Filed for AZ unemployment but now in California - EDD transfer help needed

So I moved from Arizona to California about 3 weeks ago. I had an active unemployment claim in Arizona that I've been certifying for since January. Now that I've moved, I'm confused about what happens to my benefits. Do I need to close my Arizona claim and file a new one with California EDD? Or is there some kind of transfer process? I called the Arizona DES office but they gave me conflicting information - one person said I could keep certifying with them, another said I needed to file with California now that I've changed my address. Anyone been through this interstate benefits situation before? Really need this sorted as I have rent due next week and don't want to mess up my claim.

You need to file a new claim with California EDD as soon as possible. Interstate transfers are complicated - Arizona won't keep paying you once you've established residency in California. But, if you have wages in Arizona during your base period, you might be eligible for what's called a "Combined Wage Claim" through California EDD. Make sure to mention your active Arizona claim when you file with California.

Thanks for the info! Do you know if there's going to be a gap in payments while they process the new claim? I'm worried about how long California EDD might take.

Really? The Arizona rep told me it might be fraud to keep certifying there when I'm no longer an Arizona resident. I don't want to get in trouble.

The previous commenter is incorrect. You should NOT continue certifying with Arizona if you've permanently moved to California. This could potentially result in an overpayment situation that you'd have to pay back. You need to notify Arizona of your move and file a new claim with California EDD immediately.

I went through EXACTLY this nightmare last year! Arizona told me to keep certifying while California processed my claim, then California said I should have stopped immediately, and I ended up with a $2,800 overpayment notice from Arizona!!! Now I'm on a payment plan and they take 25% of my current benefits to pay it back. The interstate system is BROKEN!!

Oh no, that sounds terrible! Did you have to pay back the whole amount? I definitely don't want to end up in that situation.

Yep, every penny. And Arizona added a penalty fee too because they said I should have known better. The EDD systems don't talk to each other AT ALL between states. It's ridiculous.

Went through this in 2025 when I moved from Oregon. Here's what you need to do: 1. Contact Arizona unemployment ASAP and tell them your last day of AZ residency 2. File a new claim with California EDD right away 3. Be prepared for a 3-4 week gap in payments (California is slow) 4. When filing with California, make sure to list ALL your employers from the previous 18 months, including any in Arizona You'll need to complete an eligibility interview with California since you're coming from another state. They're backed up right now, but I was able to get through using Claimyr (claimyr.com) - they connected me to an EDD agent in under 20 minutes when I couldn't get through for days. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km Hope this helps! Interstate transfers are a pain but you'll get through it.

This is super helpful, thank you! I'll check out that service - I tried calling California EDD yesterday and couldn't get through at all. Did California backdate your claim to when you stopped receiving Oregon benefits?

Yes, they did backdate it, but I had to specifically request that during my eligibility interview. Make sure to mention it clearly to the EDD representative. They won't automatically know you need backdating.

My cousin moved from AZ to CA and she told me that you have to let Arizona know you're leaving the state within 10 days or they can consider it fraud. Something about their residential requirements? Not 100% sure on the details but thought I'd mention it. good luck!!

Let me provide some technical clarification on this: 1. You must report your change of address to Arizona DES immediately. You cannot legally continue to collect Arizona benefits once you've established permanent residency in California. 2. File a new claim with California EDD. Under federal law, you can transfer your wage credits from Arizona to California through the Interstate Combined Wage program. 3. There will likely be a processing gap. California EDD is taking approximately 2-3 weeks to process new claims, and interstate claims often take longer. 4. You will need to complete a phone interview for an interstate claim. These are currently being scheduled about 10-14 days out. 5. Important: You must be able to document your move date. Have lease agreements, change of address confirmations, or utility bills ready to verify your timeline. Interstate claims are more complex than standard claims, but the system does work if you follow the proper procedures. Don't panic about the gap - if approved, you'll receive back payments for all eligible weeks.

Thank you so much for this detailed information. I have my lease agreement and California driver's license appointment confirmation email that should work as proof. I'll get on filing with California EDD today.

Just went thru this!! AZ payment system is waaaaaay better than California's, get ready for frustration with the EDD portal lol. Make sure you have your Arizona unemployment award letter when you file with CA because they'll want to see your previous benefit amount details. Also their certification questions are different so read carefully!

Update: I followed everyone's advice and notified Arizona DES about my move. I also filed a new claim with California EDD yesterday. The online system was actually pretty straightforward, though I got confused about how to report my Arizona benefits. Hoping I did it correctly! Now I'm just waiting for the next steps. Thanks everyone for the help - will update when I hear back from California.

Sounds like you're on the right track. Don't be surprised if you get a letter requesting additional information about your Arizona claim. Just respond promptly and you should be fine. Good luck!
