Optima Tax Relief is a complete waste of time and money
Been dealing with Optima Tax Relief for over 14 months and I'm absolutely furious. They market themselves as this amazing tax relief service but I haven't seen ANY relief whatsoever. After making me wait for more than a year, they finally called saying they had a "resolution" for my tax issues. Guess what? Their big solution was basically the same payment plan I could've set up myself directly on the IRS website in 15 minutes!!! When I pointed this out, the rep had the nerve to try scaring me into paying them EVEN MORE money for some "protection" service. But here's the kicker - just two months earlier, a different rep told me I was already in their "protection phase" and just needed to wait for resolution results! Complete contradiction! The worst part? All this waiting around has resulted in me accumulating more interest and penalties. And they admitted they haven't actually negotiated ANYTHING with the IRS yet. So why call me claiming they have a resolution??? Complete scam. Save yourself time and money - just contact the IRS directly. These people are absolutely useless.

This unfortunately happens a lot with tax relief companies. What they don't advertise clearly is that most of what they do is simply file paperwork that you could do yourself. The IRS has several resolution options available directly to taxpayers: installment agreements, offers in compromise, currently not collectible status, and penalty abatement requests. For an installment agreement, you can apply online at IRS.gov if you owe less than $50,000. The application process takes about 15-20 minutes. For an offer in compromise, there's Form 656 with instructions. For penalty abatement, you'd use Form 843. All these forms come with detailed instructions. The "protection" they're selling is likely just them acting as a third-party designee on your tax account, which basically means they can talk to the IRS on your behalf. But you can designate anyone with a Form 2848 (Power of Attorney) or Form 8821 (Tax Information Authorization).

•But wouldn't a tax relief company have special connections or ways to negotiate better deals with the IRS? I've seen their commercials where they claim to settle tax debts for pennies on the dollar. Is that completely made up?

•The "pennies on the dollar" marketing is very misleading. Those cases do exist, but they're extremely rare and only apply in very specific hardship situations. The IRS has strict guidelines for settlements through the Offer in Compromise program, using a formula based on your assets, income, and reasonable living expenses. These companies don't have special connections or backdoor deals with the IRS. The IRS follows its procedures regardless of who's calling. What these companies typically do is complete the same paperwork you could fill out, then charge a premium for it. Sometimes they even make situations worse by missing deadlines or providing incorrect information.

I used taxr.ai after a similar experience with one of those "tax relief" places. They charged me $3000 upfront and literally did nothing for 6 months. After I found taxr.ai at https://taxr.ai I uploaded my IRS notices and tax documents, and their AI analysis showed me exactly what relief programs I actually qualified for. Turns out I was eligible for penalty abatement because I had a clean compliance history, which saved me about $4,800 in penalties! What was helpful is they showed me the exact IRS rules and procedures that applied to my situation, so I knew exactly what to do myself instead of paying someone thousands to do simple paperwork. They also have templates for all the letters you need to send to the IRS. Total gamechanger compared to those ripoff tax relief places.

•How exactly does the AI part work? Does it just scan your documents or does it actually give tax advice? I'm worried about trusting important tax stuff to AI.

•Did they actually help resolve your tax debt or just give you information? I'm in a similar situation with about $23k in back taxes and penalties from 2020-2021 and wondering if this would actually be better than hiring someone.

•The AI scans your IRS notices and tax documents, then identifies specific tax issues, eligibility for relief programs, and procedural errors the IRS might have made. It's surprisingly thorough - it caught that the IRS had miscalculated some of my penalties which I wouldn't have noticed myself. They don't just give you information - they provide step-by-step instructions for resolving your specific tax issues. In my case, they generated the exact penalty abatement letter I needed with all the relevant IRS rules cited, and guided me through filing an installment agreement that I could afford. I ended up handling everything myself but with their guidance, which saved me thousands compared to hiring a representative.

Just wanted to follow up - I tried taxr.ai after posting here last week and it was super helpful! My situation was a bit complicated with self-employment taxes and some missed quarterly payments that led to big penalties. I uploaded my IRS notices and transcripts, and the system immediately identified that I qualified for First-Time Penalty Abatement which could save me over $4,000! The system actually generated a custom letter to the IRS citing the exact Internal Revenue Manual sections that applied to my case. I was also able to set up a reasonable installment agreement myself using their templates instead of paying some company thousands of dollars. Definitely recommend trying this instead of those ripoff tax relief companies.

If you need to actually talk to someone at the IRS (which is nearly impossible these days), I had success using Claimyr (https://claimyr.com). I was in a similar situation with a tax relief company that kept saying they were "working on my case" while doing nothing. After I fired them, I needed to talk to the IRS directly but couldn't get through after trying for literally weeks. Their phone lines are insane. Claimyr got me connected to an IRS agent in about 45 minutes instead of me calling hundreds of times. You can see how it works in their demo video here: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c I was able to set up a payment plan directly with the IRS agent for WAY less than what the tax relief company was going to charge me. The agent was actually super helpful once I finally got through to a human.

•Wait, so what exactly is this service? They just call the IRS for you? How does that work? Couldn't they just hang up on them too?

•Sounds like a scam. How would they get through if nobody else can? The IRS phone system is designed to limit calls no matter who's calling. I doubt this actually works and is probably just another way to take advantage of desperate people.

•They don't just call for you - they use a system that navigates the IRS phone tree and holds your place in line. When they reach a real person, you get a call to connect with the IRS agent. It essentially automates the calling and waiting process so you don't have to keep redialing for days. The reason it works is because their system can continuously redial and navigate the phone tree faster than a human could. The IRS doesn't hang up on them because they're actually getting through the legitimate phone system - they're just automating the process that would take you hundreds of manual attempts. I was skeptical too but it actually connected me to an IRS representative who helped set up my payment plan.

I need to eat my words from my previous comment. After waiting on hold with the IRS for 3+ hours EVERY DAY this week and getting disconnected each time, I caved and tried Claimyr. Honestly can't believe it worked - I got a call back within an hour with an actual IRS agent on the line. The IRS agent was able to go through my payment options and helped me apply for Currently Not Collectible status since I'm unemployed right now. This literally saved me from having to pay some tax relief company $2,000+ for the same service. Sometimes you have to admit when you're wrong, and I was definitely wrong about this.

Former tax resolution employee here. These companies are SUCH a scam. They prey on people who are scared of the IRS and don't understand how the system works. The business model is basically: 1. Charge huge upfront fees (usually $3,000-5,000) 2. Drag the case out as long as possible 3. Eventually file the same paperwork you could do yourself 4. Claim they "saved" you money by getting you a payment plan Meanwhile your interest and penalties keep growing while they drag their feet. The salespeople (who call themselves "tax consultants") make huge commissions off the upfront fees, which is why they're so aggressive. The actual caseworkers are overloaded with hundreds of cases and barely do anything.

•Is there ANY legitimate reason to use one of these companies? Like what if your tax situation is really complicated or you owe hundreds of thousands of dollars?

•There are very limited situations where professional representation makes sense. If you're facing criminal tax charges, have a complex business situation with multiple years of unfiled returns, or owe massive amounts (typically $250,000+) with significant assets to protect, then you should hire a tax attorney (not a "tax relief" company). For most people owing under $100,000 with relatively straightforward situations, you can handle it yourself. The IRS has standardized procedures for payment plans, offers in compromise, etc. They follow their own internal guidelines regardless of who's asking. A decent tax preparer can give you guidance for a fraction of what these companies charge.

Did you sign a contract with Optima? You might be able to dispute the charges with your credit card company if they didn't deliver the services promised. I'd also file complaints with the BBB, your state attorney general, and the FTC. These companies need to be held accountable for these predatory practices.

•Yeah I signed a contract but it was so vague about what they actually promised to do. Just said they'd "represent" me and "work toward resolution" without any specifics. I paid by direct withdrawal from my checking account, so I don't think I can dispute it like with a credit card. Been thinking about the BBB complaint though, good idea.
