Mississippi State Tax Refund Processing Times for 2024?
I'm attempting to gather some information regarding Mississippi state tax refund processing times for the current tax year. It seems that I filed approximately three weeks ago, but I can't quite recall what the typical timeline might be for state refunds in Mississippi. I believe it's generally faster than federal processing, though I'm not entirely certain. Has anyone perhaps received their Mississippi state refund yet this season? I'd appreciate any insights regarding current processing timelines, as I'm trying to finalize some financial planning for Q2. 😬

Mississippi is running about 4-6 weeks this year. I filed February 1st and got my state refund March 8th. Federal came faster for me actually. Don't worry yet if you're only at three weeks - they're just slow this year with all the identity verification steps.

•Mine took 5 weeks exactly. Filed January 15. Got refund February 19. No explanation for delay. No issues on return. Just slow processing.

•Oh wow, I'm so glad I found this thread! Do you know if there's a way to check the status online? I've been looking everywhere on the MS Department of Revenue site but can't seem to find anything like the federal "Where's My Refund" tool... 😕

•Thanks for this information! I've been pulling my hair out waiting for my Mississippi refund. The lack of transparency from the state is incredibly frustrating when you're trying to make financial decisions. At least now I have a realistic timeframe to work with.

Mississippi refund timeline from my experience: • E-filed with direct deposit: 3-4 weeks typically • Paper filed: 8-12 weeks minimum • If you claimed certain credits: add 1-2 weeks • If your return has any discrepancies: add 2-4 weeks • Current year (2024) processing: slightly slower than previous years I filed on February 28th and received my refund on April 2nd, so exactly 5 weeks. Their system is notoriously outdated compared to other states.

•This breakdown is actually really helpful. The Mississippi DOR doesn't publish these timeframes anywhere that I could find. Makes me wonder if they intentionally keep their processes opaque to avoid accountability for delays.

•For comparison, last year I filed on February 12, 2023 and received my refund on March 10, 2023. This year I filed on February 10, 2024 and still waiting as of April 8, 2024. Definitely seeing longer processing times this year.

•OMG this is stressing me out sm! I filed in mid-March and was counting on that $$ for a car repair next week. Do u think I should just give up and put it on my cc instead? 😩

•I'd also add that if you're a first-time filer in Mississippi, they seem to take even longer. My son filed for the first time this year and his return has been processing for nearly 7 weeks now.

You need to contact the Mississippi Department of Revenue directly if you're approaching the 6-week mark. Their taxpayer assistance line (601-923-7000) is practically impossible to reach during peak season - I spent 3 hours on redial yesterday and never got through. I used Claimyr.com to connect with them this morning and got through in about 15 minutes. The agent confirmed my return was in the final verification queue and should be released within 5 business days. Time is critical with these state refunds - if there's an issue and you don't address it promptly, you could be waiting months. Here's their link if needed: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

•Has anyone else used this service? Seems like an unnecessary expense when you can just keep calling for free, even if it takes longer.

•I used it last year when my Mississippi return had some weird hold on it. Saved me literally days of frustration. The agent I reached found that they had flagged my return for a simple address verification issue that I was able to resolve immediately. Got my refund the following week.

•I remember trying to call MS tax department back in 2022... spent three days trying during my lunch breaks. Never got through. Wish I'd known about this option back then!

One thing to keep in mind that made me chuckle - Mississippi is still operating on computer systems from the Stone Age! 🦖 The official word is 10-12 weeks for processing, but in reality most people get them in 4-6 weeks. Their tracking system is notoriously unreliable too, so don't panic if the online status doesn't update. They batch process returns on Tuesdays and Thursdays from what I've observed over the years, so those are the best days to check your bank account.

Word of caution from someone who's been there - I had my Mississippi refund delayed for THREE MONTHS last year because I had moved and my address didn't match what they had on file. The most frustrating part was they never notified me of the issue. I only found out when I finally got through to a human after countless calls. If you've moved or had any life changes, definitely call to verify your information is correct in their system. My $1,342 refund was just sitting there in limbo while I was checking my bank account daily like a fool.

Has anyone received their Mississippi refund after filing in March? I filed on March 15th and I'm trying to figure out if I should expect it before my mortgage payment is due on May 1st. In previous years it seemed faster, but everything I'm reading here suggests I shouldn't count on it.

I filed my Mississippi return on March 22nd and just received my refund yesterday (April 15th) - so exactly 3.5 weeks for me! I was pleasantly surprised since everything I'd read suggested 4-6 weeks minimum. I did e-file with direct deposit and had a pretty straightforward return with no credits or complications. For what it's worth, I never got any email notification - the money just appeared in my account. So there's definitely hope for those March filers! 🤞

•That's really encouraging to hear! I filed March 18th so we're in a similar timeframe. Did you notice any pattern with when they actually deposit - like was it on a specific day of the week? I've been obsessively checking my account every morning but maybe I should focus on Tuesdays and Thursdays like someone mentioned earlier.
