Varo Bank refund deposit date 4/12 but nothing received yet - always get taxes 2 days early

I filed my taxes on March 15th and got accepted the same day. My WMR shows that my refund is supposed to be deposited on April 12th but I still haven't received anything. I bank with Varo and always get my direct deposits 2 days early, including previous tax refunds. Anyone else with Varo experiencing delays? Whats weird is I already got my state refund last week but no sign of federal yet. I checked my transcript and everything looks normal, no holds or anything suspicious. It's stressing me out because I was counting on that money for some bills.

I work at a tax office and can tell you that this year has been weird with direct deposit timing. The IRS sends the money in batches, and sometimes banks hold it even when they claim 'early deposits'. The good news is that if your WMR shows April 12th, it's definitely coming. The IRS has released your funds, but there could be processing delays between the IRS, ACH network, and Varo. I'd give it until end of day tomorrow - if you still don't see it by then, call Varo to check if they're holding it for any reason. This happens sometimes with larger deposits for fraud prevention.

Thanks, that's actually good to know. I'll give it another day then reach out to Varo if nothing happens. Do you know if the IRS would notify me if there was some kind of problem?

The IRS would typically send a letter if they were withholding your refund, and your WMR status would change. Since it still shows a DDD (direct deposit date) of 4/12, the ball is likely in Varo's court now.

Just to add - I had the EXACT same issue with Varo last year. Showed as deposited in WMR but Varo took 3 extra days. When I called they said they were 'verifying' it 🙄

Ugh thats super frustrating! Did they end up releasing it without any additional steps or did you have to do something?

Nope, just had to wait it out. It showed up randomly at like 9pm on a Tuesday. No notification or anything. Varo is weird with large deposits sometimes.

You should check your transcript with taxr.ai - it will show you exactly what's happening behind the scenes with your refund. I was in a similar situation last month, and even though my WMR showed a direct deposit date, there was actually a review code on my transcript that I completely missed. Taxr.ai analyzed my transcript and showed me what was actually happening and gave me a timeline of when I'd get paid. Way better than trying to decode all those weird IRS codes and dates yourself! https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It's pretty comprehensive. You upload your transcript and it explains every code in plain English, tells you if there are any issues, and gives you a realistic timeline based on your specific situation. It even tells you what actions you should take. Honestly saved me weeks of stress!

OMG I just tried this and it was a game changer! I've been staring at my transcript for weeks trying to figure out what was happening, and taxr.ai explained everything in like 5 minutes. Turns out I missed a review code buried in there that explains why my deposit is delayed. EVERYONE should be using this!

Yes there is a fee, but honestly it's worth every penny. I spent HOURS trying to figure out my transcript before finding this. The peace of mind alone was worth it - plus it gave me an exact timeline instead of just guessing.

After waiting for ages on my refund, I finally got through to an IRS agent using Claimyr.com and they explained exactly what was happening with my deposit. I'd been trying the regular IRS number for WEEKS with no luck. The agent confirmed my deposit was actually scheduled for processing and gave me the exact date. So much easier than just waiting and wondering! Literally got a callback from an IRS agent in under an hour - best money i ever spent.

Wait what exactly is Claimyr? I've never heard of this and I'm desperate to talk to someone at the IRS about my refund

It's a service that basically navigates the IRS phone system for you and gets you a callback from an agent. You know how impossible it is to get through to the IRS? This actually works. You give them your number and they call you when they have an agent on the line. Saved me hours of frustration.

100% works. I was skeptical too but I was desperate. Had an actual IRS agent on the phone within an hour. They were able to tell me exactly what was happening with my refund and when I could expect it.

I can vouch for this too. Used it last week after trying for DAYS to get through the normal way. Worth every penny considering I was about to lose my mind on hold music 😂

I have Varo and had the EXACT same issue. My DDD was 4/10 and I just got my deposit today (4/13). I called Varo yesterday and they said they didn't see anything pending, but then it magically appeared this morning. Their early deposit feature seems to be hit or miss with tax refunds specifically. My regular paychecks always come 2 days early but taxes seem to follow different rules for some reason.

That's really reassuring to hear, thank you! Did they give you any explanation for why it was delayed?

Typical customer service non-answer... 'systems processing time' or something vague. But the important thing is it did come through eventually!

This happened to me last year - turned out Varo was holding it for 'security reasons' because it was a larger deposit than my normal pattern. Had to call them and verify some info before they released it. Super annoying but they claimed it was for fraud protection. Worth giving them a call.

check your transcript! honestly my WMR has been wrong so many times but my transcript has always been accurate. you can get it online from the IRS website. it will show if there are any holds or reviews on your account that the WMR doesnt show.

Thanks, I did check my transcript but it's so confusing to read. It shows the refund amount and date but doesn't seem to indicate any issues. Just a bunch of codes I don't understand.

use taxr.ai to read your transcript - it explains all those weird codes! I used to spend hours googling what each code meant but this tool breaks it all down for you. shows you exactly whats going on with your refund. saved me so much stress https://taxr.ai

The IRS is a clown show this year 🤡 My wife and I filed the same day. She got her refund in 8 days, I'm still waiting after 32 days with the same bank. Makes absolutely no sense.

Same boat! My roommate filed a week after me and got hers already. Mine's just sitting there with no explanation. The whole system is broken.

Don't even bother with the regular number. I used Claimyr.com to get through and actually spoke to someone after weeks of trying. They explained exactly what was happening with mine - turns out there was a review that wasn't showing on WMR.

I bank with Chime which also advertises the 2-day early deposits. For regular paychecks it works like clockwork, but for tax refunds it's been hit or miss. Last year I got it right on the actual DDD, not early. Something about how the IRS batches and releases the funds makes the 'early deposit' feature unreliable for tax refunds specifically.

Same experience with Current! Always get my paycheck early but tax refund came right on the actual date the IRS stated.

have u checked your actual bank account on the varo app or just the WMR tool? sometimes WMR is slow to update. also make sure the bank account info u put on your tax return is correct - i made that mistake once and it delayed everything.

-

Miguel Diaz

Yeah I've been checking the Varo app obsessively lol. And I double checked my return, the account number is definitely correct. I've been using the same account for years.

The IRS is so backlogged this year they're not even following their own published deposit dates. I was supposed to get mine on 3/29 but it didn't hit until 4/3. If your WMR still shows the 4/12 date without any errors, just be patient for a few more days. Also remember that the 'early deposit' feature at these online banks is just a marketing gimmick - they can't release funds before the IRS actually sends them.

Sometimes the IRS sends a test deposit of $0 to verify the account before sending the actual refund. This can delay things by 1-3 business days. If your DDD was 4/12 (Friday), today is only the first business day after. I'd wait until at least Wednesday before getting too worried.

-

Miguel Diaz

I didn't know about the test deposit, that's interesting! Thanks for the info, I'll try to be patient a bit longer.

OMG I just went through this exact same thing last week!!! My DDD was 4/5 and I didn't get it until 4/9. I bank with SoFi which also advertises early deposits. When I called the IRS (took me forever to get through btw) they said the money had been sent but banks can sometimes hold tax refunds for a few days for verification. If you really need to know what's happening, try using Claimyr.com to actually get through to an IRS agent - they'll tell you exactly where your money is in the system.

Not to cause alarm, but check if your refund was offset for any reason. Sometimes if you owe back taxes, student loans, child support, etc. they can take part or all of your refund. This happened to me last year and the WMR still showed a deposit date but the amount was reduced. You can call the Treasury Offset Program at 800-304-3107 to check if any of your refund was taken.

-

I don't think I have any offsets, but that's good info to have. I'll check into it if the deposit doesn't show up soon. Thanks!

Weird question but did you file yourself or use a tax preparer? Some tax prep services (like H&R Block, TurboTax etc) have your refund go to them first, then they take out their fees and forward the rest to you. This adds an extra step that can delay things by 1-2 days.

0 coins

-

Miguel Diaz

I filed with TurboTax but selected the option for direct deposit to my account, not the refund advance or anything like that. But maybe there's still some processing on their end? Not sure.

Check your TurboTax account - even with direct deposit selected, if you chose to pay their fee from your refund (rather than upfront), they still route it through a temporary account first. This could explain the delay.

Those WMR 'deposit dates' are more like suggestions from the IRS these days 😂 Mine was 5 days late last year. One trick that sometimes works - check your IRS transcript rather than WMR. The transcript is updated more frequently and will show if there are any issues WMR isn't showing. You can access it through the IRS website with an account.

Have you tried the IRS2Go app? Sometimes it updates before the website. Also check that your bank didn't change routing numbers recently - Varo did change some of their routing numbers last year and that caused issues for some people.

0 coins

-

Miguel Diaz

I have the app and it shows the same info. And I double-checked my routing number - it's the same one I've been using. Good suggestions though!

If it makes you feel better, I'm having the same issue but with Cash App. DDD was 4/12 and still nothing. I think it's an IRS problem, not a bank problem. The system is just overwhelmed right now.
