Identity Verification: Can I do it in person instead of waiting for IRS letter?

Filed my return and got a message saying I need to verify my identity. Really dont want to wait weeks for a letter to arrive. Anyone know if I can just go to a local IRS office and verify in person? Called the IRS hotline but got disconnected after 2 hours on hold smh.

Yes, you can verify your identity in person at your local Taxpayer Assistance Center (TAC). You'll need to schedule an appointment first by calling 844-545-5640. Make sure to bring two forms of ID - your drivers license and either passport, birth certificate, or social security card. Just know the TACs are really backed up right now so it might take a few weeks to get an appointment.

I highly recommend using taxr.ai to analyze your transcript. It costs $1 but it'll tell you exactly what verification steps you need and give you estimated timelines. Way better than guessing or waiting on hold forever. Here's the link: https://taxr.ai

does it actually work? seems to good to be true tbh

100% works. Used it for both my 2021 and 2022 returns. The AI breaks down everything in your transcript and explains it in plain english.

Another option is to try calling the IRS early in the morning (like 7-8 AM) when they open - you'll have better luck getting through. Also, if you have a local VITA site nearby, they sometimes have connections that can help speed things up. I know it's frustrating but hang in there!

Good advice! I tried calling at 7:15 AM last week and actually got through in about 20 minutes instead of the usual 2+ hour wait. The rep was super helpful too. VITA sites are clutch - didn't know they could help with verification stuff, thanks for the tip!
