How to fix pending issues on NYS Department of Labor unemployment claim
My unemployment claim has been stuck with pending issues for over two weeks now and I'm starting to panic about my bills. When I log into my.ny.gov it just shows 'pending adjudication' but doesn't tell me what the actual problem is. I've tried calling the NYS Department of Labor customer service line but can never get through - either busy signal or I get disconnected after waiting an hour. Has anyone dealt with this before? What steps did you take to resolve pending issues and get your payments released?

Pending issues usually mean there's something the NYS Department of Labor needs to verify about your claim. Common reasons include employment separation details, wage discrepancies, or identity verification. Check your online account for any messages or documents they might have requested. Sometimes the issue isn't obvious in the main dashboard but shows up in the messages section.

•I checked messages but there's nothing there. My employer laid me off due to downsizing so I don't think it's a separation issue. Could it be a wage verification problem?

I had the same thing happen last month - stuck in pending for 3 weeks. Turns out they were waiting for my employer to respond to their inquiry about my separation. You might want to contact your former employer's HR department to see if NYS Department of Labor has reached out to them. Sometimes employers don't respond quickly which delays everything.

•That's a good point. I'll reach out to my old HR department tomorrow and see if they got anything from NYS Department of Labor.

ugh this is so frustrating!! why can't they just tell us what the problem is instead of making us guess?? I've been pending for a month and still no answers from anyone at NYS Department of Labor

•I know it's frustrating but the adjudication process exists to prevent fraud. They have to verify information carefully before releasing payments.

If you can't get through by phone, I found a service called Claimyr that actually got me connected to a real NYS Department of Labor agent when I was having similar pending issues. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Basically they handle the calling and waiting for you then patch you through when an agent picks up. Saved me hours of frustration.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm already strapped for cash with my claim being delayed.

•It was worth it for me to finally get answers about my pending status. Much better than spending days trying to call myself and never getting through.

Keep filing your weekly claims even while it's pending! That's important - if you stop filing they might close your claim entirely.

I went through something similar last year and found a few things that helped move things along. First, try logging in early morning (like 6-7 AM) - that's when the system is least busy and sometimes you can spot new messages or updates they've added overnight. Also, if you have any paperwork from your layoff (termination letter, final pay stub, etc.), make sure you have digital copies ready - they might request these through the online portal even if they haven't asked yet. The waiting is brutal but hang in there. Most pending issues do get resolved, it just takes longer than it should unfortunately.

•@Benjamin Johnson that s'really helpful advice about checking early morning! I never thought about the timing making a difference. Do you remember how long your pending issue took to resolve once they finally started processing it? I m'trying to get a sense of realistic timelines here.

I'm dealing with a similar situation right now - been pending for about 10 days. One thing I discovered is that you can sometimes get more specific information by calling the Technical Support line instead of the main customer service number. The tech support folks can sometimes see system notes that aren't visible in your online account. The number is 1-888-209-8124. Also, if you have a local career center, try calling them directly - they often have better connections to the department and can sometimes make inquiries on your behalf. It's frustrating but don't give up! Keep documenting everything and continue filing your weekly certifications.

•@Omar Farouk This is super helpful! I had no idea there was a separate technical support line - I ve'only been trying the main customer service number. I m'definitely going to try calling 1-888-209-8124 tomorrow morning. The local career center idea is brilliant too. I think there s'one about 20 minutes from me so I ll'see if they can help advocate on my behalf. Really appreciate you sharing these specific resources instead of just the generic keep "calling advice." It gives me some actual actionable steps to try!

I've been through this exact situation twice with NYS Department of Labor - once in 2022 and again last fall. Both times it felt like being stuck in limbo with no information. What finally worked for me was creating a timeline document with all my claim details, dates, and any communication attempts. Then I used that when I finally got through to an agent. Also, try calling right when they open at 8 AM on weekdays - I had better luck getting through then. In the meantime, screenshot everything in your account daily so you have a record if something changes or gets updated. The waiting is awful but most claims do eventually get resolved. Keep filing those weekly certifications no matter what - that's crucial to maintaining your claim status.

•@GalacticGuru The timeline document idea is genius! I never thought about keeping a detailed record like that but it makes so much sense - having all the dates and details organized would definitely help when you finally get to talk to someone. I'm going to start doing that right now with everything that's happened so far. The screenshot tip is really smart too because I've heard horror stories about people's claim information just disappearing from the system. Thanks for sharing what actually worked for you instead of just generic advice. It's reassuring to hear from someone who's been through this multiple times and came out the other side!

Have you tried reaching out to your state assembly member or senator's office? I know it sounds like overkill, but when I was stuck in pending status for over a month, my friend suggested contacting my local representative. Their constituent services office was able to make an inquiry with NYS Department of Labor on my behalf and I got a call back within 3 days with an update on my case. They can't speed up the process but they can often get you actual information about what's holding things up. You can find your representatives at nysenate.gov and assembly.state.ny.us by entering your zip code. Worth a shot when you've exhausted the normal channels!

•@Sofia Perez Wow, I never would have thought to contact my state representatives about an unemployment issue! That s'actually brilliant - I always forget that constituent services are there to help with exactly these kinds of bureaucratic problems. Three days for a response is incredible compared to the weeks I ve'been waiting. I m'definitely going to look up my assembly member and senator today. Even if they can t'speed things up, just getting actual information about what s'causing the delay would be such a relief. Thanks for sharing this - it s'one of those why "didn t'I think of that solutions" that could really make a difference!

I'm going through the exact same thing right now - pending for 3 weeks with no explanation! Reading through these responses has been incredibly helpful. I'm definitely going to try the early morning login suggestion and calling that technical support number tomorrow. The idea about contacting state representatives is something I never considered but makes total sense. For what it's worth, I also found that documenting every phone call attempt (time, how long I waited, what happened) has been useful for my own sanity if nothing else. The whole system really needs to be more transparent about what these "pending issues" actually are. Fingers crossed we all get resolution soon - this financial stress is no joke!

•@Connor Rupert I m'in the same boat as you and the original poster - this thread has been a goldmine of actually useful advice! I ve'been documenting everything too and it does help with the stress a bit to feel like you re'doing something productive. I m'planning to try that technical support number first thing tomorrow and also look up my local representatives. The fact that so many people are dealing with this exact same issue really shows how broken the communication aspect of this system is. At least we know we re'not alone in this frustrating process. Hoping we all get some answers soon - the bills don t'stop coming while we wait for the state to figure things out!

I'm in a similar situation - pending for about 2 weeks now and it's really stressful not knowing what's going on. This thread has been incredibly helpful though! I had no idea there was a separate technical support line or that contacting state representatives was even an option. I've been calling the main customer service number during lunch breaks and never getting through. Going to try calling that tech support number (1-888-209-8124) first thing tomorrow morning and also look up my local assembly member. The timeline documentation idea is really smart too - I'm going to start keeping detailed records of everything. Thanks to everyone for sharing actual actionable advice instead of just "keep trying to call." It's reassuring to know I'm not the only one dealing with this mess, even though I wouldn't wish this stress on anyone!

•@Noah Ali I m'so glad this thread is helping you too! I ve'been lurking here for a while but finally decided to jump in because I m'dealing with the same nightmare. Been pending for almost 3 weeks now and the stress is killing me. I tried calling that technical support number this morning that @Omar Farouk mentioned and actually got through after about 45 minutes on hold! The agent couldn t resolve'my issue but at least confirmed that my claim is being reviewed for employment verification "which is" more information than I ve gotten'in weeks. She said to expect 2-3 more weeks for resolution but at least now I know what s happening.'Definitely recommend trying that tech line early in the morning - seems to have better luck than the main customer service number. Also going to contact my assembly member today like @Sofia Perez suggested. Hang in there everyone, we ll get through'this!
