How to fix outstanding claim issues on unemployment - NYS Department of Labor account showing problems

My unemployment claim has been showing outstanding issues for almost 2 weeks now and I can't figure out what's wrong. When I log into my NYS Department of Labor account it just says there are outstanding claim issues that need to be resolved but doesn't tell me what they are or how to fix them. I've been certifying my weekly claims but no payments are coming through. Has anyone dealt with this before? I'm getting really stressed because my rent is due next week and I don't know what these issues are or how long it takes to resolve them.

Outstanding claim issues usually mean there's something in your application or weekly certifications that triggered a review. Common causes include: inconsistent work history information, issues with your reason for separation from your last job, or problems with your availability for work. You should be able to see more details in the 'Correspondence' section of your my.ny.gov account - check there for any messages from NYS Department of Labor that explain what documentation they need.

I checked correspondence but there's nothing there! That's what's so frustrating. The system just says outstanding issues but gives me no way to find out what they are.

This happened to me last month. Turns out I had put the wrong end date for one of my previous jobs and it flagged my claim for manual review. The problem is the system doesn't always tell you what the specific issue is. You really need to call them to find out what documentation they want, but getting through is nearly impossible with their phone system.

How did you finally get through to them? I've been trying to call for days and either get disconnected or the system says they're too busy to take calls.

I actually used a service called Claimyr that helped me get through to a real person at NYS Department of Labor. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Basically they handle the calling and waiting for you, then connect you when an agent is available. It saved me hours of frustration trying to get through myself.

SAME THING HAPPENING TO ME!! This is so messed up, they expect us to be mind readers or something. How are we supposed to fix issues if they won't tell us what the issues are?? The whole NYS Department of Labor system is broken and they don't care that people are going without money while they take their sweet time.

I feel your frustration but getting angry won't help solve the problem. Focus on gathering any employment documents you have - pay stubs, separation notices, anything that might help clarify your work history.

Outstanding issues can also be triggered if you reported earnings during a week but the amount seems inconsistent with your reported work hours, or if there's a discrepancy in your job search activities. Make sure when you're doing your weekly certification that all your information matches exactly what you reported in your initial application. Even small differences can trigger a manual review.

That might be it actually. I did some freelance work a couple weeks ago and maybe I reported the hours wrong. Should I try to correct it somehow or wait for them to contact me?

Don't try to correct it through the online system - that could create more confusion. When you do get through to speak with someone, explain the freelance work situation clearly and have documentation ready showing exactly what you earned and when.

oh man this brings back bad memories from when my claim got flagged last year... took like 6 weeks to sort out and by the time they fixed it I was behind on everything

Thanks for mentioning Claimyr @profile2, I just watched their demo video and it looks legit. Definitely going to try that tomorrow because I can't keep spending my whole day trying to get through to NYS Department of Labor on my own.

I went through this exact same situation about 3 months ago. The "outstanding issues" message is so vague and unhelpful. In my case, it turned out to be a simple verification issue - they needed me to confirm my identity with additional documents. What finally worked for me was sending a secure message through the my.ny.gov portal asking specifically what documentation was needed to resolve the outstanding issues. It took about 5 business days to get a response, but at least I got a clear answer about what they wanted. Also try checking if there's a "Required Actions" or "To Do" section in your account that might have more specific information. The waiting is definitely stressful when bills are due, but hang in there!
