Anyone from Illinois with Direct Deposit Date 3/19 received their tax refund through Varo Bank yet?

Just wondering if anyone here from Illinois who had a direct deposit date of March 19th has received their tax refund through Varo Bank yet? I filed on February 12th, got accepted same day, and my WMR tool has been showing the March 19th deposit date for over a week now. It's March 20th already and still nothing in my account. Starting to get a little worried since I need this money for some bills. Has anyone else with Varo gotten theirs yet? How long does it usually take after the DDD?

Amina Diallo

I'm not in Illinois, but I'm in Wisconsin with a 3/19 DDD through Varo as well. Nothing yet for me either. I've noticed that sometimes Varo takes an extra day or two compared to other banks. I'd wait until tomorrow before getting too concerned. If it doesn't hit by Friday, then I'd start looking into it more. The IRS says to allow up to 5 business days after the DDD before contacting them about missing direct deposits.

Thanks for the input! Makes me feel a bit better knowing I'm not the only one waiting. I'll try to be patient until Friday then.

Yeah Varo is always slow for me too. I got my DDD for 3/19 and still waiting with them. My husband got his through Chase already yesterday morning.

Varo customer servvice is worthless too. I called them and they were like "we release funds as soon as we get them" but wouldnt tell me if they had even received it yet šŸ™„

Just wanted to share this - if you're trying to figure out what's going on with your refund, I found this tool called taxr.ai that completely changed the game for me. Instead of staring at my transcript trying to decode all those crazy codes and dates, it literally explained everything that was happening with my return. Way better than trying to piece together info from random posts like this (no offense). It showed me exactly why my refund was delayed and when I could expect it. I used it last week and it was spot on with the timing. Check it out if you're confused: https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

Omg it does SO much more! I was skeptical at first but it analyzes your entire transcript and explains every code, every date, and predicts when you'll get paid. It also showed me why my return was taking longer than expected (had to do with some education credit verification). Seriously saved me hours of stress and googling random IRS codes. Best thing ever for tax season!

It's the best money I've ever spent considering how much stress it saved me! I was about to have a breakdown trying to figure out my transcript and WMR status before using it. Would 100% recommend for the peace of mind alone. I'll never go back to decoding that stuff myself!

After waiting 2 weeks past my DDD and getting nowhere with the Where's My Refund tool, I finally found a way to speak with an actual human at the IRS using claimyr.com. Got through to an agent in like 20 minutes instead of spending hours on hold or getting disconnected. The agent saw that my refund had been sent but there was an issue with my bank info. They were able to fix it right away and my money hit my account 2 days later. Talking to an actual person solved my problem so quickly - definitely worth trying if you're still stuck by Friday.

hold up, is this for real? I've been trying to get through to someone at the IRS for like 3 weeks straight

100% real. I was super hesitant too but after my 5th attempt trying to call them directly and spending 2+ hours on hold just to get disconnected, I was desperate. It was the only way I could actually talk to a live agent. They called me back when it was my turn in line so I didn't have to stay on hold forever.

I've heard of this but thought it was a scam. How does it work exactly? Do they just call for you?

Basically they navigate the IRS phone tree for you and hold your place in line. Then when they get to an agent, you get a call connecting you directly. Talking to the agent got my refund released so fast - would have been stuck in limbo for who knows how long otherwise.

This might be what I need if I don't see anything by Friday. Thanks for the tip!

I got my DDD 3/19 refund this morning through Varo. I'm in Michigan tho, not Illinois. Filed and accepted February 15th. Sometimes Varo does take an extra day or two compared to the big banks. They always blame it on the IRS for not sending it, and the IRS blames the bank for not posting it... typical finger pointing. šŸ™„

Have you checked your transcript? Might give you more info than WMR. Log into irs.gov and look at your account transcript for 2023. It'll show if it's actually been sent out or if there's any holds.

I tried but I keep getting an error when I try to access my transcript online. Something about not being able to verify my identity.

Try taxr.ai - it helps read those transcripts and explains everything on them. Made a huge difference for me when I was in your exact situation last month. https://taxr.ai

The IRS transcript system is such garbage. I had to request mine by mail because the online system wouldn't verify me either. Took 10 days to arrive smh

I'm in Illinois with Varo and same DDD (3/19). Got mine around 11am today. Check ur account again, might be there now. Sometimes they batch process during the day.

Just checked again and still nothing šŸ˜• I'll keep an eye on it though. Thanks for letting me know!

The IRS is such a joke. They tell us to file early, then make us wait forever anyway. I filed in January and didn't get my refund until March last year. The whole system is broken.

Preach! šŸ™Œ I filed Feb 1 and they're saying I won't get it until April. Meanwhile they'd be charging me interest and penalties if I owed them! Double standard much?

Sometimes it depends on what credits you claimed too. If you have Earned Income Credit or Child Tax Credit they sometimes hold those a bit longer for verification even after giving you a DDD. Did you claim either of those?

CosmicCowboy

Yeah I claimed EIC. That might explain the delay then. Thanks for mentioning that.

Tip from somone who works at a bank (not Varo): direct deposits can come in anytime during the day, not just in the morning. Some banks batch process multiple times per day, others only once. Also, the "business day" for banks often ends around 3-5pm for processing purposes. So a deposit that arrives at 5:30pm might not show until the next day. Hang in there!

I had this exact issue and finally figured out what was wrong by getting someone on the phone through claimyr.com. Turns out there was a weird routing number issue with Varo that was causing the delay. The IRS agent had to manually correct something and then my deposit went through 48 hours later. Talking to a real human at the IRS was the only thing that fixed it for me.

Did u make sure to check that Varo didnt reject the deposit? Some online banks are weird about tax refunds and will sometimes reject them if the name isnt an exact match. Like if your tax return says John A Smith but your bank account is under John Smith, some banks can be picky about that.

I didn't even think about that possibility. I'll contact Varo customer service tomorrow to check. Thanks for the suggestion!

Not a Varo user, but just came here to say I'm in the same boat with my 3/19 DDD at a local credit union in Ohio. The wait is unbearable when you're counting on that money. Hope we all get our funds soon! šŸ¤ž

For what its worth, I've had 2 DDDs in the past not show up on time. One was delayed by 4 days and another by 7 days, with no explanation from either the IRS or my bank. Both eventually arrived without me having to do anything. The tax system is just slow and inefficient sometimes.

That's actually really reassuring, thank you. I'll try to be patient.

Same experience here. Had a 2/28 DDD last year and didn't actually get it until 3/7. No explanation, it just showed up. The IRS moves in mysterious ways šŸ˜‚

CHECK YOUR TRANSCRIPTS! Can't stress this enough. WMR is notoriously unreliable. Your transcript will show the actual status and any holds or reviews. I wasted two weeks staring at WMR before discovering my transcript showed my refund was under review.

This ā¬†ļø WMR is always behind the actual status. Transcripts are the way to go.

But those transcripts might as well be written in ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics šŸ¤£ I had no idea what all those codes meant until I found taxr.ai which explained it all to me in plain English. Total game changer.

If it makes you feel any better, I'm in the exact same situation but with Current Bank instead of Varo. 3/19 DDD, still nothing as of this morning (3/20). Called Current and they said they haven't even received it from the IRS yet. So frustrating!

Has anyone else noticed that the deposit times have been getting worse every year? I used to get my refund within a week of filing back in like 2015. Now it takes 6+ weeks even when there are no issues. The whole system needs an overhaul.

IRS is understaffed and using computers from the stone age. They're literally still running some systems on code from the 1960s. No wonder everything is so slow.
