NYS Department of Labor unemployment claim showing pending issues - what does this mean?

My unemployment claim has been stuck on 'pending issues' for almost two weeks now and I'm starting to panic. I filed my initial claim three weeks ago and everything seemed fine until last week when the status changed. My weekly certifications are going through but no payments are being released. The my.ny.gov portal doesn't give any details about what the actual issue is. Has anyone else dealt with pending issues on their NYS Department of Labor claim? How long does this usually take to resolve?

Pending issues usually means there's something in your claim that needs manual review by an adjudicator. Common reasons include job separation details, availability questions, or wage verification problems. The NYS Department of Labor has to investigate before they can approve payments. Unfortunately, adjudication can take 4-6 weeks depending on their workload.

4-6 weeks?? I can't wait that long for payments. Is there any way to speed this up or find out what specific issue they're reviewing?

That's reassuring! Did you ever find out what the issue was or did it just resolve on its own?

never found out, just got a letter saying my claim was approved and all the money showed up in my account

You need to keep filing your weekly claims even while it's pending or you'll lose those weeks. The pending status just means they're reviewing something before releasing payments. Could be anything from verifying your last employer info to checking if you're actively looking for work. I had this happen when I forgot to report some part-time work from months earlier.

This is so frustrating! The NYS Department of Labor makes it impossible to get through to anyone on the phone to ask what's wrong. I've been calling for days and either get disconnected or the line is busy.

I had the same phone problems until someone told me about claimyr.com - it's a service that calls the NYS Department of Labor for you and gets you connected to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. I was skeptical but it actually got me through to someone who explained my pending issue in 10 minutes.

PENDING ISSUES IS THE WORST PART OF THIS WHOLE SYSTEM!!! They just leave you hanging with no information while your bills pile up. I've been waiting 5 weeks now and still nothing. The NYS Department of Labor needs to fix their communication because this is ridiculous.

I feel your pain! Have you tried reaching out to your local assembly member's office? Sometimes they can help push things along with state agencies.

Keep checking your account daily because sometimes the status changes without any notification. Also make sure you didn't miss any requests for additional documentation in your messages.

I'm going through the exact same thing right now - filed 3 weeks ago and been stuck on pending issues for the past 10 days. It's so stressful not knowing what the problem is or how long it will take. I've been keeping up with my weekly certifications like everyone suggests, but the waiting is killing me. Has anyone had luck getting information through the online messaging system on my.ny.gov? I've sent two messages but haven't heard back yet.

I'm in a similar boat - filed about the same time as you and hitting the same wall with the messaging system. From what I've read here, it seems like the online messages get pretty delayed responses if any at all. @CosmicCrusader mentioned that claimyr service for getting through by phone - might be worth looking into since calling directly seems impossible. It's rough not knowing if it's going to be resolved in days or weeks while expenses keep piling up. At least we're not alone in this frustrating process!

I went through this exact situation about 6 months ago and it's absolutely nerve-wracking! My claim was pending for almost 4 weeks before it got resolved. What helped me was documenting everything - I kept screenshots of my claim status, saved copies of all my weekly certifications, and wrote down every phone call attempt with timestamps. When I finally got through to someone (took about 50+ call attempts over several days), they were able to see that my former employer had disputed something about my separation reason. Once that got cleared up, all my back payments came through within a few days. The key is to stay persistent with the phone calls and keep filing your weekly claims no matter what. I know it's easier said than done when you're stressed about bills, but hang in there - it will get resolved eventually.
