Filed NY unemployment in May, 5 months with no response despite sending all documents

I submitted my unemployment claim back in May after losing my job. It's now October and I haven't received any updates on my application status. I've sent in every document they asked for, followed up multiple times, and even reached out to my local representative for help. Nothing has worked. I was forced to withdraw money from my retirement savings just to survive, which I'm absolutely regretting now since it came with heavy penalties. Haven't received a single call, email, or letter from unemployment. With benefits getting ready to expire soon, I'm completely out of options. Does anyone know what else I can try at this point? And if they finally approve my claim in the next few weeks, will I still get the extra $360 weekly supplement that I should have been receiving this whole time?

The same thing happened to me! I filed in April and didnt get a response until September. Keep calling them every day. I mean EVERY day. Sometimes 5-6 times until someone actually helps you. Its ridiculous that we have to do this but its the only thing that worked for me.

I've tried calling so many times but can never get through. It's either busy signals or I get disconnected after waiting for hours. Did you have a specific time that worked better for getting through?

I found that calling right when they open at 8am works best. But honestly I used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that held my place in line and called me when an agent was available. Saved me hours of frustration.

I'll check that out, thanks. At this point I'd try anything to get this resolved.

Wait is that service legit? sounds too good to be true tbh

It actually worked for me! And I've never been able to get through before. They just hold your spot in line and call you when someone picks up. Worth every penny considering I was missing out on thousands in benefits.

After spending weeks trying to get through to ny unemployment on my own, I tried a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and they got me through to an agent in about 2 hours. It was the best money I've ever spent because I finally got my claim sorted out and received all my backpay within 2 weeks. They have a video explaining how it works here: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE - definitely worth checking out if you're desperate like I was.

so is this like an app that calls for you? i dont get it

Yeah basically they call the unemployment office for you and wait on hold. When a real human finally answers, they connect the call to your phone. Saved me from hours of listening to that awful hold music lol

this sounds like some kinda scam. you really trust some random service with your unemployment info?

•

They don't need any personal info about your claim. They just make the call and connect you when someone answers. You handle everything else yourself directly with the agent. I was skeptical too but it actually worked perfectly.

I used it twice and finally got my benefits. The unemployment system is the real scam 🤡

File a complaint with your state rep and senator. That's what finally got mine moving after 4 months of nothing. Suddenly they "found" my paperwork and processed everything within a week. Don't just rely on your councilman, go higher up!

As for your question about the $360 supplement - YES you will get all back pay you're entitled to once approved. Make sure to claim for every week you were eligible even while waiting for approval. I got a lump sum of over $11,000 when mine finally went through after sitting for 6 months.

That's a relief to hear. I've been certifying every week without fail, but wasn't sure if I'd still get the supplement since it's about to expire.

Just make sure all your certifications are done properly. Sometimes they only backpay for correctly certified weeks. I missed two weeks of certification and they refused to pay me for those weeks even though I was eligible.

NY unemployment is complete trash rn. I've been in the same situation since June. Called over 200 times (not exaggerating). Email them every week. Nothing helps. The entire system is broken and nobody seems to care that people are literally losing everything while waiting.

Preach 🙌 The system is designed to wear us down so we just give up. Don't let them win.

Here's what worked for me with NY unemployment after 3 months of waiting: 1. Call exactly at 7:58am (they open at 8). Their phone system starts accepting calls slightly before official opening. 2. If that doesn't work, try using Claimyr.com - it's a service that waits on hold for you and calls when an agent is available. Talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast. 3. Contact EVERY possible representative - state assembly, senator, governor's office, department of labor ombudsman. One of them will eventually help. 4. Keep documenting EVERYTHING. Every call, every letter, every email. You'll need this if you have to escalate. 5. Look for unemployment clinics or free legal aid in your area. Some nonprofits specialize in helping people navigate the system. Don't give up! It's designed to be frustrating, but persistence pays off. And yes, you WILL get all backpay including the $360 supplement for every eligible week once approved. Good luck! Let us know how it goes.

This is so helpful. When you contacted your representatives, did you call or email them? And how long did it take for them to respond?

I did both! I called AND emailed. My assembly person responded in 2 days, senator's office took about a week. The key is telling them you're facing eviction or utilities shutoff (if true) - that gets flagged as urgent.

Thank you for such detailed advice. I'm going to try the early morning call trick tomorrow and reach out to more officials. Really appreciate this!

have u checked ur online account? sometimes they dont call or email but theres messages in the system. i thought i wasnt approved but actually they needed additional docs and never told me. the message was just sitting in my account for weeks.

0 coins

I check it every day like I'm checking a social media account lol. Nothing new ever appears. Just says "pending" with no additional info.

oof that sucks. make sure ur looking under the 'messages' tab not just the main dashboard. they hide important stuff there sometimes

I know this sounds weird but try faxing them. I was stuck for 3 months with no response, sent a fax with my info and a brief explanation, and got a call back 2 days later. The old systems still work sometimes when the new ones are overwhelmed.

Withdrawing from your 401k was a tough move 😬 I get it tho, gotta survive. Just be prepared for the tax hit next year. I did the same thing and ended up owing way more than I expected.

0 coins

Yeah I'm already dreading tax time. Had no choice though - it was either that or be homeless. Just hoping I get this unemployment sorted before things get even worse.

Whatever you do, DON'T STOP CERTIFYING EACH WEEK even though you're not getting paid. If you miss weeks of certification, they might deny those weeks when you finally get approved.

0 coins

I've been religious about certifying every Sunday without fail. It's literally the only thing I can control in this whole mess.

Sienna Gomez

Smart! That'll make sure you get everything you're owed when they finally get their act together.

anybody have the direct number for a supervisor at NY unemployment? the regular line is useless and i need to speak to someone with actual authority

Abigail bergen

•

There is no direct line for supervisors. They keep those numbers locked down tighter than Fort Knox 🙄

Use claimyr.com to get through to an agent first, then immediately ask for a supervisor. That's your best bet to escalate things.

I think there's a massive backlog issue happening. My neighbor works for the DOL and says they're still catching up on claims from months ago. The system wasn't designed to handle this many applications at once.

Just wanna say hang in there. I was in your exact situation for 7 MONTHS. Then suddenly one day everything was approved and I got all my backpay at once. It's like they completely forgot about me and then remembered.

0 coins

That gives me some hope. Did you do anything special that finally got their attention?

0 coins

Tyrone Hill

•

I think what finally worked was bombarding them from multiple angles at once - calls, emails, state rep, and an official complaint through the DOL website. No idea which one did the trick, but something finally broke through.

Before you drain more of your retirement savings try calling using claimyr.com - it was the only way I could talk to a live agent. You shouldn't have to keep dipping into your future just because the system is broken!

Not to sound cynical but i tried EVERYTHING and nothing worked until I used this. Sitting on hold for 6+ hours a day wasn't an option for me.

check ur spam folder. deadass they sent all my important emails there and i almost missed the deadline to submit docs.

In case nobody mentioned it yet, there's a separate email specifically for backlogged claims: backlog@labor.ny.gov - it's not advertised but sometimes gets faster responses than the main channels.

0 coins

Is this email still active? I tried it last month and my message bounced back.

Oh dang, maybe they shut it down. Try unemploymentassistance@labor.ny.gov instead. That one worked for my cousin recently.
