Finally got through on NY unemployment after 2 weeks of calling nonstop
After what seemed like a lifetime of busy signals and dropped calls, I finally managed to complete my unemployment claim today! Started hitting redial at exactly 8am sharp this morning and somehow got through after about 30 attempts. Been trying for nearly two weeks straight - calling at different times, using different phones, everything. For anyone still struggling, early morning definitely worked best for me. Had to wait on hold for almost an hour but the agent who finally helped me was actually really nice and got everything sorted in about 20 minutes. So releived to finally have this done. Thanks to everyone in this group who shared advice - your tips about calling right at opening time made all the difference!

Congrats! I know that feeling of sweet sweet relief. I was in the same boat last month - took me 3 weeks of constant calling to get through. Almost gave up completely.

β’It's crazy how something as simple as filing a claim has become this epic battle. Literally felt like winning the lottery when someone finally answered!

β’Don't give up! It sucks but persistence is key. Try the 8am trick like OP!

I gave up on the phones after spending hours getting nowhere. Found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that calls for you and connects you when a real person answers. Talking to an agent got my payments released in literally one day after weeks of pending status. Best decision ever, especially after wasting so much time trying to call myself. Here's a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

β’Yeah I was skeptical too but I was desperate after 3 weeks of calling. It actually worked tho - they called me when they had an agent on the line. Saved me from more hours of hold music hell.

β’sounds like an ad. does this actually work for ny unemployment specifically? their system is uniquely terrible

Henrietta Beasley
β’Yep specifically for NY. I was stuck in the pending payments loop for almost a month. After the callback I got my money in 2 days.

β’The difference is it actually got me through to someone lol. I was ready to give up until I tried it. Not saying it's magic but saved me weeks of frustration

8am is the KEY!!! I've been telling everyone this for months. The system gets so jammed by 8:30 that it's almost impossible to get through after that. Glad it worked for you too!

Why is it so hard to just file for unemployment in this state?? The website is from like 2003, the phone lines are always busy, and even when you finally get everything submitted they make you wait weeks for payments. The whole system is broken beyond belief.

β’becuz they WANT it to be difficult. makes fewer people collect benefits = more $ they save. its deliberate π―

β’Their systems just aren't built to handle the volume. Remember during covid when literally nobody could get through? It was a nightmare

β’Oh god dont remind me of the covid unemployment chaos. Was on PEN AND PAPER at one point filling out forms to mail in!!

Here's what actually works for getting through to NY unemployment (I was a call center supervisor for a different state agency so I know the systems): First, never call on Mondays or Fridays - these are the highest volume days and your chances drop by about 50%. Second, call exactly at opening (8am) OR try between 1:30-2:15pm when many agents return from lunch. This creates a brief window where wait times decrease. Third, if you get a recording saying they're experiencing high call volume, hang up immediately and redial. Don't wait for the system to disconnect you - this wastes precious minutes. Fourth, if you've been trying for weeks with no luck, use claimyr.com - it's a service that handles the calling/waiting for you and only connects you when there's an actual person on the line. It's what finally worked for me after three weeks of failed attempts. Fifth, make sure your claim info is organized before you call - have your employer details, dates, and ID ready to go. The less time agents spend looking up your info, the more likely they can solve your problem in one call. Good luck everyone! The system is frustrating but not impossible.

Am I the only one who thinks its insane that in 2023 we still have to CALL to resolve issues? Why cant they just have a functional website or app that actually works????

β’THIS!! My banking app lets me do literally everything online but unemployment is stuck in 1995

Mila Walker
β’Probably because the people running it are stuck in 1995 too π€£

β’Exactly! And they wonder why the system gets overwhelmed. If they just invested in decent tech this wouldn't be an issue.

I just filed my claim last week and now I'm terrified after reading all these posts about how hard it is to get through. Is there anything I should be doing proactively to avoid problems??

β’Make sure EVERYTHING in your application is 100% accurate. Any small discrepancy and you'll end up in callback hell

β’Double check your employer info especially. That's what got me stuck in pending for weeks.

What number did you call? I've been using 888-209-8124 but maybe there's a better one?

β’That's the right number. Just gotta keep trying over and over, especially right at 8am.

I swear ny unemployment is designed to make people give up. Been trying to verify my identity for WEEKS and just getting automated messages saying to wait for a callback that never comes π€¬

Pro tip: try calling from a different phone number if possible. I swear they blacklist numbers that call too frequently. Used my wife's phone after trying from mine for 2 weeks and got through first try!

Has anyone else noticed the unemployment website is down like EVERY weekend for "scheduled maintenance"? Convenient timing when most people would have time to file...

Natalie Wang
β’Yup! Always seems to be down exactly when I have time to deal with it π

Does anyone know if you get backpay for all the weeks you've been trying to file? Been unable to certify for almost a month now cuz the system keeps crashing
0 coins
Samantha Hall
β’Yes you should get backpay for any weeks you couldn't certify due to technical issues. Make sure to explain that to the agent when you finally get through.
0 coins
Ryan Young
β’In theory yes, in practice sometimes they give you a hard time about it. Document EVERYTHING - dates/times you tried to certify, screenshots of errors, etc.

Noah Torres
β’thx for the info! been taking screenshots of all the errors so hopefully that helps

Y'all I literally wrote a script that auto-dials them every 30 seconds and I STILL couldn't get through for 3 weeks. This system is beyond broken.

Katherine Harris
β’What did u use to write the script? That's genius even if it didn't work

Sophia Clark
β’Just used Python with some simple automation. Happy to share the code but honestly it didn't help much. They've got some serious call filtering going on.

Anyone else notice that if you select Spanish in the phone menu you get through faster? Used to work for me a couple months ago (i don't actually speak spanish tho so idk if it still works
0 coins
Justin Evans
β’This is actually a known hack but kinda messed up to use it if you don't speak Spanish. Takes resources away from Spanish speakers who already have fewer options.

My claim got approved but payments are still showing as pending after 3 weeks... do I need to call about this or will it resolve itself? Anyone else deal with this?

I've called 173 times today. ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY THREE. Not exaggerating, I've been keeping count. Not a single time got past the "we're experiencing high call volume" message. How is this acceptable in 2023???

Quick question - does anyone know if unemployment benefits count as income for Medicaid eligibility in NY? Getting so much conflicting info online.

Aaliyah Reed
β’Yes they do count as income for Medicaid. Make sure you report it or you could have issues later.
