IRS sent refund check to old address after move - how to update?

Hey everyone, I recently moved and my tax refund check was sent to my old address. I'm not sure what to do now. Has anyone dealt with this before? Any advice on how to update my address with the IRS or get my check resent?

I found a way to solve IRS tax refund address change, watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1xkV28yqFXE

Been there, done that. You need to fill out Form 8822 to update your address with the IRS. It's pretty straightforward: 1. Download the form from the IRS website 2. Fill in your old and new addresses 3. Include your SSN 4. Sign and date it 5. Mail it to the address on the form Once they process it, they should resend your check to the new address. Good luck!

This is super helpful, thanks! How long did it take for them to process your form?

It took about 4-6 weeks for me, but I've heard it can vary. Just be patient and keep an eye on your mailbox!

Quick question - do you need to include any supporting documents with the form?

Nope, just the completed form is enough. They don't ask for proof of address or anything like that.

Ugh, the IRS is such a pain to deal with. I swear they make everything 10x more complicated than it needs to be 🙄

Tell me about it! I once spent 3 hours on hold just to ask a simple question. It's ridiculous.

Have you tried calling them? Sometimes you can get things sorted out faster over the phone.

I tried, but I couldn't get through. The hold times are insane!

Pro tip: I found a way to get someone on the phone fast. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Jc9x-gysK0

Wait, seriously? That sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

Yep, I've used it twice now. Saved me hours of frustration. Totally worth the 20 bucks imho.

Idk man, paying to talk to a government agency feels wrong somehow. But I guess if it works... 🤷‍♂️

This happened to me last year. I ended up having to file a claim for a lost check. It was a whole ordeal, took like 3 months to get my money. Hope you have better luck!

Have you checked if you can update your address online? I think the IRS has some kinda portal for that now.

Last I checked, you can only do that if you haven't filed your return yet. Once the check is sent, you gotta use the form or call.

🤣🤣🤣 ain't that the truth

Just a heads up, if you're expecting any other gov't mail (like stimulus checks or whatever), make sure to update your address with USPS too. They have a mail forwarding service that's pretty reliable.

Anyone else think its crazy that in 2023 we still have to deal with paper checks? Like, direct deposit exists for a reason, people!

Preach! 🙌 The government needs to get with the times.

Some folks don't have bank accounts tho. Gotta think about everyone.

I had this exact same issue a couple years ago! In addition to Form 8822 that Carmen mentioned, you might also want to contact your old address (if possible) to see if the check is still there. Sometimes neighbors or the new residents are helpful about forwarding mail. Also, if it's been more than a few weeks since the check was issued, you can request a trace on it by calling the IRS. Just have your SSN and tax info ready when you call. The whole process is annoying but totally fixable!

This is really solid advice! I never thought about contacting the old address directly - that's actually pretty smart. Quick question though - when you say "request a trace," is that different from just asking them to reissue the check? And do you remember roughly how long the trace process took?

Hey Yuki! I went through this exact same thing about 6 months ago. Here's what worked for me: First, definitely fill out Form 8822 like Carmen suggested - that's the most important step. But also call the IRS refund hotline at 800-829-1954 and let them know what happened. They can put a stop payment on the original check and reissue it to your new address once they process your address change. The whole thing took about 6-8 weeks total for me, but at least I didn't have to worry about someone else cashing my check. Also pro tip: set up direct deposit for next year so you don't have to deal with this again! Good luck!
