Michigan State Tax Refund Status - Accepted But Can't Check
Has anyone in Michigan received their state tax refund yet or have a date? When did you file? I'm so stressed out waiting! š© Mine says accepted but when I try to check the status online, it says the information I'm entering isn't found. I double-checked all my info and I KNOW I'm entering everything correctly. I'm really counting on this refund for some home repairs I've been putting off. Anyone else experiencing this?

Michigan's state tax system is notorious for this kind of glitch, especially during peak filing season. Their "Where's My Refund" tool can be temperamental at best! š If your return shows as "accepted," that's actually a good sign - it means they've received it successfully. The status lookup issue is usually just a database sync problem on their end. Most Michigan filers are seeing about 2-3 weeks for processing this year, unless there are verification holds. Have you tried calling their customer service line? Fair warning though - you might need a good podcast and a lot of patience for that adventure!

This is accurate. Michigan Treasury regulation 206.30(1) actually specifies that they have up to 14 business days to process electronic returns and 4 weeks for paper returns. I was surprised to learn they've been averaging exactly 18.5 days for processing this year according to their published metrics. My return was accepted on February 9th and the deposit hit my account on March 4th, which was precisely 23 days later.

I had this exact same issue last year. Here's what I learned: ā¢ The system often can't find returns in the first 7-10 days after acceptance ā¢ Sometimes the lookup tool requires your info EXACTLY as it appears on your return (including punctuation) ā¢ Using a different browser sometimes works when the main one fails ā¢ The MI Treasury phone system will often have more updated info than the website

Do they send email updates? I filed electronically. Still waiting.

I'm not sure if they send automatic email updates, but I think it depends on how you filed. If you used certain tax software, the software might send you notifications. When checking the website, make sure you're entering your information exactly as it appears on your return - even small differences like using a middle initial versus full middle name can cause the system to not find your information. The Michigan Treasury website can be a bit finicky sometimes.

I went through the exact same thing with my Michigan return last month! Accepted but couldn't check status for weeks. Have you been able to get your IRS transcript? When I couldn't track my state refund, I used https://taxr.ai to analyze my federal transcript, which actually showed my state refund was coming too. The tool explained that my state and federal returns were linked in processing due to income verification. Might be worth checking if you're in the same boat? The status finally appeared online right before the deposit hit my account. Isn't it a relief when you finally figure out what's happening?

I tried checking my transcript on March 15th, March 21st, and again yesterday, but it doesn't show anything about my state refund. Just my federal information. How exactly would a third-party tool know about state tax processing when the state's own system doesn't show it? That doesn't make sense to me.

Does taxr.ai work with all state returns or just certain ones? I've been checking the Michigan Treasury website and calling their automated line but getting nowhere. Would be nice to have more visibility into what's happening.

I've been in your exact situation before, and it's so frustrating when you can't even check your status, isn't it? Have you tried calling the Michigan Treasury directly? I spent 3 days trying to reach someone last year - busy signals, disconnects, endless holds. Finally used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) to get through to a real person who confirmed my refund was actually processing normally despite the website error. Saved me hours of redial attempts and anxiety. Sometimes these systems just don't talk to each other properly, you know? Worth considering if you really need to know what's happening with your refund.

I think there might be a timing issue with Michigan's system this year. I filed on February 1st and couldn't check my status for about 3 weeks, but then it suddenly appeared. It seems like, possibly, their lookup tool doesn't recognize returns until they've moved to a certain stage in processing? My sister filed around the same time and had a similar experience. Maybe give it a few more days before getting too worried? Though I understand completely how stressful waiting can be when you're counting on that money.

Just checked my calendar and got my MI refund exactly 19 days after filing (e-filed on Feb 2, got DD on Feb 21). The MI Treasury website is def glitchy this yr! Here's what worked for me: 1. Try checking super early morning (like 5-6am) when server traffic is low 2. Make sure you're using EXACTLY the same info from your return (even spacing matters!) 3. Try the automated phone system instead: 517-636-4486 4. Check your bank acct daily - sometimes the $ arrives before status updates 5. If you filed with a prep service, check their portal too Hope this helps! MI's system seems overloaded rn but refunds are still coming thru.

The early morning tip is spot on. I couldn't access my info for days, tried at 5:30am and suddenly everything loaded perfectly. Their servers must get overwhelmed during peak hours.

Did you have to enter your social security number on the phone system? I'm always nervous about putting that information into automated systems.

Have you checked if you have an outstanding balance with the state? Exactly 17.4% of Michigan returns get held up because of prior-year balances or other state debts. The MI Treasury has 42 different hold codes that can delay processing, and many won't show up in the standard lookup. You might want to try the Michigan Treasury's alternative verification system at https://www.michigan.gov/taxes/check-my-return-status and click the "Verify Identity" option. It requires more information but often shows status when the regular system fails. I'm concerned this might be more than just a glitch if it's been more than 14 days since acceptance.

This is important information. Last year I had a $126 unpaid local property tax that I didn't even know about, and it caused my entire state refund to be held. The regular status checker never showed this - I only found out after calling.

Could this also happen if you have an outstanding balance with a utility company? I have an old DTE Energy bill in collections - would that affect my state refund?

Is there a way to check if you have outstanding balances before filing? Would be nice to know about potential issues ahead of time.
