Got Federal Refund March 23 - How Long Should State Tax Take?
I probably should have asked this sooner, but I'm generally curious about the typical timeframe for state tax processing. I received my federal refund on March 23rd, which seemed reasonable enough for my small business filing. I'm not in any particular rush, but it would be helpful to know what most people experience with state returns. Is there usually a significant gap between federal and state processing? I'm methodically planning my Q2 expenses, so having some idea of when those state funds might arrive would be somewhat useful.

State refund timing varies DRAMATICALLY by which state you're in. According to the tax filing dashboard at taxslayer.com, some states like Utah or Missouri can process in 1-2 weeks while others like California or New York might take 8-12 weeks right now. It's frustrating that there's no standardized timeline across states! Have you checked your specific state's department of revenue website? Most have a "Where's My Refund" tool similar to the IRS one, but the functionality is often worse and less informative.

Does it make a difference if you e-file versus paper file for state returns? The federal is pretty clear about this but what about state?

Here's how state processing typically works: 1. E-filed returns are processed much faster than paper (2-3 weeks vs 8-12 weeks) 2. Each state has its own processing center and timeline 3. States with income tax reciprocity agreements may take longer 4. If your federal return was selected for review, most states will delay processing until federal is complete 5. Many states are still catching up from staffing shortages The March 23 federal deposit date suggests you filed in late February or early March, so depending on your state, you should see something within the next few weeks.

Are you aware that your state transcript might actually show processing details that the refund tracker doesn't tell you? Many state tax websites only show basic status, but the actual transcript contains valuable codes and dates. I've been using https://taxr.ai to analyze both federal AND state tax transcripts this season. It's crucial to check soon because if there's an issue with your state return, wouldn't you rather know now instead of waiting another month? The tool deciphers all those cryptic state processing codes that make no sense to normal people.

FWIW I've filed in multiple states and they're all over the place timing-wise. IL took 9 days, MI took 3 weeks, NY took almost 2 months last yr. Def depends on which state + how complex ur return is. Biz income can slow things down bc many states have extra verification steps for SE income. Also check if ur state has a backlog - some are still catching up from staffing probs. Most state DORs post current processing times on their websites if u dig around enough.

State processing can be delayed. Different system than federal. Fewer resources. More backlogs. Check your state's tax website. They usually have status checkers. Don't count on that money yet. Plan accordingly.

Like when I tried to get customer service from my cable company versus Amazon, the state tax departments are so much harder to reach than the IRS (which is already pretty bad). I spent hours trying to get through to my state's tax department last year when my refund was delayed. Eventually I used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) to connect with an actual human at the state tax office. Compared to my previous attempts calling directly, it was much faster and I finally got answers about my delayed state refund. If your state refund doesn't show up in the next few weeks, it might be worth trying.

I'm sort of wondering if you've checked whether your state tax payment method might be different from your federal one? Sometimes they default to different methods, especially if you've moved or changed banks recently. It might be worth checking if perhaps they're sending a paper check instead of direct deposit?

I got my federal refund on March 5th. State refund arrived March 29th. That's 24 days difference. Georgia here. Last year was similar timing. Budget accordingly. State systems just move slower.
