IRS keeps dropping calls when trying to get extension - any tips?

I've been trying to get through to the IRS for an extension, but every time I call, the line drops in the middle of the conversation. This has happened three times now. It's so frustrating! Has anyone else experienced this? Any tips on how to actually get someone on the line and keep them there?

I found a way to solve IRS call dropping issues, watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEfRjkvVnJA

Ugh, I feel your pain! 😫 The IRS phone system is a total nightmare. I've had calls drop on me too. It's like they're purposely trying to make it impossible to get help.

Maybe try calling at different times of the day? I've heard early morning or late afternoon can be better.

Good idea! I'll give that a shot. Anything's worth a try at this point lol

I found a method that actually works to get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video explaining it: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

Sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

$20? That's highway robbery! The IRS should provide better service for free.

I get the skepticism, but it seriously saved me hours of frustration. Worth every penny IMO.

How long did it take for them to get someone on the line?

It took about 2 hours, but I didn't have to sit there listening to hold music. They just called me when an agent was ready.

Have you tried filing for an extension online? It's usually much easier than dealing with phone calls.

I've been in the same boat for weeks now. It's ridiculous that we pay taxes but can't even get basic customer service from the IRS. 🤬

Preach! 🙌 The whole system needs an overhaul.

Here's what I've learned after dealing with the IRS for years: 1. Be persistent. Keep calling, even if it takes days. 2. Have all your info ready before you call. 3. Try calling right when they open or an hour before they close. 4. Use the IRS website to check if there are any known issues with their phone systems. 5. Consider using a tax professional who might have better access. 6. If all else fails, you can try contacting your local Taxpayer Advocate Service for help. Hope this helps someone out there in the struggle! 💪

Wow, thanks for the detailed advice! I'll definitely try calling at different times.

What's the Taxpayer Advocate Service? Never heard of it before.

It's an independent organization within the IRS that helps taxpayers resolve problems. They can be a lifesaver when you're stuck!

lmao imagine thinking the IRS actually wants to help us 🤡 They're probably laughing at us while sippin' margaritas paid for by our tax dollars

Bruh, that's a bit much. They're probably just understaffed and overworked.

I heard they're updating their phone systems soon. Maybe wait a few weeks and try again?

Pro tip: If you're calling about an extension, make sure you're using the right number. The IRS has different lines for different issues.

Oh, I didn't know that! Do you know which number I should be using for extensions?

For individual tax return extensions, try 800-829-1040. For business extensions, it's 800-829-4933. Good luck!

I've dealt with this exact same issue! What worked for me was using a landline instead of a cell phone - the connection seemed more stable. Also, make sure you're not on speakerphone or using Bluetooth headphones, as those can cause connection issues. Another trick is to press a random number key every few minutes during the hold time to keep the line "active" - sometimes the system drops calls it thinks are inactive. Hope this helps and you can finally get through! 🤞
