IRS refund on hold after address change - what to ask agent?
Hey everyone, I'm having some issues with my tax refund and I'm hoping someone here can help. I recently moved and updated my address with the IRS in person at their office. Now I'm finding out that my refund is on hold and I'm not sure why. Has anyone else dealt with this? What should I ask when I finally get through to an agent?

Ugh, dealing with the IRS is such a pain. I've been there before. Here's what you should ask when you get through: 1. Why is your refund on hold? 2. What do you need to do to resolve it? 3. How long will it take to process once you've done what they need? Good luck, hope you get it sorted soon!

•Thanks for the advice! I'll definitely ask those questions. Have you had any experience with refund holds before?

•Yeah, unfortunately I have. Mine was on hold because they needed to verify my identity. Took about 3 weeks to resolve after I sent in the required documents. Just be patient and follow their instructions carefully.

•This is solid advice. I'd also suggest asking if there were any notices sent to your old address that you might have missed. Better to cover all bases!

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone at the IRS. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

•Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit? Anyone else tried it?

•I know it sounds sketchy, but I swear it's legit. Saved me hours of hold time. Worth every penny imo.

•I'm skeptical. Why should we have to pay to talk to a government agency? 🤔

•I get the skepticism, but think about it this way - how much is your time worth? For me, not sitting on hold for hours was totally worth the $20. But to each their own! 🤷♂️

Have you checked the "Where's My Refund" tool on the IRS website? Sometimes that can give you more info without having to call.

•Yeah, I tried that first. It just says it's being processed, but doesn't give any details about the hold. 😕

•Ah, bummer. Sounds like you'll def need to talk to a human then. Good luck!

I'm in the same boat, OP. Moved last year and now my refund's MIA. Let us know what you find out when you get through!

Pro tip: call early in the morning right when they open. You're more likely to get through quickly. Also, Tuesdays and Wednesdays tend to be less busy than Mondays or Fridays.

Here's my comprehensive guide to dealing with IRS refund holds based on personal experience and research: 1. Don't panic. Refund holds are common and often easily resolved. 2. Gather all relevant documents: tax returns, W-2s, 1099s, etc. 3. Check the IRS2Go app or "Where's My Refund" tool for updates. 4. If you must call, be prepared with: - Your Social Security number - Filing status - Exact refund amount 5. Common reasons for holds include: - Identity verification - Income verification - Math errors on your return - Suspected fraud 6. If it's an identity issue, you may need to verify in person at an IRS office. 7. Be patient. Even after resolving the issue, it can take 6-8 weeks for processing. 8. Consider setting up direct deposit for faster refunds in the future. 9. If you're facing financial hardship due to the delay, mention this to the IRS agent. They may be able to expedite your case. Remember, most holds are resolved within a few weeks. Stay calm and persistent!

Serious question: has anyone ever successfully gotten through to the IRS without wanting to pull their hair out? Asking for a friend (it's me, I'm the friend
