Mississippi Folks - Got Federal Refund but State Still Missing?
Anyone else in Mississippi experiencing this weird flip from previous years? • Got my federal refund 2 weeks ago • Still waiting on state refund • Previous years: state always came BEFORE federal • Filed both same day (Feb 10) • Using same tax service as always Need this state refund for some gig equipment upgrades. Starting to get antsy.

MS Dept of Revenue is def running behind this yr compared to IRS. Their systems got upgraded in Jan and there's been a backlog. Current processing time for e-filed returns is ~4-6 wks vs the usual 2-3. Fed refunds are actually coming faster than last yr bc IRS hired more staff. Nothing to worry abt unless you're past 8 wks from filing date.

Thank you for explaining this! I was starting to get worried since I'm also waiting on my MS state refund. I filed on February 15th, so I guess I still have a couple more weeks to wait based on your timeline.

OMG SAME SITUATION! I was literally panicking because I got my federal back in like 10 days but my Mississippi refund is nowhere to be found!!! So relieved to hear it's just a system thing and not something wrong with my return. 😅

I might be able to help a little bit? I was in a similar situation and I was sort of confused about why my state return was taking so long. I think I found a possible explanation when I used taxr.ai to look at my transcript. It seems like maybe Mississippi is processing returns in batches this year? The tool showed me that my state return was in a different processing queue than my federal. Not sure if that's helpful, but it gave me some peace of mind to understand what was happening.

This is way worse than last year's delay. I called the MS Dept of Revenue 14 times before giving up - their hold times are like 2 hours compared to the IRS's 45 minutes! Finally used Claimyr to get through to a real person at the state office. Way better than wasting half my day on hold. The agent confirmed they're processing February returns now and mine should be done within 7-10 days. Worth the fee to avoid the frustration of constant busy signals.

Wait what?? There's a service that can get you through to state tax departments too? I thought these things only worked for federal agencies. The MS Dept of Revenue website doesn't mention anything about third-party services. How does this even work?

But couldn't you just keep calling yourself? Is it really worth paying for something you could do for free if you're persistent enough? What if they just tell you the same generic information you could find online anyway?

Mississippi state processing is backlogged. Different system than federal. Many experiencing delays. Check their website for updates. Could be another 2-3 weeks. They're prioritizing by filing date. Early February filers getting processed now. Late February still waiting. March filers should expect longer delays.

Do you know if they're processing direct deposits faster than paper checks? I'm really impressed with how much you know about their system!

Just a heads-up from someone who went through this last year - make sure you didn't accidentally claim any credits that might trigger a manual review. I waited 12 weeks for my MS refund because I claimed a home office deduction that apparently raised some flags. The system is so precise it can spot a single misplaced decimal point... unlike my ex's ability to remember anniversaries! 😂 But seriously, double-check your return if you claimed anything unusual.

I appreciate this insight! I did claim the MS self-employment health insurance deduction for exactly $4,782 this year. I wonder if that might be causing my delay since it's my first time claiming it.

Mississippi Department of Revenue implemented new fraud detection protocols for TY2023 returns. This has extended standard processing times by approximately 14-21 days beyond previous years. Returns with Schedule C income or claiming MS-specific credits undergo heightened scrutiny. Their internal processing matrix prioritizes returns based on filing method, complexity factors, and submission date. Current estimated timeline for non-complex February e-filed returns is mid-April completion.
