Was a bit nervous or untrusting at first, but my calls went thru. First time the wait was a bit long but their customer chat line on their page was helpful and put me at ease that I would receive my call. Just wanted to add - make sure you apply as soon as possible after losing your job. There's no waiting period in NY, so you can file your claim right away. The sooner you file, the sooner your benefits can start. And don't worry about making mistakes on the application - you can always call to correct information later (though good luck getting through to them on the phone!).

wait so even the partial payments when you work part time count? i thought those might be different since you're still working
Yes, partial unemployment benefits are still unemployment compensation for tax purposes. It doesn't matter that you were working part-time - any UI benefits paid by NYS Department of Labor are taxable income that must be reported on your federal return.

They just handle getting you through to the agents, but having a real person explain the medical leave rules made all the difference. The agent walked me through exactly what documentation I needed and how to frame my situation on the application.
ugh the whole system is so frustrating when you're dealing with medical issues!! like you're already stressed about your health and then you have to jump through all these hoops just to survive financially. i hope you get approved OP because this situation is exactly what unemployment benefits should be for
totally agree. the system acts like everyone who loses their job is perfectly healthy and can immediately jump into any work. medical situations are way more common than they want to admit

Small businesses get hit the hardest by unemployment costs. We had to lay off 3 people during COVID and our unemployment insurance rates went through the roof. It's like being punished twice - first you lose revenue and have to cut staff, then you pay higher taxes for years because of those layoffs. The NYS Department of Labor doesn't care that you had no choice.
There are actually provisions for economic layoffs that don't impact your experience rating as much as firing for cause. You might want to check with your accountant about whether those layoffs were properly classified.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS BROKEN!!! I've been fighting with them for months over my anxiety disorder and they keep asking for more and more paperwork. Even with multiple doctors saying I can't work they still want to drag it out. Don't get your hopes up that this will be easy or quick.

just want to say i hope things get better for you. depression is so hard and it takes courage to recognize when you need help. the unemployment stuff will work out but focus on taking care of yourself first
