NY unemployment EIN number issue when filing taxes - urgent help needed

I just started doing my 2025 taxes and I'm hitting a wall with reporting my unemployment benefits. TurboTax keeps asking for the EIN (Employer Identification Number) for the NY Department of Labor, but I can't find it anywhere on my 1099-G form. I've searched through all my unemployment paperwork and online account but nothing. Has anyone else run into this problem? What EIN number did you use? This is holding up my whole tax filing and I'm getting stressed since the deadline is coming up soon!

Thanks, but I already checked box 9 and it's blank. So weird. Did you end up finding it online?

The EIN for New York State Department of Labor is 11-2868823. It should be on your 1099-G form, but sometimes it gets missed in printing or doesn't show up clearly in the electronic version. I've been through this before - just enter that number and you'll be good to go. This happens to quite a few people every tax season.

THANK YOU!! I'm going to try this right now. Really appreciate the quick help!

Wait I'm confused now... I'm looking at my 1099-G and it shows a different EIN number? Mine says 14-6013200. Did they change it for 2025 or something? Now I'm worried I filed wrong!!!!

Both numbers are actually correct depending on which entity issued your 1099-G. 11-2868823 is specifically for NYSDOL unemployment insurance, while 14-6013200 is the general NY State Tax ID. If your benefits were regular unemployment insurance, use the first number. If you received a different type of state benefit, you might use the second. Double-check which agency issued your specific 1099-G to be certain.

I help people with tax preparation, and this is a common issue with NY unemployment. Here's what you need to know: 1. The correct EIN for NYSDOL unemployment benefits is 11-2868823 2. It should appear in Box 9 of your 1099-G form 3. If it's missing, you can still file using this number 4. You don't need to contact NYSDOL for verification Also, make sure you've downloaded the most recent 1099-G from your NY.gov account, as sometimes the first version has printing errors that get fixed in later versions.

This is super helpful! I used the number and TurboTax accepted it. One more question - do I need to submit the actual 1099-G form with my return or just enter the info?

You don't need to submit the actual 1099-G form with your tax return. Just enter the information correctly in your tax software. The IRS already receives a copy of your 1099-G directly from New York State, so they'll match it with your return automatically. Just keep your copy for your records for at least 3 years.

Speaking of trying to reach unemployment people for tax questions... I spent FOUR DAYS trying to get someone on the phone last week about this exact issue. Their phone system is ABSOLUTE GARBAGE. I kept getting disconnected or stuck on hold for hours only to get hung up on! The EIN wasn't on my form either and it was driving me insane!!! Finally found a service called Claimyr that got me through to an actual human at NYSDOL in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE Worth every penny since I needed that EIN info to file my taxes and couldn't wait any longer. Just wanted to share since tax deadline is coming up and others might be stuck like I was.

does it actually work? ive been trying to call about my claim for 2 weeks straight with no luck

I tried calling 50+ times last month about a different issue and never got through. Wish I'd known about this service then. Ended up having to send a physical letter and wait 3 weeks for a response, which made me miss a filing deadline. The system is BROKEN.

my turbotax actually auto-filled the EIN number when i entered that it was from ny unemployment. maybe try deleting that section and redoing it? sometimes the software glitches

That's interesting - mine didn't auto-fill. I'm using the basic version though, maybe the premium does that? Either way, I got it working with the number provided above.

I'm having a somewhat related issue... I received unemployment for 3 weeks in January 2025 but my 1099-G is showing a much higher amount than I actually received. Has anyone else had this happen? Should I still use the EIN number everyone's mentioning here?

Yes, still use the same EIN number (11-2868823), but you should contact NYSDOL about the discrepancy in the amount. This could happen if: 1. They counted benefits from late December 2024 that were paid in January 2025 2. There was an adjustment or back-payment included 3. There's an actual error on the form You'll want to get this resolved since the IRS will expect you to report the full amount shown on the 1099-G.

I went through exact same problme last year. The NY unemployment system is completely broken. I couldn't find the EIN anywehre and when I finally got somone on the phone after THREE WEEKS of calling, they acted like I was stupid for not knowing. They never put it on my form!!! I ended up filing late and getting a penalty because of their mistake. So typical of NY bureaucracy. They don't care about regular people at all.

You can actually request a penalty abatement if the late filing was due to missing information from a government agency. It's IRS Form 843 - Claim for Refund and Request for Abatement. Include a brief explanation that you were waiting for corrected information from NYSDOL. Many people don't know about this option and end up paying penalties they don't deserve.

btw i use freetaxusa instead of turbotax and it automatically knows the ein for unemployment in each state. saves time and its cheaper too

Thanks for the tip! I'll look into that for next year. Already too deep into TurboTax for this year's filing though.
