 2 days between my second and third try. not on purpose, i was just so annoyed i stepped away from it. maybe that helped? idk their system is trash

Ugh thanks for this. I'll try waiting a couple days and see if that helps. This is so frustrating!

After weeks of trying to deal with this exact issue (and like 20 failed calls to their customer service), I finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual human at unemployment. They fixed the ID.me loop issue for me in like 5 minutes once I actually talked to someone. Talking to an agent got my benefits unlocked so fast - it was the only way I could get past this stupid verification glitch. They have a demo video here: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different? sounds like one of those ads that pops up everywhere.

nah this actually works. it just calls for you and stays on hold, then connects you when a real person picks up. literally saved me days of being on hold. my backpay came through 3 days after i talked to someone

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? NY unemployment phones are IMPOSSIBLE to get through on

I was skeptical too but was desperate after 3 weeks of this ID verification loop. The service just automates the hold process so you don't have to sit there listening to that awful music for hours. worth every penny when I was about to lose my mind trying to reach someone

I HAD THIS EXACT PROBLEM!! It's because their system doesn't properly integrate with ID.me - the verification happens on ID.me's side but doesn't always register with NY unemployment's ancient system. Try clearing your browser cache/cookies and using a different browser (I switched from Chrome to Firefox and it worked). Also try doing it at a weird time like 5am when the system isn't overloaded.

Sadly this isn't a new issue with NY unemployment. Their ID verification has been broken since they "upgraded" their system last spring. Here's what worked for me: 1) Try using the mobile site instead of desktop (or vice versa if you're on mobile) 2) Use a completely different device if possible 3) Make sure you're using a stable internet connection - their system times out easily 4) After verifying on ID.me, wait at least 12 hours before returning to the unemployment site 5) If all else fails, you need to call - I used claimyr.com to get through after days of busy signals Their system doesn't properly sync with ID.me, but an agent can manually verify that you completed the ID check. I spent almost 3 weeks dealing with this before finally getting through to someone who fixed it in literally 2 minutes. Good luck! The system is terrible but once you get through the verification hurdle, the rest is usually smoother.

this is really helpful, tysm! does waiting the 12 hours really matter? i'm so anxious to get this done

Yeah the 12 hour wait seemed critical for me - I think their system has some delay in processing the verification. And fyi if you do need to call, prepare for a nightmare unless you use a service. I wasted 3 days trying to get through myself.

try using incognito mode! the id.me verification puts cookies on ur browser and sometimes it conflicts. worked for me back in September when I had the same issue

Will try this tomorrow! Thanks for the suggestion

the ny unemployment site is a dumpster fire 🔥 i swear they make it complicated on purpose to discourage people from claiming benefits. had this same issue last year and ended up having to call over and over for days until I finally got through.

💯 they do this on purpose!! friend who works in government told me they literally design it to be frustrating so people give up

exactly! and then they can brag about how they "reduced unemployment claims" when really they just made it impossible to apply 🙄

Not to be that person, but check your email from ID.me - they usually send a confirmation. Take a screenshot of that and when you call (which unfortunately you'll probably need to do), have that ready to show you already completed verification. The whole system is held together with digital duct tape lol.

I think I finally figured out the pattern after dealing with this twice. The ID.me process works, but the NY unemployment system doesn't instantly recognize it. Wait 24-48 hours, then try again WITHOUT redoing the ID.me part - just skip it if possible or close the browser when it redirects you there. If that doesn't work, try on a completely different device. Last resort is calling - which is its own special nightmare with NY unemployment 😭

how do you skip the ID.me part if it keeps redirecting you there? that's where I'm stuck

sometimes if you close the browser when it tries to redirect and then immediately log back in, it'll let you continue. seems like a weird caching issue or something

My brother went thru this last month. He had to contact his state assemblyman's office and they helped push it through. The system is completely broken but the local govt offices sometimes have special contacts to help. worth a try if you're stuck in the loop for more than a week.

LISTEN UP EVERYONE - THIS IS A KNOWN BUG WITH NY UNEMPLOYMENT The issue is that ID.me and NY's system don't talk to each other correctly. What's happening is your verification IS working on ID.me's side but the confirmation isn't getting back to NY's system. Here's what ACTUALLY works (I work in IT and spent hours figuring this out): 1. After completing ID.me verification, wait AT LEAST 24 hours (their systems batch process overnight) 2. Clear all browser data completely (or use a different device entirely) 3. Try logging in again using a different browser than you used before 4. If it still redirects to ID.me, DON'T verify again - instead call NY unemployment The fastest way to get someone on the phone is using claimyr.com - it's the only way I've found to reliably get through their phone system without spending days on hold. Once you get an agent on the phone, tell them you've already completed ID.me verification but the system keeps asking you to verify again. They can override it on their end. This glitch has been happening since they "upgraded" their system last year and they still haven't fixed it!

Yeah it is - it just automates the calling and holding process. Been recommended on this sub many times. The NY unemployment phone system is designed to frustrate people into giving up, so having something that handles the hold time is worth it.

Its such bull that we have to jump through all these hoops just to get the benefits we're entitled to. The ID.me thing is annoying but I had a similar issue last winter. You gotta just keep trying diff browsers and devices until something works. The mobile site worked when desktop kept failing for me.

Try logging in from a different device entirely. My laptop kept getting stuck in the loop but when I tried from my phone it somehow worked. The ny unemployment site is held together with spit and prayers i stg

if you have Twitter, try messaging the NYSDOL account directly. surprisingly they sometimes respond and can help fix account issues like this. worked for my roommate when he had a similar problem

this actually works! their social media team seems separate from their horrible phone support. got my issue fixed in 2 days after DMing them

ok so hear me out - this is gonna sound weird but it worked for me. If it keeps making you verify through ID.me, go through the process again BUT use a slightly different spelling of your name or address (like use Ave instead of Avenue, or Robert instead of Bob). For some reason this created a new ID.me verification that actually linked properly with my NY unemployment account. The verification still worked because my ID was correct, but the slight difference somehow bypassed the glitch.

this is either genius or terrible advice lol. wouldn't this cause problems later if your info doesn't match exactly?

surprisingly no! the ID verification is based on your documents and face match. the text fields are just for their system. as long as your actual ID is valid, the slight text differences don't matter

I'm an ID.me ambassador (we help people with verification issues). This is a SUPER common problem with NY unemployment specifically. Their system doesn't properly receive the verification token from ID.me. If you've already verified once, DO NOT do it again - it can sometimes flag your account for fraud review which delays things even more. Instead, contact NY unemployment directly and tell them you've completed ID.me verification but their system isn't recognizing it. They need to manually push it through on their end.

omg thank you for this info! is there a direct number to reach someone who can help with this specific issue?

Unfortunately no special number - just the main unemployment line. But when you get an agent, specifically mention the 'ID.me token verification error' - they'll know what that means and can usually fix it quickly.
