I went through something similar a few months ago! One thing that helped me was also trying to reach out through their online contact form on the DOL website - sometimes they respond faster to written requests than phone calls. Also, if you have any local workforce development offices in your area, they might be able to help escalate your case or provide guidance on getting through to the right department. Don't give up, you'll get through this!
I had this exact same issue last month! My Google Authenticator got out of sync after I got a new phone. What worked for me was going to my local CareerCenter (they're part of the workforce development system) - they have a direct line to DOL tech support that bypasses the regular phone queue. The staff there was super helpful and got me connected within like 20 minutes instead of the hours I was spending on hold. You can find your nearest location on the DOL website. They also helped me set up SMS backup so I won't get stuck like this again. Definitely worth a shot if calling directly isn't working!
This is such great advice! I had no idea that CareerCenters had direct lines to DOL tech support - that's a total game changer. I've been banging my head against the wall trying to get through the regular phone lines. Definitely going to look up my nearest location first thing tomorrow morning. Thanks for sharing this tip, you might have just saved me days of frustration!
I'm going through the exact same thing right now! Filed my claim about 3 weeks ago and got those same two letters - one with the weekly benefit amount and certification schedule. But radio silence since then on actual approval. Reading through all these comments is both reassuring and terrifying at the same time 😅 Sounds like 4-6 weeks is pretty normal which is brutal when you're just trying to pay rent. I've been certifying weekly like everyone says and checking my online account obsessively. Might have to look into that claimyr service if I don't hear anything by week 4. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences - at least I know I'm not alone in this nightmare!
I totally get the frustration! I'm also dealing with the weekly certification process and it definitely feels overwhelming at first. One thing that helped me was setting up a calendar reminder for the same day/time each week so it becomes routine. Also, the good news is that most weeks the questions are pretty much the same - did you work, are you able to work, are you looking for work, etc. Once you get the hang of it, it only takes a few minutes. Just don't let yourself get behind because catching up is way more stressful than staying current!
@Amina Diop that s'really good advice about setting up a calendar reminder! I never thought about making it a routine like that. The questions being the same each week is reassuring too - I was worried they would get more complicated over time. I m'definitely going to set up that reminder right now before I forget. Thanks for the tip about not getting behind, that s'exactly what I was worried about after reading @Isabella Brown s experience'with missing weeks.
Just wanted to add that you can actually certify for benefits online through the NY.gov website which makes it way more convenient than having to call in. I usually do mine on Sunday mornings while having coffee - takes maybe 3-5 minutes once you get used to it. The system will also send you email reminders if you sign up for notifications, which has saved me a couple times when I almost forgot. And yes, you do have to keep doing it every single week until you either get a job, your benefits run out, or your claim year expires. It's tedious but it's just part of the process unfortunately.
Good looking out! I'm still pretty new to this whole process and wasn't sure if the delay was normal or if something was wrong with my claim. Really appreciate community members like you sharing this info 🙏
@Andre Dupont totally understand the confusion! I went through the same thing my first few months. The holiday delays are super predictable once you know the pattern - any federal holiday that falls on Monday will push everything back a day. Memorial Day, Labor Day, MLK Day, Presidents Day, etc. Just bookmark this info for future reference!

If you're having trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor to check on your claim status, I used a service called Claimyr that helped me get connected to an actual agent. They have this system where they call for you and get you through the phone queue - saved me hours of being on hold. Check out claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Might be worth it if you need to speak to someone about your claim.

•Interesting, I didn't know services like that existed. Have you used it recently? The phone lines are definitely impossible to get through.

•Yeah I used it about 3 months ago when my claim got stuck in adjudication. Worked pretty well, got me connected to an agent the same day instead of calling for weeks trying to get through myself.

The whole system is so slow it's ridiculous. They expect people to survive with no income while they take their sweet time processing paperwork. I waited 5 weeks for my first payment because of some stupid verification issue.

•Same here, it's like they don't understand people have bills to pay

•@Anastasia Popov - I feel your stress about the timing! While waiting for your unemployment to process, you might want to look into emergency assistance programs in your area. Many local organizations and churches offer temporary help with rent/utilities while people wait for benefits to kick in. Also check if your county has any emergency rental assistance programs - they can sometimes provide a bridge payment while you re'waiting for unemployment. It s'not ideal but it might help ease some of the immediate pressure.
