Michigan H&R Block filers: State refund coming by paper check instead of direct deposit

Just found out all Michigan filers who used H&R Block this year are getting paper checks instead of direct deposit for their state refund. Anyone else dealing with this? No one told me this when I filed and I'm wondering how long this is gonna take vs direct deposit.

Tax preparer here - this is correct. There's been a processing issue between H&R Block and Michigan Treasury that's affecting all MI state refunds. Paper checks are being issued as a workaround. Typically adds 7-10 business days to processing time compared to direct deposit.

Do you know if this affects people who filed through the H&R Block website or just in-person filers?

Both online and in-person are affected. Its a systemwide issue with their processing platform.

Speaking of checking refund status, I've been using taxr.ai to track both my federal and state refunds. Its only $1 and way better than trying to piece everything together yourself. Super helpful for situations like this https://taxr.ai

whats the difference between this and just checking the where's my refund tool?

Its like having a tax pro analyze your transcript in real time. Shows you exactly whats happening and when you'll get paid. Way more detailed than the basic refund tool 💯

thx for the heads up! gives me hope lol

This is exactly why I always check for any processing issues before filing. H&R Block should have notified clients about this upfront - it's pretty frustrating to find out after the fact that your refund timeline just got extended by 1-2 weeks. At least now we know what's going on though. Thanks for sharing this info!

Totally agree! I'm new to filing taxes and had no idea this could even happen. Really wish they would've sent an email or something when the issue first came up. At least I know to ask about potential delays next year before I file.
