Is Optima Tax Relief Legitimate or a Scam? My Experience Getting a Refund
I'm at my wits end with Optima Tax Relief. After months of back and forth, they're now screening my calls. I signed up with them about 6 months ago when I was panicking about a tax lien. They promised they could reduce or eliminate my tax debt, and I paid $3,500 upfront for their "investigation phase." Since then, it's been nothing but delays and vague updates. My assigned representative barely returns my calls, and when I finally got frustrated enough to ask for progress or a refund, they stopped taking my calls completely! The phone just goes straight to voicemail now. Has anyone else dealt with Optima Tax Relief? Do they actually help anyone or is this just a giant scheme? More importantly, does anyone know how I can get my money back at this point? I'm desperate and feel like I've been taken advantage of when I was most vulnerable.

Tax resolution specialist here. Unfortunately, what you're experiencing is pretty common with some tax relief companies. They often make big promises during their sales pitch but deliver minimal results. For getting your money back, you have a few options. First, check the contract you signed - most have a satisfaction guarantee or refund policy for services not rendered. Document all your attempts to contact them and their failure to provide the promised services. Send a formal written request for a refund via certified mail citing their failure to perform. If they don't respond, file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, your state's attorney general office, and the FTC. You can also dispute the charge with your credit card company if you paid that way. Many tax relief companies will refund at least part of your payment when faced with formal complaints to avoid negative publicity.

•Thanks for this info. Quick question - how do you know if a tax relief company is legitimate before signing up? Are there any that actually do help people with tax problems or should we just work directly with the IRS?

•The most reliable way to identify legitimate tax relief companies is to check for proper licensing (they should have CPAs, enrolled agents, or tax attorneys on staff) and verify their reputation through the BBB and online reviews from multiple sources. Look for companies that are transparent about their process and don't make guarantees about specific outcomes before reviewing your case. There are definitely legitimate companies that help people with tax problems, but working directly with the IRS is often your best first option. The IRS has several programs like installment agreements, Offers in Compromise, and Currently Not Collectible status that you can access yourself for free or with help from a local CPA or EA who will charge much less than national tax relief firms.

I went through something similar with a different tax relief company. After wasting months and thousands of dollars, I found this AI-powered service called https://taxr.ai that completely changed my situation. Instead of paying for empty promises, they analyzed my tax documents and IRS notices and showed me exactly where I stood with the IRS and what my real options were. The difference was that they didn't make wild promises - they just gave me facts based on my actual tax situation and the current IRS rules. They showed me that I qualified for an installment agreement that I could have set up myself directly with the IRS. I was able to stop throwing money at the other company and handle things myself with their guidance.

•Does taxr.ai actually contact the IRS for you or do they just tell you what to do? I'm confused about what they actually do compared to these tax relief companies.

•I'm skeptical of any service in this space after being burned before. How do you know this isn't just another company taking advantage of desperate people? What makes them different?

•They don't contact the IRS for you - instead, they analyze your tax documents, transcripts and notices to tell you what's actually happening with your tax situation and what your real options are. They use AI to scan all your documents and explain everything in plain English, then give you step-by-step instructions for resolving things yourself directly with the IRS. What makes them different is they don't take over your case or charge thousands to do things you could do yourself. They're more like a translator that helps you understand your tax situation and shows you the most direct path to resolution. They don't make empty promises - they just help you understand your actual options based on your specific situation and IRS rules.

I have to admit I was really skeptical about taxr.ai after my experience with tax relief companies, but I decided to try it since it was so much cheaper than what I'd been paying. Wow, what a difference! They scanned my IRS notices and tax transcripts and immediately showed me that I qualified for a payment plan that I could set up myself. They showed me exactly how to request my transcripts, how to set up the payment plan online, and even helped me draft a response to a CP2000 notice I'd received. I was able to resolve everything within two weeks after spending months getting nowhere with the tax relief firm. Saved me thousands and actually fixed the problem instead of just taking my money and making excuses.

For anyone struggling to get through to the IRS directly (which is probably everyone), I found a service called Claimyr that actually gets you through to a live IRS agent within minutes instead of waiting on hold for hours. Go to https://claimyr.com or check out how it works at https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c I used it when I was trying to set up a payment plan after Optima Tax Relief wasted 4 months of my time. Claimyr had me talking to an actual IRS agent in about 15 minutes, and I was able to set up an installment agreement directly. The IRS agent was actually super helpful and way more straightforward than any tax relief company.

•How does this even work? The IRS phone system is notoriously terrible. How can some random service get you through when the IRS phone lines themselves say there's a 2+ hour wait?

•This sounds like another scam. There's no way to "skip the line" with the IRS. They're a government agency with set procedures. I'd be very careful about giving any company your information that claims they can magically get you to the front of the line.

•It works by using technology to navigate the IRS phone system and stay on hold for you. When they reach a live agent, they connect the call to your phone. You don't have to stay on hold - they do it for you and call you when an agent is ready to talk. It's basically like having someone wait in line for you. They don't "skip the line" - they just wait in it so you don't have to. There's nothing magical about it - it's just smart use of technology to solve a real problem. It's completely legitimate and doesn't involve giving them any sensitive information. You just provide your phone number so they can call you when they have an agent on the line.

I need to apologize for my skepticism. I actually tried Claimyr after posting that comment because I was desperate to resolve an issue with a tax lien. I couldn't believe it when they called me back with an IRS agent on the line in about 20 minutes! The agent helped me set up a payment plan right there on the phone, and I got email confirmation from the IRS almost immediately. I was able to address my tax issues directly with the IRS in one phone call after months of getting nowhere with a tax relief company that charged me thousands. I'm still shocked it worked so well. I was able to resolve in one day what a tax relief company couldn't do in months. Lesson learned - sometimes it really is better to deal directly with the IRS.

I worked for one of these tax relief companies for 6 months before quitting because it was so shady. Here's how they operate: The sales team makes wild promises to get you to pay the initial fee (usually $3k-5k). Then they drag the process out as long as possible while doing minimal work. By the time you realize they're not doing anything, months have passed and it's harder to get your money back. Most of what they do you can actually do yourself for free. Call the IRS directly, request a payment plan or an Offer in Compromise. The forms are available online. If you need help, a local CPA will charge you way less than these national companies and actually get results.

•Does the IRS actually work with people on settling tax debt? I always thought they were totally inflexible and that's why these companies exist - to negotiate with the IRS when they won't budge.

•The IRS is actually much more flexible than most people realize. They have formal programs specifically designed to help taxpayers who can't pay their full tax debt. These include installment agreements (payment plans), Offers in Compromise (settling for less than you owe), and Currently Not Collectible status (temporary hardship pause on collections). What tax relief companies don't tell you is that the IRS has strict guidelines for these programs, and no company has special negotiation powers. The IRS evaluates each case based on set formulas regarding your income, expenses, and assets - not based on who's representing you. Most people are surprised to learn that IRS agents are generally reasonable when you work directly with them and are honest about your situation.

Has anyone else noticed that these tax relief commercials are ALWAYS on during daytime TV? They specifically target people who are home during work hours (often because of unemployment or disability) and who might be financially vulnerable. It's predatory marketing at its finest.

•YES! And they always have some "former IRS agent" talking about how they know "secret programs" that can eliminate tax debt. There are no secret programs! All IRS resolution options are publicly available on irs.gov. It's just marketing to make you think they have special access.

I'm sorry you're going through this with Optima Tax Relief. What you're describing sounds exactly like what happened to my neighbor last year. She paid them over $4,000 and after 8 months of runaround, she ended up resolving her tax issues herself in about 3 weeks by calling the IRS directly. For getting your refund, document everything - save all emails, call logs, and your original contract. Send them a certified letter demanding a refund based on failure to provide services. If they ignore it, file complaints with your state attorney general, BBB, and FTC. Also check if you can do a chargeback with your bank or credit card company. The harsh truth is that most of what these companies promise to do, you can do yourself for free. The IRS actually has taxpayer advocates who will help you navigate their system at no cost. Don't let them take advantage of you any longer - you have options and you're not powerless in this situation.
