Lost IRS refund check - what to do?
Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a pickle. I was supposed to get a refund check from the IRS but it seems to have gotten lost in the mail or something. Has anyone dealt with this before? What should I do to track it down or get it reissued? Any advice would be really appreciated!

Ugh, that sucks! I've been there before. First thing you should do is check the IRS website for the 'Where's My Refund' tool. It might give you some info on whether the check was actually sent out or not.

•Thanks for the tip! I'll definitely check that out. Do you know how long it usually takes for the info to update on there?

•In my experience, it can take anywhere from a few days to a couple weeks. The IRS isn't exactly known for their speedy service lol 🐌

•Yeah, the 'Where's My Refund' tool is hit or miss. Sometimes it's spot on, other times it's about as useful as a chocolate teapot 🍫☕

If it's been more than 4 weeks since the check was supposed to arrive, you can request a payment trace from the IRS. You'll need to fill out Form 3911. It's a bit of a hassle, but it's the official way to get them to look into it.

•Oh man, more paperwork 😩 But I guess that's the way to go. Thanks for the info!

•Form 3911 is actually not that bad. I had to do it last year. Just make sure you have all your tax info handy when you fill it out.

Have you moved recently? Sometimes checks get returned to the IRS if they can't deliver them. Make sure your address is up to date with them.

I found a method to get someone on the phone at the IRS. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

•Sounds kinda sketchy. Is it legit? $20 seems steep just to make a phone call.

•I get the skepticism, but it's totally legit. Saved me hours of hold time. Worth every penny when you're dealing with something important like a lost refund check.

•How long did it take for them to actually connect you with an agent?

•It took about 2 hours, but I didn't have to sit there listening to hold music. They called me when an agent was on the line. Way better than wasting half a day on hold yourself.

Here's what you need to do: 1. Check the 'Where's My Refund' tool on the IRS website 2. If it's been more than 4 weeks since the scheduled mail date, initiate a payment trace using Form 3911 3. Make sure your address is up to date with the IRS 4. If you can't get through on the phone, consider using a service like Claimyr to connect with an agent 5. Be patient - sometimes these things take time to resolve Remember, the IRS is dealing with millions of returns, so it might take a while to sort out. But don't give up! Keep following up until you get your refund.

•Wow, thanks for laying it all out like that! This is super helpful. I'll start working through these steps right away.

•This is great advice. I'd add one more thing: keep detailed records of all your interactions with the IRS, including dates and names of anyone you talk to. It can help if you need to escalate the issue later.

This happened to me last year. Turns out my check was stolen and cashed by someone else. It was a nightmare to sort out. Make sure you keep an eye on your credit report just in case.

•Oh no, that's terrifying! How long did it take to resolve? Did you eventually get your refund?

•It took about 3 months to get it all sorted. Yeah, I eventually got my refund, but I had to file a police report and everything. It was a whole thing.

Pro tip: Next time, opt for direct deposit. It's faster and you don't have to worry about lost checks. Plus, it's better for the environment! 🌱
