IRS refund check sent to old address after temporary move - help!
Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a pickle. I had to move in with family temporarily and now my refund check is being sent to my old address. Has anyone dealt with this before? What's the best way to handle it with the IRS? I'm worried about missing out on my refund or it getting lost in the mail.

Ugh, been there done that. Here's what you need to do: 1. Call the IRS ASAP. Like yesterday. 2. Have your SSN, old and new addresses ready. 3. Explain the situation calmly (even if you're freaking out inside). 4. Ask them to confirm they'll update your address for future stuff. 5. Consider filing a Form 8822 for good measure. Good luck! The IRS can be a pain, but they're usually pretty good about this stuff if you catch it early.

•This is solid advice. I'd add: make sure to follow up with USPS to forward your mail too, just in case.

•True, getting through can be tough. But it's worth the effort for something important like a refund check!

Pro tip: If you can't get through to the IRS by phone, try contacting your local Taxpayer Advocate Service. They can sometimes help push things through faster.

•This! 👆 The Taxpayer Advocate Service is a lifesaver. They helped me resolve a similar issue in half the time.

Have you considered setting up direct deposit for future refunds? Might save you some headaches down the road.

Guys, I found a method to actually get someone on the phone at the IRS. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

•I was skeptical too, but it really did work for me. Saved me hours of frustration.

Whatever you do, DON'T just sit and wait. My cousin did that and his check got sent back to the IRS. Took him months to sort it out.

Am I the only one who thinks its ridiculous that we have to jump through so many hoops just to get our own money back? 🙄 The system is broken.

•Preach! 🙌 It's 2023, why can't they just use email or something?

Just went through this same nightmare last month! Here's what worked for me: I called the IRS early morning (like 7:30 AM) when the lines first open - way better chance of getting through. They were able to stop the check from being mailed and reissue it to my new address. The whole process took about 3 weeks total. Also, definitely file that Form 8822 that Luca mentioned - it'll save you from this headache in the future. Hang in there, it'll work out! 🤞
