Almost 2 months and no payment from NY unemployment after being let go

Got let go from my job due to downsizing back on August 23, 2022. Filed my unemployment claim online right away on August 26. It's now October 30 and still haven't received a single payment - not even backdated money. I've been faithfully certifying every week on Sundays as required. I did get an official letter about 3 weeks after applying saying I'd be receiving $554 weekly. My family is struggling bad with only my spouse's income coming in and bills piling up. Credit card is maxed out and rent is coming due again. Anyone else dealing with this kind of delay or know what I should do? The waiting is making me crazy.

Call them!! Try calling right when they open at 8am. I was in the same boat - waited 6 weeks with nothing, then finally got through to someone who fixed it in 5 minutes. Turns out there was some stupid flag on my account for "verification" that no one told me about.

I've been trying to call but it's IMPOSSIBLE to get thru! Been calling for weeks and either get a busy signal or the automated system just hangs up on me 😩

Yep I had the exact same thing. Apparently they were waiting for employer to verify something but nobody bothered to tell me. So frustrating.

Try calling at exactly 7:58am - that worked for me. Or try during lunch when others might not be calling as much.

After banging my head against the wall for weeks trying to get through to ny unemployment, I finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that called for me and connected me with an agent. Talking to an agent got my money released within 48 hrs after waiting over a month. It was the only way I could actually talk to a real person who could help. They also have this video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

sounds too good to be true... is this some kind of scam? 🤔

Not a scam at all - it's just a service that waits on hold for you. They call the unemployment office and when a real person answers, they connect you. Saved me HOURS of my life and my benefits started flowing right after.

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? i've tried everything to get through to these people

Worked for me! The agent I talked to fixed my issue in minutes - turns out I had answered one question wrong during certification that was holding everything up. Worth every penny to get $3k+ in backpay released.

hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different?

You don't have to believe me lol but after 5 weeks of nothing, I used it last Thursday, spoke to someone Friday morning, and had my money by Monday. They just stay on hold so you don't have to.

Check if your identity verification went through. Log into your account and see if there's a message asking you to verify anything. That held mine up for 7 weeks and I had no idea until I dug around in the messages section.

Thanks! Just checked and don't see anything about verification in my messages, just the standard confirmation that I filed a claim.

So sorry ur going through this. I had to wait 9 WEEKS for my first payment. the system is completely broken. I ended up having to contact my state assembly person who helped push it through. Try reaching out to your local rep - it actually helped me!

The EXACT same thing happened to me! They're so backlogged its ridiculous. When I finally got someone on the phone (took 4 hrs on hold) they said there was a "pending review" on my account that someone needed to clear manually. The rep cleared it while I was on the phone and I got paid 3 days later.

Did they explain why it was under review? Was there something wrong with your application?

Brielle Johnson

Nope! Just standard "quality control" they said. Apparently they randomly select claims to verify but don't tell anyone 🙄 Such a broken system

This happened to EVERYONE I KNOW who filed recently. The system is completely overloaded still. But here's what worked for me - go on Twitter and DM the NYSDOL account with your issue (don't include personal info). They actually responded and escalated my claim within 24 hrs.

I don't have Twitter but might make an account just for this. Did you need to provide any personal info in the DM?

No personal info in the DM - they responded asking me to email them from the email associated with my claim so they could verify my identity. Got a call back the next day!

Look I hate to say this but you HAVE to get a human on the phone to fix it. The website is useless for resolving issues. I spent 3 weeks trying to get through before I found claimyr.com - they got me through to a person who fixed everything in 10 minutes. Absolutely ridiculous that you need to jump through these hoops, but that's NY unemployment for ya 🤦‍♂️

another day, another company promising to fix the unfixable unemployment system lol

Trust me I was skeptical too lol. But after weeks of trying to call myself with no luck, I figured it was worth a shot. The agent I talked to said they're still massively understaffed and the phone system is intentionally limiting calls because they can't handle the volume.

Are you 10000% sure you're answering the weekly certification questions correctly? One wrong answer can hold up everything. Especially the questions about whether you were ready/willing/able to work and if you refused any work. Check your payment history screen too - sometimes it shows pending issues.

I think I've been answering everything right but maybe I messed something up? I always say yes to being ready/willing/able and no to refusing work. Payment history just shows all zeros.

Had the SAME issue last year. Here's what finally worked for me: 1) Call the main number but instead of waiting for the voice prompts, immediately press 9+1+1+1. This sometimes gets you to a different queue. 2) If that doesn't work, try claimyr.com - they call and wait on hold for you. When an agent answers, they connect you. Saved me hours of frustration and my backpay was released immediately after talking to someone. 3) Contact your state assembly person - they have special contacts at unemployment. 4) Check your spam folder daily - sometimes they send emails requiring action but they get filtered. The system is frustrating but once you get through to a human, they can usually fix it quickly. Good luck!

Thank you for such detailed advice! I'm going to try all of these methods. Never thought about checking spam - will do that now.

I can vouch for the assembly person route. My cousin works for a state rep and says they have direct lines to unemployment case managers that the public doesn't have access to.

just went thru this exact nightmare. turns out they needed some additional info from my employer that was holding everything up, but nobody bothered to tell me 🙄 literally took one 5-minute phone call to resolve once I actually got through to a person

I filed on 9/2/22, didn't get my first payment until 10/25/22. Almost 2 months of nothing! And guess what? They never told me why. When I finally got through after using claimyr.com (which btw was totally worth it), the agent just said "oh it's released now" with no explanation. The system is a joke.

so did you ever find out what was actually wrong with your claim? or they just magically fixed it?

Nope! Agent literally just said "there was a hold on your account that's been removed now" and wouldn't give details. Classic NY unemployment 🙃

this is why i hate NY unemployment so much. try emailing them too - sometimes they respond faster that way. use the contact form on the website and be super specific about your issue.

Check if your employer is contesting the claim! My boss tried to say I quit when I was actually laid off, and that held everything up for months until I proved otherwise.

-

Beatrice Marshall

Oh that's a good point. How would I find out if my employer is contesting it?

Noah huntAce420

You'd need to talk to an agent - they can see if your employer responded to their request for info. This happened to 2 people in my dept when we got laid off.

Faxing (yes, FAXING in 2022 🤡) a letter explaining your situation sometimes works. The fax number is on their website. Include your claim ID, last 4 of SSN, and detailed timeline. Sounds crazy but it worked for me when nothing else did.

Who even owns a fax machine anymore? 😂 You can use online fax services though.

I know right?? I used an online fax service. The govt is truly stuck in 1995 lmao

Have you checked your bank info is correct in the system? I had a friend who waited months only to find out they had transposed two digits in their account number.

Just double-checked and the account/routing numbers are correct. Good suggestion though!
