Need help getting NJ DMV duplicate title from California - Letter of Certification confusion
Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a pickle. I moved from New Jersey to California and I can't find my vehicle title. I need to get a duplicate title from the NJ DMV, but I'm not sure how to go about it from out of state. I've got most of the paperwork ready (registration, license, application, etc.), but I'm stuck on getting a Letter of Certification. Has anyone gone through this process before? Any tips on expediting the whole thing? I'm kinda lost here and could use some advice.

Ugh, dealing with the DMV is always a nightmare, especially across state lines. I feel for you, OP. Have you tried calling them directly? Sometimes you can get lucky and find a helpful person on the other end.

•Thanks for the sympathy! Yeah, I'm planning to call them, just wanted to gather some info first so I don't sound like a complete idiot on the phone lol

•Pro tip: call right when they open. Less wait time and the employees aren't burnt out yet 😉

I went through something similar last year. Here's what you need to do: 1. Fill out the duplicate title application form (BA-49) 2. Get a copy of your current registration 3. Provide a copy of your driver's license 4. Include a check for the fee (I think it's $60) 5. Take a clear photo of your VIN 6. For the Letter of Certification, you actually need to request this from the NJ DMV directly. Call them and ask for it specifically. Once you have everything, mail it to: NJ Motor Vehicle Commission Special Title Unit P.O. Box 017 Trenton, NJ 08666-0017 Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any questions.

•Wow, thank you so much for the detailed breakdown! This is exactly what I needed. Quick question - did you have any luck expediting the process?

•Glad I could help! As for expediting, I didn't try, but I've heard if you explain your situation (out of state, urgent need, etc.) they might be able to speed things up. Worth asking when you call!

Have you considered using a third-party service? There are companies that specialize in dealing with DMV stuff across state lines. Might cost a bit more, but could save you a ton of headache.

•I hadn't thought of that! Do you have any recommendations?

•I don't have personal experience, but I've heard good things about DMV.org and US Reg Services. Might be worth checking out!

Hey, I found a method to get someone on the phone at the DMV. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's the link: https://www.claimyr.com

•Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit?

•I was skeptical at first too, but it really did work for me. Saved me hours of hold time.

•How does it actually work? Do they just keep calling until they get through?

•From what I understand, they use some kind of automated system to navigate the phone menus and wait on hold. When a real person picks up, it connects to your phone. Pretty clever tbh.

Ive been in the same boat, OP. One thing to keep in mind is that sometimes the DMV can be really picky about the quality of the VIN photo. Make sure its super clear and all digits are visible. learned that the hard way 🙄

Question for those who've done this: How long did the whole process take from start to finish? I might be in a similar situation soon and need to plan accordingly.

•In my experience, it took about 4-6 weeks from mailing everything in to receiving the new title. But this was pre-covid, so it might be different now.
