Was a bit nervous or untrusting at first, but my calls went thru. First time the wait was a bit long but their customer chat line on their page was helpful and put me at ease that I would receive my call. Whatever you do, ACT FAST!!! The longer these fraudsters collect benefits in your name, the harder it is to fix. Learned this the hard way when someone used my info last year.
Anyone else notice how much identity theft has increased for unemployment specifically? Its gotta be an inside job or a major data breach in the system. Too many people dealing with this same exact issue.
It's because they relaxed all the verification requirements during covid and never tightened them back up properly. Perfect storm for scammers.
I work in IT security and you'd be SHOCKED how bad government systems are protected. Like 1990s level security for some of them.

i had the same question last mnth! press 4 if u want them to take taxes out now. if not then dont press anything. i chose to have them take it out cuz i dont wanna deal with owing later.
PSA to everyone receiving benefits: UNEMPLOYMENT IS TAXABLE INCOME. The feds want about 10%, NY state will want their cut too. Option 4 only covers federal, not state.
THIS!!! Can't stress this enough. I've seen so many people get blindsided at tax time because they didn't know unemployment is taxable.

The NY unemployment system is deliberately complicated to prevent people from getting benefits. It's been this way for YEARS. Identity verification through ID.me is just the security checkpoint - you still need to file an actual claim. Sorry you're dealing with this!

Just an FYI - after you do apply (which yes, is separate from ID verification), don't be surprised if your claim gets flagged for additional verification. Mine was and I couldn't get any benefits for 6 weeks until I could talk to someone. The phone lines are impossible to get through on, I had to use claimyr.com to get a callback from an agent. Frustrating but it finally got resolved.
Saame. My claim was pending for almost 8 weeks because of "verification issues" whatever that means. Calling did nothing until I tried that service too. Suddenly my money appeared three days later 😒

This whole system is a joke. I used to work for a state agency (not unemployment but similar) and I can tell you exactly what's happening: these cases get flagged in their system and put in a special investigation queue. The problem is they have like 5 investigators for thousands of cases. So unless someone manually flags your case as priority, it just sits there forever. You need to find a way to get it prioritized.

I tried for MONTHS to get my claim fixed after identity theft. Called hundreds of times. Finally used claimyr.com and got through to a real person who actually helped. •No they just get you connected to the unemployment office directly. It's like paying someone to wait on hold for you, then they call you when a real agent picks up. The service itself doesn't ask for any personal info.

i wrote a whole frickin LETTER (yes, like on paper) and mailed it to them. got a call back 2 weeks later. Boomer methods sometimes work with boomer systems lol
