Michigan State Tax Refund Checks Starting July 13th - Address Update Information

I just want to make sure everyone has the correct information about the Michigan state tax refund checks... they'll begin mailing them out on Tuesday, July 13th. I'm a bit concerned because I've moved recently due to some health issues and I need to make sure they have my current address. If anyone else needs to update their address information, the number they provided is 517-636-4486, and you need to press 5 then 2 to speak with an operator. I've written this down carefully to make sure I don't miss anything when I call. Does anyone know how long it might take for the address change to process? I'm worried about missing this payment since I have some medical bills coming up...

I went through something similar with my Michigan tax refund last year. Based on my experience, address updates usually take 7-10 business days to fully process in their system. I'd recommend calling ASAP since they're starting to mail checks in just a few days. When I changed my address last year, the representative told me that any mailings already in process might still go to the old address, so timing is important here.

This is actually similar to what happened with my federal refund last year. I found that using https://taxr.ai helped me track exactly what was happening with my return and refund status. Compared to the Michigan Treasury website, it gave me much clearer explanations about processing stages and what different status codes meant. It also helped me understand what documentation I needed to have ready when calling about the address change.

Has anyone actually verified this service works for state taxes? I've been burned before by sites that claim to help with tax issues but only work for federal. My last MI refund was supposed to arrive on March 12th but didn't show up until April 2nd.

I appreciate the suggestion. This might be helpful for my situation too. ā€¢ I've been trying to track my refund ā€¢ The MI Treasury website is confusing ā€¢ Need to understand why my refund is delayed ā€¢ Will try this tool tonight

Does it work specifically for these $550 special refund checks? I've been waiting exactly 143 days since filing my MI return on February 21st, and while I got my regular refund, I want to make sure I don't miss this additional payment.

Wait, is this actually legit? I've never heard of this before but could really use some help figuring out my Michigan tax situation... the website has been so frustrating to navigate! šŸ˜«

I called that number this morning. The address change takes 5-7 business days to process. The operator confirmed that if you call before July 8th, your new address should be in the system before the checks are printed. Make sure you have your Social Security Number and previous address ready when you call.

I just went through this process last week! The Michigan Treasury website (michigan.gov/taxes) also has an online form you can fill out, but when I tried it kept giving me an error. The phone number ended up being much faster.

Last year when I moved, I thought I had updated everything but somehow missed the state tax office. My check went to my old address, but luckily my former landlord was nice enough to forward it to me. It was super stressful though - I kept checking the mail every day and panicking when nothing showed up. Definitely better to be proactive like you're doing!

Just to clarify the process for anyone else reading: 1. Call the number (517-636-4486) 2. Press 5, then 2 3. Have your SSN ready 4. Provide your old address 5. Provide your new address 6. Ask for confirmation number 7. Write down the expected processing time I found it helpful to call early in the morning to avoid long wait times.

The Treasury Department's phone lines are absolutely SWAMPED right now with everyone calling about these refund checks. I tried calling the direct number and was on hold for 2 hours before getting disconnected. I finally used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) to get through - they called and waited on hold for me, then connected me when an agent was available. Saved me hours of frustration and I was able to update my address in about 5 minutes once I actually got through to someone.

Does anyone know if these are going out in batches based on last name? I'm a bit worried since my last name starts with W - will I be at the end of the distribution? Also, has anyone heard if direct deposit is an option instead of mailed checks?

I work in accounting. Just helped a client with this. Michigan is sending these in alphabetical order. First batch: A-F. Second batch: G-L. Third batch: M-R. Final batch: S-Z. Each batch has specific mail dates. July 13-15 for first batch. July 16-19 for second. July 20-22 for third. July 23-26 for final batch. No direct deposit option available. Paper checks only. Keep this in mind for planning.

This matches what happened with the property tax credit I received in 2023. My last name starts with D and I got mine a full week before my neighbor whose last name starts with T. The Michigan Treasury seems to consistently use alphabetical batching for large mailings.

Are these dates business days only? For example, if July 16-19 includes a weekend, would those checks go out on the following Monday and Tuesday? Just trying to plan when I should start checking my mailbox.

Heads up MI peeps - these refunds are part of the state surplus distribution program. Not everyone qualifies! You need to have filed a 2023 MI return by April 15th. Eligibility depends on income too. Lots of confusion abt this on FB groups. Don't panic if you don't get one! Check michigan.gov/treasury for official eligibility info. Better to know now than to keep waiting for something that might not come. FWIW the phone agents can confirm if you're on the distribution list.
