After verifying with ID.me, NY unemployment says email mismatch - now waiting 10 days?
I completed my ID.me verification about three days ago and submitted a new claim. After finishing, I got a message saying my claim wasn't properly completed and I needed to call the 209 number. When I finally got through yesterday, the representative told me there was some kind of email address mismatch in their system (which makes absolutely no sense since I've only ever used one email). The rep said they forwarded it to a supervisor for approval and told me to expect a return call that I shouldn't miss under any circumstances. I was anxious about missing this call, so I called back today to find out what time their phone lines close. That's when a different rep told me something completely different - said I won't get any callback at all and should just wait 10 days for an email confirming the change. Has anyone else dealt with this confusing situation? Do I actually need to wait for a call or just wait for an email? Getting different answers from different reps is driving me crazy.

Welcome to the absolute nightmare that is ny unemployment. There customer sevice is a joke. I actually had almost the exact same problem last month. Every person you talk to will tell you something different and none of them actually know whats going on. I ended up waiting 14 days with no email, then had to start the whole process over again. Good luck!

That's what I'm afraid of! Did you ever get it resolved or are you still dealing with it?

After weeks of getting nowhere with ny unemployment, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and it was a game changer. Instead of being on hold forever, they called and waited in the queue for me, then connected me with an actual agent when they picked up. Talking to a real person got my account fixed in one day after weeks of frustration. Here's a video that explains how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

This sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else actually tried this?

I was skeptical too but it actually works. Was desperate after trying for 3 weeks to get through. Had my issue fixed same day once I talked to someone.

sounds like another scam trying to take advantage of desperate people. why would i trust some random website with my unemployment stuff? 🙄

They don't need any of your personal info for unemployment - they just call and wait on hold, then connect you directly when an agent answers. You handle the actual conversation yourself.

Literally the only thing that worked for me after trying everything else. Talking to a human was all I needed to get my account fixed.

You're getting the standard run-around. Here's what's actually happening: your ID.me verification has a different email than what's in the unemployment system. Even though it doesn't make sense to you, their system is flagging it as a mismatch. The supervisor review is real, but there's no special callback. The 10-day wait is standard procedure for these email mismatch cases. I've been through this exact situation.

This makes so much sense! Did you end up getting your issue resolved after the 10 days, or did you have to take additional steps?

It took 12 days but yes, got an email saying it was fixed and could access my account again. Just make sure you check your spam folder too.

I swear the ny unemployment system is designed to be confusing on purpose so people give up. they told me 3 different things on 3 different calls last time i had a problem. dont trust anything they say unless you get it in writing.

The NYSDOL has major issues with their ID verification system right now. My coworker and I both got laid off last month, and we BOTH had the same email mismatch problem even though we've used the same emails for years. Here's what worked for me: 1. Don't wait for them to call you - they almost never do 2. Check both your main email AND spam folder daily 3. After exactly 7 business days (not calendar days), call back if you haven't received an email 4. Ask specifically for a "claim adjustment specialist" not just any rep 5. If they try to tell you to keep waiting, politely ask to speak with a supervisor The most important thing I learned is to be persistent but super polite. The system is broken, but the people working there are just doing their jobs. Eventually got mine fixed after about 2 weeks of back and forth.

This is incredibly helpful, thank you! I'll wait 7 business days and then try your approach. Did you have to verify your identity again?

Nope, didn't have to redo the ID verification thankfully. Just had to confirm some basic info when I finally got through to the right person.

My brother had this EXACT problem in February! The email mismatch is a known glitch in their system. DO NOT wait 10 days doing nothing. Call every single day (I know it sucks) but that's the only way to get it resolved. My brother waited the 10 days like they said and got NOTHING, had to start all over. When he called every day, suddenly it was "fixed" on day 3.

This!! The squeaky wheel gets the grease with unemployment for sure. I called 6 times in 2 days and magically my "processing delay" disappeared.

Try claimyr.com - my brother used it to get through after being hung up on like 20 times. They wait on hold for you and connect you when a real person answers.

The whole ID.me verification + NYSDOL integration is BROKEN. I work in IT and I can tell you this is happening because their systems don't talk to each other properly. The "email mismatch" is almost always because: 1) You might have used a slightly different format of your email (like with ID.me you used JohnDoe@gmail but with unemployment you used john.doe@gmail - even though these go to the same Gmail account, the system sees them as different) 2) There might be a capitalization difference (JohnDoe vs johndoe) 3) The ID.me verification data isn't properly syncing with the NYSDOL database The 10-day wait is their standard timeframe for manual verification. What's really happening is they're putting your case in a queue for a human to manually review and compare the accounts. I went through this last year and it took exactly 8 business days before I got the confirmation email. They're not going to call you.

This makes so much sense from a technical perspective! I think I did use my email with a period in it on one system and without in another. Thank you for explaining this - at least now I understand why it's happening.

I'm also in IT and can confirm this is accurate. The systems they're using were rushed into place during covid and have never been properly integrated. Classic government tech mess.

I'll tell u exactly what's gonna happen bcuz same thing happend to me. You'll wait 10 days, get no email, call back and they'll say "we don't see any notes about an email mismatch on your account" and you'll have to start over. I HIGHLY recommend using claimyr.com to get thru to a tier 2 agent who can actually fix it on the spot instead of the regular agents who just read scripts.

Just want to add my experience - had the same issue in April. Called 30+ times trying to get through. Finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to connect with an agent. Got a tier 2 specialist who fixed the email mismatch while I was on the phone. Was literally the best money I've spent all year considering I was about to miss rent without my benefits.

did you have to reverify your identity again or did they just fix the email issue?

They just fixed the email issue on their end. Took like 5 minutes once I got the right person. No reverification needed.

Unfortunately you've stumbled into one of the most common NY unemployment glitches right now. When ID.me and NYSDOL don't perfectly match your info, you get stuck in this loop. Here's what you absolutely need to do: 1) Document EVERYTHING. Write down the name of every rep you speak with, the date/time, and what they told you. 2) After 5 business days (not 10), call back and ask specifically for a "supervisor review status" 3) If they say there's no update, ask to speak to a Tier 2 specialist (use those exact words) 4) If they refuse, hang up and call again until you get someone helpful NYSDOL is overwhelmed and their systems are outdated. The reps are trained to get you off the phone with vague promises. Be polite but extremely persistent. I went through this in March and only got it resolved when I finally reached a Tier 2 agent who could actually see both systems and fix the mismatch. If all else fails, contact your state representative's office - they have special contacts at NYSDOL who can expedite cases. Also, check out claimyr.com - they can help you get through to a live agent faster. Best money I ever spent after weeks of frustration.

Thank you for this detailed strategy! I'll definitely start documenting everything and ask for a Tier 2 specialist. I never would have known to ask for that specifically.

This is spot on advice. The tier 2 specialists are the only ones who can actually fix things in real time.

Contacting your state rep works! I was stuck for a month, emailed my assemblyman, and got a call from a special NYSDOL team within 48 hours.

Trust me you dont wanna wait 10 business days. Thats what they told me and i waited and nothing happened. Use claimyr.com to get through to an actual person who can help - they call and stay on hold so you dont have to. when a real agent picks up they connect the call to your phone. got my issue fixed same day instead of waiting weeks.

Have you checked if your NY unemployment account is showing the correct email address? Log in and go to profile settings. If the email there doesn't match what you used for ID.me EXACTLY (including caps/lowercase), that's probably the issue. Try to update it yourself first before waiting for them.

That's the problem - I can't even log in because the ID verification issue is blocking access to my account. It's a total catch-22!

The unemployment system is so messed up right now. I had to call like 50 times before getting someone who actually knew what they were talking about. Don't believe the "wait 10 days" line - that's what they tell everyone to get them off the phone. Keep calling until you get someone competent who can actually help.
