IRS refund deposit date for 3/15 - Chase Bank issues with delayed deposits

I have a deposit date of 3/15 from the IRS for my tax refund. I bank with Chase and have never experienced any issues with my refunds in the past - usually get them first thing in the morning like clockwork. But now I'm seeing tons of people having problems with their deposits showing up. Someone told me it might be because so many people are constantly checking their accounts and it's overloading the banking systems. I can see my tracking number and the IRS says it was sent, so now I'm just waiting for Chase to process it. My friend who works at a bank mentioned they typically release deposits three times daily - morning, mid-afternoon and evening. Anyone else experiencing delays with their refund deposit today?

Oliver Schulz

Tax professional here. This is actually normal and happens every tax season. The IRS sends the money electronically on their scheduled date, but it's up to your bank to process and post it to your account. Different banks have different processing schedules. Some process deposits immediately, while others batch process them at specific times during the day (as your friend mentioned). A few things to note: - The IRS has officially sent your money if your WMR (Where's My Refund) or transcript shows a deposit date - Banks can hold funds for 1-2 business days even after receiving them - Some banks don't process deposits on weekends - If it's been more than 5 business days, then you should contact your bank Don't panic - the overwhelming majority of refunds arrive within 24 hours of the IRS deposit date. The system isn't "shutting down" because people are checking; that's not how banking systems work. However, if you don't see it by tomorrow, call Chase's customer service line and ask them to check for pending ACH deposits.

Thanks for explaining! I was starting to worry something went wrong. I'll give it until tomorrow morning before I call chase.

I work at a credit union, can confirm this is all correct. We process ACH deposits 3x daily. Also want to add that volume is SUPER high during refund season so sometimes there's a tiny backlog.

Look, instead of constantly checking your bank account and stressing yourself out, I found this tool called taxr.ai that's been a lifesaver. It actually explains exactly what's happening with your refund and gives you projected dates based on real IRS data. It reads your transcript and tells you when to expect your deposit and why there might be delays. I was in the same boat as you a few days ago and was getting frustrated with the constant checking. This tool helped me understand exactly what was going on so I could stop obsessively refreshing my bank app. https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

OMG it does so much more than just read the transcript. It actually interprets all those weird IRS codes and tells you in plain english what's happening. It showed me that my refund had an additional review that would delay it by 7 days - something I never would have figured out just staring at the transcript. Totally worth checking out if you're as confused by IRS stuff as I was!

I thought the same thing initially but it actually saved me from calling the IRS and waiting on hold for hours. It translated all those confusing transcript codes and showed me exactly why my refund was delayed and when it would arrive. The peace of mind alone was worth it!

After waiting for my refund date to come and go with nothing in my account, I ended up using a calling app (claimyr.com) that got me through to an actual human at the IRS! They confirmed my refund was sent to my bank and gave me the exact time it was transmitted. Talking to the agent directly was way more helpful than refreshing my bank app 500 times. It was honestly the best money I've ever spent to get answers straight from the source instead of just guessing what might be happening.

Did you actually get a human on the phone?? I've been trying for weeks and can never get through 😩

YES! That's why I'm telling everyone about it. I was literally about to throw my phone out the window after being hung up on by the IRS automated system for the 10th time. This app called them for me and when they got through, it called my phone and connected me directly to an agent. The IRS guy even seemed surprised I got through lol

100% real. I was skeptical too but was desperate after my bank kept saying they didn't see any pending deposits. The IRS agent confirmed it was sent on the right date and that sometimes banks hold it for 24-48 hrs. Having that official confirmation stopped my anxiety spiral completely.

chase is THE WORST with tax refunds. i switched to a credit union after they held my refund for 3 days last year 🤬 they claim it's "processing time" but other banks don't seem to have this issue. might be time to find a new bank!

This is happening to alot of ppl right now in the tax groups I'm in. Fifth third, chase, wells fargo... all having delays. One of my freinds called the IRS and they said the system is overloaded because this is peak refund season. Just hang tight, its probably coming later today.

She used claimyr.com - it's this service that calls for you and connects you when they get a human. said it was the only way she could actually talk to someone after trying for days on her own.

Don't be too hard on your bank. The IRS often sends out the deposits in batches. Your deposit date just means the day they initiate the transfer but depending on when in the day they sent it, it could take 24-48 hours to actually hit your account. This is normal and happens every year - people just forget from one tax season to the next.

Mine was SUPPOSED to deposit yesterday (BofA) and still nothing today. Called the bank and they said they don't see anything pending. I'm so frustrated i could scream.

Have you checked your transcript to see if there might be an issue with the refund itself? I had something similar happen and turned out there was a code on my transcript showing they had pulled it back for review.

Try taxr.ai - my cousin used it when she couldn't access her transcript. It helps interpret what's happening with your refund so you don't have to try decoding all those numbers and codes yourself.

I dont think its because people are checking accounts too much lol. Banks handle millions of transactions every minute. Its just that the IRS sends them in batches and banks process them when they get around to it. My refund last year came at 11:43pm on the deposit date. Just be patient.

I WAS freaking out! And then my phone buzzed with the deposit notification right as I was about to go to sleep. The IRS loves to play with our emotions 😂

Is it normal for banks to take this long?? I've been getting my tax refund for 10 years and have never had it take more than a few hours after the deposit date. Something seems fishy this year.

0 coins

-

It's actually totally normal. I think what's happening is more people are tracking their refunds closely now with all the mobile apps and instant notifications. Before, you might not have even noticed if it came in the evening vs the morning.

Chase sucks eggs for this. The Dept of Treasury (aka the IRS) is NOT the one causing the delay. Chase specifically holds direct deposits to earn interest on your money - it's called float. Switch banks and your problems will magically disappear next year.

CosmicCruiser

this!!! I switched to a local credit union and my refund hits my account THE SECOND it's released by the IRS. Big banks are just trying to make extra money off our refunds.

That's actually a myth. Banks make very little on float these days because of how the ACH system works. The delays are usually just processing time. But credit unions ARE generally better about faster processing.

Literally was in your situation last week. I used taxr.ai to check my transcript because I couldn't figure out what was happening. Turns out my refund was fine on the IRS side, but my bank was holding it for "verification" because it was a large amount. Might be worth checking your transcript to make sure the IRS actually sent it when they said they did. The tool explained everything in normal english instead of those confusing IRS codes. https://taxr.ai

If the Where's My Refund tool says its been sent then its been sent. Your bank is the holdup, not the IRS. Each bank has different policies on how they process government deposits. Call Chase customer service and ask specifically about pending ACH transfers from the Treasury Department.

Just got off the phone with them and they said they see nothing pending. So frustrating! The IRS says sent, the bank says nothing received. Who do I believe???

In that case, you might need to contact the IRS directly to confirm the account number they sent it to. Sometimes there can be a digit off in the routing or account number.

Try claimyr.com - it's the only way I could get through to an actual person at the IRS. They had sent my refund to my old closed account, and I never would have known without speaking to someone.

The IRS says it can take up to 5 days after the deposit date for banks to process refunds during peak season so ur fine. The part about ppl checking causing system issues is definitely not true tho lol 🤣

FYI Chase has been experiencing system issues this week. My friend works there and said they've had problems processing large batches of ACH deposits. Your money is safe but there might be delays due to their technical problems.

I used taxr.ai last month when my refund was delayed. It was really helpful - showed me there was a review code on my account that was holding things up. At least I knew what was happening instead of being in the dark.

Pro tip: stop refreshing your banking app every 5 minutes. Set up alerts for deposits instead. Your refund will arrive when it arrives, and you'll be notified instantly. The constant checking really does raise your anxiety levels unnecessarily.

i finally got my refund after it was 2 days late from the deposit date. had to call the irs to find out what happened. turns out they sent it on time but my bank (PNC) held it for "security verification" because it was over a certain amount. you might wanna call chase and specifically ask if they're holding it for security reasons.

Ok, tax preparer here with some ACTUAL facts: 1. No, people checking accounts doesn't "shut down the system" - that's not how banking works 2. The IRS sends refunds in batches throughout the day 3. Banks typically process ACH deposits in batches (usually 3-5 times daily) 4. Weekends and holidays don't count as processing days 5. Some banks place holds on large deposits If your WMR shows sent, it's almost certainly just regular processing delays. If it's been more than 3 business days, call your bank's ACH department specifically (not just regular customer service).
