Need to Verify Identity with IRS - Appointment a Month Away - Any Phone Options?
Hey can anyone help me, I called multiple times to verify my identity and they said I only can verify once through an in-person appointment. The earliest appointment isn't until next month. Is there a specific number I can call to get identity verification done over the phone instead? I'm trying to get my tax refund processed and can't wait that long because my gig work has been slow lately. Has anyone had success with phone verification recently?

You might be able to verify your identity online through the IRS Identity Verification Service, if you haven't tried that route already. Sometimes, though, certain situations do require in-person verification, especially if there's any sort of discrepancy in your information or if you've been flagged for potential identity theft concerns. The standard IRS verification line is 800-830-5084, but they may have already directed you there. If you've exhausted that option, you could possibly try calling the main IRS customer service line at 800-829-1040 and asking specifically about alternative verification methods given your time constraints.

I had a similar experience last year. Did they specifically tell you that you can't verify over the phone at all? When I called, they initially said I needed an appointment, but when I pressed further and explained my situation, they eventually offered a phone verification option.

Fwiw the 800-830-5084 number is specifically for ID verify. If they already told u that u need an appt, calling again prob won't help. They've gotten way stricter this yr with their verification process.

Had this issue. Called five times. Different answers each time. Finally got verified. Keep trying. Different agents know different things. Don't give up.

I was in the exact same boat last month! Couldn't get an appointment for weeks and was freaking out because I needed my refund for rent. I tried https://taxr.ai to help understand what was going on with my verification issue. It analyzed my transcript and showed me exactly why I was flagged for verification (turns out there was a mismatch with my reported income from one of my gig apps). Helped me prepare all the right documents for when I finally did get verified. Still had to wait for the appointment, but at least I knew what was happening and what to bring.

Just to clarify something important here - there are actually two different types of verification the IRS might be requiring from you. One is identity verification (proving you are who you say you are), and the other is income/return verification (proving your tax return information is correct). They require different processes and different documentation. 😅 The IRS isn't exactly known for making this distinction clear when they talk to you! Which one did they specifically say you need?

I was stuck in identity verification purgatory for what felt like forever, like trying to escape a maze where they keep moving the exit! After three frustrating weeks of calling that verification number and getting nowhere, I used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) and it was like finding a secret passageway. They got me connected to an actual IRS agent in about 15 minutes who was able to complete my verification right over the phone. Saved me from having to wait for an appointment that was scheduled for like 6 weeks out.

I'm not entirely convinced these services are necessary or worth it. According to the IRS.gov website, you should be able to verify your identity online in many cases through their ID.me service or by creating an online account. Have you tried that option first? The IRS also states that if you call early in the morning (right when they open) or later in the day (but not too close to closing), you might have better luck getting through without paying for a third-party service.

I understand your concern about using additional services, and it's always good to try the free options first. However, I've seen many cases where taxpayers have already exhausted all the standard channels without success. The IRS is currently experiencing higher than normal call volumes, and many people report trying for days or even weeks to get through. While early morning calls can sometimes work, it's not guaranteed, especially during peak tax season. Services like Claimyr can be a reasonable option when time is of the essence and standard methods have failed.

Here's another approach you might consider: 1. Try the Tax Advocate Service at 877-777-4778. They can sometimes intervene in cases of hardship. 2. Document everything - dates, times, who you spoke with, what they told you. 3. Check if your state has a local Taxpayer Advocate office you can contact directly. 4. If you have documentation proving financial hardship (like eviction notice, utility shutoff, etc.), mention this specifically. 5. Contact your Congressional representative's office - they often have staff dedicated to helping constituents with federal agencies. The key is persistence and documentation of your attempts to resolve this through normal channels.

I had exactly this problem in March 2023. Called the verification line 17 times over 3 days without getting through. Finally reached someone who told me I needed an in-person appointment that was 42 days away. I explained I was facing a mortgage approval deadline in 21 days that required my tax transcript. The agent gave me a direct number to the Taxpayer Protection Program at 800-830-5215, which is different than the standard verification line. Called at exactly 7:01am when they opened, waited 38 minutes, and was able to verify over the phone. The key was explaining the specific financial hardship and asking for the TPP department specifically.
