DMV Notice of Transfer didn't confirm - What now?

Hey everyone, I just sold my car and submitted the notice of transfer to the DMV online. The problem is, the page closed before I got a confirmation and now I'm not sure if it went through. Has anyone else had this issue? I'm worried about getting stuck with tickets or fees if the new owner does something stupid. Any advice on how to make sure the transfer was recorded?

Ugh, the DMV website is such a pain! I had a similar issue when I was trying to renew my registration. Have you tried logging back in to see if theres any record of the transfer?

Yeah, I tried that but couldn't find anything. It's like it never happened 😫

Classic DMV... their website is stuck in 1995 🙄

Oof, that sucks. Maybe try calling them? I know its a pain, but might be worth it for peace of mind.

I found a method to get someone on the phone at the DMV. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's the URL: https://claimyr.com

Sounds too good to be true. Does it really work?

0 coins

Yep, it really does! Saved me hours of hold time. Worth every penny imo

Idk man, paying to talk to a government agency feels wrong. Shouldnt this be free?

I get it, but think about how much your time is worth. For me, not sitting on hold for 3 hours is def worth $20

Pro tip: Always screenshot your confirmation page when dealing with the DMV online. Learned that the hard way 😅

Have you checked your email? Sometimes they send a confirmation there even if the website doesnt show it.

Good idea! Just checked but no luck. Guess I'm back to square one 😞

This happened to me last year. Here's what you need to do: 1. Call the DMV (I know, it sucks) 2. Ask for a 'Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability' status 3. If they can't find it, file a new one over the phone 4. Get a confirmation number and write it down! 5. Follow up with a certified letter to the DMV with all the details It's a pain, but it'll save you from potential headaches down the road. Good luck!

Wow, thank you so much for the detailed advice! This is super helpful. Gonna try this tomorrow 🙏

Is there a local DMV office you can visit? Sometimes its easier to sort these things out in person.

There is, but the wait times are insane. Might have to bite the bullet tho

If you go, bring a book and snacks. And maybe a pillow 😴

Had the exact same thing happen to me! The DMV website is notorious for this. Here's what worked for me: go to the DMV website and look for the "Vehicle/Vessel Transfer and Reassignment" section - there's usually a way to check the status of your submission using your license plate or VIN. If that doesn't work, you can also try calling their automated phone system at (800) 777-0133 - sometimes it can tell you if they have a record of your transfer without having to wait for a human. Worth trying before spending money on those callback services!

This is super helpful! I didn't know about that status check feature. Definitely going to try the automated phone system first before going the paid route. Thanks for sharing! 🙏

For future reference, you can also submit the Notice of Transfer by mail using form REG 138. Just fill it out, make copies for your records, and send it certified mail to the DMV. It's old school but sometimes more reliable than their website! The form is available on the DMV website under "Forms & Publications." Keep that certified mail receipt - it's proof you submitted it within the required 5-day window.

This is great advice! I wish I had known about the mail option before trying the website. The certified mail receipt is a really smart tip - having that paper trail could save so much hassle if there are any disputes later. Definitely keeping this in mind for next time!

I went through this exact nightmare last month! The DMV website glitched on me too during the notice of transfer. What I ended up doing was going to a DMV field office with all my paperwork - the bill of sale, title transfer, etc. The clerk was able to look up in their system and confirm that my online submission actually DID go through, even though I never got a confirmation. Apparently this happens more often than you'd think. If you have your reference number or transaction ID from when you started the process, bring that with you - it helps them track it down. Also, make sure you have the buyer's info handy just in case you need to resubmit. Better safe than sorry when it comes to liability issues!

This gives me so much hope! I was starting to panic that I'd be stuck with liability issues. I think I do have a transaction ID saved somewhere in my browser history. Going to try calling first like others suggested, but if that doesn't work I'll definitely head to the field office with all my paperwork. Thanks for sharing your experience - it's reassuring to know the submission might have actually gone through even without the confirmation! 🤞

Been there! The DMV's website is so unreliable. One thing I'd add to all the great advice here - if you do end up having to resubmit, take screenshots of EVERY step of the process, not just the final confirmation. I learned to screenshot each page as I go through their forms now. Also, if you paid any fees during the original submission, check your bank/credit card statement - sometimes the charge going through is proof the transaction completed even if you didn't get a web confirmation. The DMV can use payment records to track down your submission too. Hope you get it sorted out quickly!

Great point about taking screenshots throughout the whole process! I never thought about checking the bank statement for payment confirmation - that's actually genius. The DMV systems are so interconnected that a payment record could definitely help them track down the submission. I'm going to check my card statement right now before I try calling them. Thanks for the tip about screenshotting every step too - definitely doing that for any future DMV transactions! 📸

Another thing to try - if you remember roughly what time you submitted it, you can ask the DMV to search their system logs for that timeframe with your info. I had to do this once when their system crashed mid-transaction. The tech support person was actually able to find my submission buried in their database even though it never generated a confirmation number. Also, keep an eye on your credit report over the next few months - if the new owner gets any violations and the transfer didn't go through properly, it might show up there first before you get official notice. Fingers crossed your submission went through! 🤞

Wow, asking them to search system logs by timeframe is such a smart approach! I never would have thought of that. And the credit report monitoring tip is really good too - I hadn't considered that violations might show up there first. Definitely going to keep an eye on that over the next few months just in case. This whole thread has been incredibly helpful - so many different angles to try! Starting with the automated phone line and payment confirmation check, then escalating to the system log search if needed. Thanks everyone! 🙏

Just went through this same headache last week! The DMV website has been having issues lately. Here's what I did: First, check if you got charged for any fees during the process - if money was taken, the transaction likely went through even without confirmation. Second, try logging into your DMV account online and look under "Transaction History" or "Recent Activity" - sometimes it shows up there even when the confirmation page fails. If neither of those work, call the DMV at (800) 777-0133 and have your license plate number ready. The automated system can sometimes tell you if they have a record of your notice of transfer. Don't panic too much - you have 5 days from the sale date to get this sorted, and most of the time these glitchy submissions actually do make it into their system. Keep all your sale paperwork handy just in case you need to resubmit!

0 coins

This is excellent step-by-step advice! I really appreciate the detail about checking transaction history in the DMV account - I completely forgot that might show recent activity even when confirmations fail. The 5-day window reminder is helpful too, takes some of the pressure off. Going to try the automated phone system first thing tomorrow morning with my plate number ready. It's reassuring to hear that these glitchy submissions usually do make it through their system. Thanks for breaking it down so clearly! 🙏

This is such a common issue with the DMV website! I work in customer service for a government agency and see this kind of thing all the time. One thing that might help - if you used Chrome or another browser that saves form data, try going back to the DMV transfer page and see if any of your information auto-fills. Sometimes that's a sign the form was actually submitted even if you didn't get confirmation. Also, the DMV usually processes these transfers within 24-48 hours, so you could try calling their main line tomorrow and asking them to check by your name and the vehicle VIN. If all else fails, you can always submit a duplicate notice - they'll just merge it with the original if it did go through. Better to be safe than sorry when it comes to liability! 🚗

0 coins

That's a really clever tip about checking if form data auto-fills! I never thought about that being a potential indicator that the submission went through. The 24-48 hour processing timeframe is good to know too - gives me a better sense of when to follow up. I like your point about submitting a duplicate if needed since they can merge it with the original. Definitely better to have redundancy than risk liability issues. Thanks for the insider perspective from working in government customer service! 👍

I've been in this exact situation before! The DMV website crashed on me right after I hit submit. Here's what saved me: go to your browser history and look for any reference numbers or confirmation codes that might have appeared briefly before the page closed. Even if you didn't see the full confirmation, sometimes there's a partial URL with a transaction ID that the DMV can use to track your submission. Also, if you have a MyDMV account, log in and check your dashboard - sometimes the transfer shows up there even when the confirmation page fails. I found my submission that way after panicking for hours thinking it didn't go through. If you can't find anything, definitely call them with your VIN and sale date - they're usually pretty good about finding "lost" submissions in their system. Don't stress too much, this happens way more often than it should! 😅

0 coins

This is such a smart approach! I never thought to check browser history for partial URLs or transaction IDs. That's actually brilliant - even if the confirmation page crashed, there might still be breadcrumbs in the URL that could help the DMV track it down. I'm definitely going to dig through my browser history tonight and see if I can find any reference numbers. The MyDMV dashboard tip is great too - logging in there right now to check! It's so reassuring to hear this happens frequently and that the DMV staff are used to tracking down these "lost" submissions. Thanks for sharing your experience! 🙏

This thread is so helpful! I'm bookmarking it for future reference. One more tip that might help - if you're still within the 5-day window, you could also try going to a DMV kiosk (they're usually at grocery stores or malls). Sometimes those are less buggy than the main website and you can complete the transfer there. They print out a receipt on the spot so you get immediate confirmation. Also, if you do end up having to call or visit in person, write down the name of whoever helps you and get a case number if possible. That way if anything comes up later, you have a record of your efforts to resolve it. The DMV can be frustrating but this community always has great solutions! 💪

Great point about the DMV kiosks! I totally forgot those existed. There's actually one at my local Safeway that I've walked past a million times. That might be way easier than dealing with the phone system or waiting at the main office. And you're absolutely right about getting names and case numbers - I learned that lesson the hard way with other government agencies. Documentation is everything! This whole thread has been a goldmine of practical advice. Thanks for adding another solid option to try! 🙌

Hey! I just went through this exact same nightmare a few weeks ago. The DMV website is absolutely terrible - I swear it crashes more often than it works! Here's what ended up working for me: I called the main DMV number (800-777-0133) early in the morning around 8 AM and surprisingly got through pretty quickly. The rep was able to find my "lost" submission by searching with my license plate number and VIN. Turns out it actually DID go through, even though I never got confirmation! She said this happens constantly and they usually find the submissions buried in their system. Definitely try calling first before paying for any callback services or driving to an office. And next time (hopefully there won't be one!), I'm definitely taking screenshots of every single page like others mentioned. Good luck! 🤞
