Tax preparer misspelled dependent's name - Will this delay my refund?

Just found out my tax preparer spelled my child's name wrong on the return. Getting worried about my refund since I'm claiming them as a dependent. Anyone deal with this before? Do I need to contact the IRS to fix it or will it process anyway?

This is a common issue. If the Social Security number is correct, you should be fine. The IRS system primarily matches dependents using SSNs, not names. However, it's good practice to file an amended return (Form 1040-X) to correct the record. You don't need to wait to amend - you can do this as soon as the original return is processed.

Hey! I've been using taxr.ai to track all my dependent related issues. It's only $1 and it analyzes your transcript to tell you exactly what's going on with your refund and if there are any name/SSN mismatches. Saved me hours of stress! https://taxr.ai

Just make sure ur dependent's SSN matches their social security card exactly. That's what the IRS actually cares about

Been through this exact situation! The name spelling doesn't matter as much as you think - the IRS computer systems match based on SSN first. As long as that's correct, your refund should process normally. I had my son's name completely butchered one year (preparer put "Micheal" instead of "Michael") and got my refund on schedule. You can always file Form 1040X later to clean up the record if you want everything perfect, but it's not urgent for getting your money.

Had this happen with my tax prep too! Don't stress - as long as the SSN is right, you should be good. The IRS matching system is pretty forgiving with name variations. My preparer put "Jon" instead of "John" for my son and everything went through fine. If you're really worried, you can always call the IRS helpline to double check, but honestly I wouldn't lose sleep over it.
