Should I press 4 for taxes on ny unemployment claim menu?
Filed for unemployment back in April after my company downsized. I started getting my benefits in May but I'm confused about the tax part on those automated phone menus. When I call into the system and the robot asks me questions, there's this option to press 4 for "unemployment taxes" and I'm not sure if that means I want them to withhold taxes from my benefits or not. I don't want to end up owing a bunch of money next tax season but also don't want to mess up my claim. Anyone know if pressing 4 means they'll take taxes out? I've been just skipping that part because I'm afraid of messing something up and having my payments stopped. My weekly benefit is about $460 if that matters.

Yes, pressing 4 is for tax withholding. It means they'll take out about 10% for federal taxes from each payment. Better to have them take it out now than owe a big chunk next April. NY unemployment is taxable income so you'll need to pay taxes on it one way or another.

•Thx. I was so worried about screwing something up. I'll go ahead and set that up next time I certify.

•Just fyi they dont take out state taxes automatically, just federal. You might still owe NY taxes when filing time comes around.

•Oh crap, good to know! So I should be setting aside some extra money for state taxes then?

•Yea, probably like 4-5% of your benefits to be safe. NYS tax on unemployment is no joke.

After weeks of not being able to get through to anyone at ny unemployment, I found this service called claimyr.com that got me connected to an actual human rep in less than an hour. Talking to an agent got my money unlocked so fast after dealing with this tax question and a few other issues. Check out their explainer video if you're struggling too: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•This sounds too good to be true. Does it actually work? I've been trying to get through for 3 weeks now 😫

•It worked for me! They basically wait on hold for you and then call you when an agent picks up. Was literally the only way I could talk to a live agent after trying for days.

•yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄

•No catch that I found. They just handle the hold time so you don't have to. Best money I ever spent considering how much backpay I was owed.

I HIGHLY recommend having them withhold taxes. I didn't my first time on unemployment and ended up owing over $1200 at tax time. It was a nasty surprise.

Yes, that's exactly what it means. They'll withhold 10% federal tax. Honestly its better to do it now because most people forget that unemployment is taxable income and get hit with a big tax bill later. Option 4 = Yes take out taxes.

•So if my benefit is $460 they'll take out $46 and I'll get $414 weekly? I can handle that if it means no surprises later.

•Exactly. Much easier to budget for slightly less each week than to come up with a big chunk of money all at once at tax time.

Ok here's what the unemployment tax options ACTUALLY mean (I work in accounting): Option 4 = YES, withhold 10% federal tax Skipping = NO withholding Either way you WILL pay tax on unemployment. It's just a question of paying a little each week automatically OR owing it all at tax time. For most people, withholding now prevents headaches later. Remember that NY state tax isn't withheld regardless of what you choose! So even with option 4, you'll still owe some NY state tax. I'd recommend looking at the NY tax tables or talking to an accountant to estimate how much to save. BTW - if you need to change your tax election or have other questions and can't get through on the phones (which is basically everyone these days), use claimyr.com to get a callback from an actual agent. It's the most reliable way to actually speak to someone when you have account issues!

•claimyr isn't a hack, it's just a service that waits on hold for you. They call you when a real person picks up. Saved me hours of hold time.

Just saying as someone who didnt chose to have taxes withheld... BIG MISTAKE. I owed almost $2000 at tax time and had to set up a payment plan with IRS. Just have them take it out now!

•Yikes! Definitely gonna press 4 then. I don't need that kind of bill surprise.

The ny unemployment system is such crap. I've been trying to change my tax withholding for 3 weeks and can't get through on the phone. Anyone know if you can change this online?

•Not possible online. You gotta call. I used claimyr.com after 2 weeks of failed attempts. They got me through to change my tax selection.

can someone explain why they make this so confusing??? i swear the unemployment system wants us to make mistakes 🤬

•They make it confusing so they can deny benefits later and save money. Been dealing with this for 20+ years on and off. The system is DESIGNED to be a headache.

•thats so messed up. we pay into this system our whole working lives and then they make it impossible to use.

It's really simple - press 4 if you want less money now to avoid a tax bill later. Don't press 4 if you'd rather deal with taxes yourself later. Personally I always have them withhold because I'm terrible at saving money lol.

i had the same question last mnth! press 4 if u want them to take taxes out now. if not then dont press anything. i chose to have them take it out cuz i dont wanna deal with owing later.

PSA to everyone receiving benefits: UNEMPLOYMENT IS TAXABLE INCOME. The feds want about 10%, NY state will want their cut too. Option 4 only covers federal, not state.

•THIS!!! Can't stress this enough. I've seen so many people get blindsided at tax time because they didn't know unemployment is taxable.
