Just found out the best times to call ny unemployment from an agent

So I needed to talk to someone about a missing payment issue that's been going on since February. I finally got through to an agent today. After resolving my issue (thankfully!), the lady was super nice and gave me some insider info. She mentioned that most representatives are available on the queue between 11:45am-1:30pm and then again from 3:30-5:45pm (right before they close). Thought I'd share this with everyone who's struggling to get through. The mornings are apparently when they have meetings and training, and late afternoon some reps leave early. The midday and end-of-day windows are when most agents are actually working the phones. Hope this helps someone else get through faster!

Thanks for the tip. Been trying to reach them for 3 weeks about my claim that got flagged for some reason. Will try those timeframes tomorrow.

3 weeks? amateur numbers lol. try 2 months of calling 😭

Update: tried calling at 12:15 today. Still on hold for 45 minutes before I had to hang up for a job interview. This system is broken beyond repair.

After spending literally 4 days trying to get a human on the phone, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that calls for you and connects when a real person answers. Talking to an agent got my payment released in 10 minutes after weeks of nothing. Best money I've spent to finally get my benefits paid! Check out their explainer vid here: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

wait is this for real? ive never heard of this before. sounds too good to be true tbh

β€’

Yeah it's real. I was skeptical at first too but I was desperate after wasting so many hours on hold. They just call for you and alert you when someone picks up. Saved me from losing my mind with that hold music 🀣

β€’

yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? πŸ™„

0 coins

Zara Khan

β€’

No catch that I found. They just call and wait on hold instead of you having to do it. You still talk to the same unemployment reps yourself when they connect you.

0 coins

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? the ny unemployment phone system makes me wanna throw my phone out the window

β€’

It worked for me, but don't take my word for it. Check out reviews online or that video I linked. The whole system is a nightmare without help.

This isn't always accurate. I called at 12:30pm yesterday and waited 2 hours before getting disconnected. The whole system is just overloaded and they don't have enough staff. It's a complete dumpster fire πŸ”₯

Weird, I was told completely different times by an agent last week. She said early morning right when they open is best because they're fresh and not backed up yet. Different agents giving different advice lol... classic ny unemployment chaos

β€’

makes sense tho... the system is so backed up they probably don't even know what's going on themselves half the time

I've had better luck in early mornings too. Called at 8:05am and only waited 25 mins.

I think the trick is to just keep calling and eventually you'll get through. I've been dealing with ny unemployment for 5 months now (thanks to identity verification issues) and have gotten through at all different times. It's just random tbh. Sometimes 10am works, sometimes 2pm works. It's like playing the lottery.

β€’

5 months?! I would have lost my mind. How are you even surviving??

Sean Murphy

β€’

barely surviving tbh. maxed out credit cards and borrowed from family. the system is completely broken.

Here's what I've learned after 18 months of dealing with NY's unemployment system: The phone system is deliberately designed to make it hard to get through. It's not a bug, it's a feature. They're understaffed and overwhelmed, so they make it almost impossible to reach a human. Your best options are: 1. Try the OP's suggested times. These seem to change regularly but mid-day often works better. 2. Use a service like claimyr.com that will wait on hold for you. They've saved me countless hours and when I had my benefits suddenly stop in August, they got me connected to an agent who fixed it in one call. 3. Try the callback feature if available, but know it's very hit or miss. 4. Contact your state representative's office. They often have direct lines to unemployment staff. 5. Be persistent but polite when you do get through. These agents deal with angry people all day. The system is frustrating by design. They hope you'll give up. Don't.

THIS!!! πŸ‘† Especially the part about claimyr. That service saved my sanity.

Contacting my assemblyman was what finally worked for me. His office had my claim fixed in 3 days after I spent 2 months trying on my own.

The system is frustrating by" design - truer words have never been spokenπŸ’―

β€’

those times make sense. agents probably trying to get their lunch break in before the afternoon rush and then clearing out their queue before end of day

You know what's wild? Every state's unemployment system seems to be equally terrible. My cousin in California said it's just as bad there. What is it about unemployment offices that makes them so dysfunctional? Is it deliberate underfunding?

0 coins

Andre Dubois

β€’

100% deliberate underfunding. The harder it is to claim benefits, the fewer people who successfully get them. It saves the state money.

0 coins

Sean Murphy

β€’

its all of the above. old tech, understaffed, underfunded, and designed to make you give up. the whole system needs to be rebuilt from scratch

I've been suspended from my benefits since January because someone filed a fraudulant claim using my info. Even with calling during these supposed "best times" I can never get through. The few times I did, they just tell me to wait for the fraud department to review my docs and there's nothing they can do. 6 MONTHS AND STILL WAITING. I'm about to be evicted. 😑

Yuki Sato

β€’

You need to contact your state assembly member ASAP. They can escalate fraud cases way faster than regular channels. Also try claimyr.com to reach a specialist who might be able to help more than the general agents.

Thank you! I'll try contacting my assembly member tomorrow. Never thought of that. Desperate at this point.

I've had better luck getting through on Thursdays for some reason. Maybe they have more staff those days? Anybody else notice certain days being better?

tuesday mornings seem better to me. mondays are definitely the WORST

0 coins

avoid calling on mondays like the plague. everyone who couldnt get through friday is calling monday.

β€’

Just to add my experience - I've called at 11:30am twice in the last month and got through both times within 30-40 mins. So there might be something to this timing tip!

0 coins

Try calling their TTY line if you have access to that system. wait times are WAY shorter (like 10-15 mins vs 2+ hours

0 coins

Aisha Rahman

β€’

Isn't that line specifically for deaf/hard of hearing people? feels wrong to use it if you don't need that service...

0 coins

fair point. i only mentioned it because an agent actually suggested it to me when i told her how long i'd been waiting. but yeah probably best to leave it for people who truly need it

β€’

protip: when the automated system asks why youre calling, say "payment not received" instead of "question about claim" - routes you to payment specialists who can usually help with almost anything and the queue moves faster

Been unemployed for 6 weeks. Finally got through to someone at ny unemployment today after trying EVERY DAY. And guess what? They told me my claim was processed wrong from the beginning and I have to start all over. I literally broke down crying on the phone. This system is cruel.

0 coins

Zara Khan

β€’

So sorry to hear that. Try using claimyr.com if you need to call back again. At least you won't waste hours on hold.

0 coins

Carmen Flores

β€’

I feel your pain. Had the same thing happen to me. Started crying on the phone too. The agent actually was super nice about it though and helped me resubmit everything.

0 coins

Anybody know if these times apply to the specialized departments too? Like the ones that handle appeals or overpayment issues? I've been trying to reach that department for weeks.

0 coins

Yuki Sato

β€’

Appeals dept is a totally different animal. I had to call the main line, get transferred to a supervisor, then have THEM transfer me to appeals. Took 3 separate calls to finally make it happen. The direct numbers they give out never work.

Amara Nwosu

β€’

dont even bother with calling tbh. go to your state senator or assembly member's office. I wasted 2 months calling every day, then my senator's office fixed my issue in 4 days

AstroExplorer

β€’

maybe a stupid question but does anyone know if they're open on Saturdays? their website is so confusing and i work during the week so its hard for me to call during these suggested hours

0 coins

Sean Murphy

β€’

they used to be open saturdays during covid peak but not anymore. strictly mon-fri 8am-6pm now

0 coins

Zara Khan

β€’

That's why I ended up using claimyr.com - couldn't spend hours on hold during work hours. They just called for me and alerted me when someone picked up. Saved me from having to choose between work and getting my benefits fixed.

Thanks for sharing this! I've been stuck in unemployment hell for 2 months now - my claim got flagged for "additional review" and every time I call I either can't get through or get disconnected after hours of waiting. Going to try calling tomorrow at 12pm and see if this timing actually works. At this point I'm willing to try anything. The stress of not knowing when (or if) I'll get my benefits is eating me alive. Really appreciate you taking the time to share what that agent told you!

0 coins

Hope it works out for you! That "additional review" limbo is the worst - I was stuck there for 3 weeks before I finally got through. When you do call, make sure to have all your documents ready because they might ask for specific info right away. Also try the "payment not received" option someone mentioned earlier - it really does seem to get you through faster. Fingers crossed you get some answers tomorrow! 🀞

0 coins

This is super helpful info! I've been trying to get through for over a month about a certification issue that's holding up my payments. The timing makes total sense - I always assumed calling right when they opened would be best, but I never thought about them having meetings and training in the mornings. Definitely going to try that 11:45am-1:30pm window tomorrow. It's so frustrating that we have to play these games just to reach someone about our own benefits, but I really appreciate you sharing what that agent told you. Hopefully this helps more people get the assistance they desperately need!

0 coins

I totally feel you on the frustration of having to "play games" just to access our own benefits! It's wild that we need insider tips like this just to reach a human being. I'm new to dealing with NY unemployment but already dreading the phone calls after reading everyone's experiences here. Really glad OP shared this info though - going to bookmark those time windows for when I inevitably need to call. Hope your certification issue gets resolved quickly tomorrow! 🀞
