DMV mailed title to new address, only got registration. Need title ASAP for car sale. Help!
Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a pickle. I sold my car but I'm having trouble with the title. The DMV said they mailed it to my new address, but I only got the registration. Now I have a buyer waiting and I'm not sure what to do. Anyone been through this before? What's the fastest way to get my hands on that title so I can complete the sale?

Ugh, the DMV is such a pain! I've been there before. Your best bet is to request a duplicate title ASAP. You can usually do this online or in person at your local DMV office. Just be prepared to pay a fee.

•Thanks for the tip! Do you know how long it usually takes to get the duplicate?

•It can vary, but in my experience, it took about 2 weeks. If you're in a hurry, some states offer expedited service for an extra fee. Worth checking out!

•2 weeks?! 😱 That's crazy long. OP, you might wanna let your buyer know it could take a bit. Better to be upfront, ya know?

Have you tried calling the DMV to see if they can track the original title? Sometimes it gets lost in the mail or sent to the wrong address. Might save you some time and money if you can get them to resend it.

I found a method to get someone on the phone at the DMV. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/xOmflIfTHrA

•Sounds too good to be true. Does it really work? 🤔

•It worked for me! Saved me hours of hold time. Totally worth the 20 bucks imho.

•Idk man, paying to talk to a government agency feels wrong. Shouldn't this be free?

•I get where you're coming from, but time is money. I'd rather pay $20 than waste half a day on hold. 🤷♂️

Here's what you need to do: 1. Go to your state's DMV website 2. Look for the form called "Application for Duplicate Title" (it might have a different name depending on your state) 3. Fill out the form completely - make sure all info matches your registration 4. Pay the required fee (varies by state) 5. Submit the form online if possible, or in person for faster processing 6. If you're in a rush, ask about expedited service Pro tip: Bring your current registration and a valid ID if you go in person. It'll smooth things out. Good luck!

•Great advice! Just wanna add, some states let you print a temporary title while waiting for the official one. Might be worth asking about that too.

Have you considered just selling the car without the title? You could do a bill of sale and then transfer the title to the new owner once you get it. Might be risky tho, check your local laws first.

•NO NO NO! Do NOT do this! It's asking for trouble. Always have the title in hand before selling. Trust me, I learned this the hard way. 😫

•Yikes, good point. Scratch that idea then. Better safe than sorry!

This happened to me last year. Turns out the DMV had my old address on file for the title but my new address for registration. Double-check they have your correct address for BOTH. Could save you a headache.

Hot take: the whole vehicle title system is outdated AF. Why isn't this all digital by now? We can transfer thousands of dollars instantly but a car title takes weeks? Make it make sense 🤦♂️

•Preach! 🙌 The government needs to get with the times. Blockchain could solve this so easily.

•Yeah right, like the DMV could handle blockchain 😂 They can barely handle paper
