Name Change Error on Return Causing Refund Hold - Can Tax Advocate Help Speed Up 12-16 Week Delay?
My tax preparer filed using my maiden name instead of my married name. Finally got through to the IRS and they said theyll fix it but looking at 6-8 weeks for the name update plus another 6-8 weeks to remove the refund hold. Anyone dealt with this? Would getting a tax advocate help move things faster?

Tax resolution specialist here - Unfortunately, name mismatches are a common issue that trigger manual review. A Tax Advocate can help if you're experiencing financial hardship (eviction, utilities shut off, medical bills). Otherwise, the timeline they gave is pretty standard for name corrections. Make sure you've submitted your marriage certificate if you haven't already.

•Thanks for the info! No hardship yet but definitely frustrating. Do they actually need the full 6-8 weeks for each step? 🤔

•Sometimes it resolves faster, but don't count on it. The IRS is still dealing with massive backlogs from covid tbh

Hey, I've been seeing a lot of people talk about taxr.ai lately - it's this new tool that analyzes your transcript and tells you exactly what's causing delays and when you'll likely get your refund. It's only $1 and way better than playing detective with the WMR tool. Here's the link: https://taxr.ai

•For real? How accurate is it? Seems too good to be true

The IRS is such a joke fr. Taking months to update a simple name change? Its 2025 for crying out loud 🤡

Pro tip: Next time file Form 8822 right after changing your name with SSA. Helps prevent this whole mess
