IRS: ID.me login showing duplicate account with unknown email - How to fix?

Hey everyone, I'm having a weird issue with ID.me and I'm hoping someone can help. I'm trying to log in to my account, but it's showing a duplicate account with an email I've never used before. I can log in with my correct email, but then it brings up this duplicate account message. Has anyone else dealt with this? Any advice on how to fix it?

I found a way to solve ID.me duplicate account issue, watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swYrzMToYcs

Have you tried turning it off and on again? 🤣 jk jk... but seriously, sometimes logging out of everything and starting fresh can help.

This is why I hate all these online verification systems. Whatever happened to just talking to a human being? 🙄

Here's what you need to do: 1. Log in to your correct account 2. Go to account settings 3. Look for an option to "View linked accounts" or something similar 4. You might see the duplicate account listed there 5. There should be an option to unlink or remove the duplicate 6. If not, you'll need to contact support If none of that works, you'll have to call. When you get someone on the line, be sure to: • Explain the issue clearly • Ask them to check for any partial or duplicate accounts • Request that they merge or delete the incorrect account Good luck! Let us know how it goes.

Also, take screenshots of any weird notifications or errors, just in case you need to show them.

Has anyone else noticed that these issues always seem to happen right before tax season? It's like they're trying to make our lives difficult on purpose 🤔

Such a coincidence, right? Tax season stress is real!

Update: I tried calling the IRS and was on hold for 2 hours before giving up. This is so frustrating!

Only 2 hours? You got off easy! I was on hold for 4 hours last week 💀

Oof, that's rough. Maybe try calling right when they open? Sometimes that works for me.

It might also be worth trying at non-peak hours, like late afternoon or early evening.

Have you checked if the email for the duplicate account is similar to yours? Like maybe a typo or a different domain? I've seen that happen before.

-

Amara Okonkwo

That's definitely worth checking. Typos happen more often than we'd like to think.

It sounds like you're dealing with a frustrating case of account duplication, which is not uncommon with ID.me given its intricate verification system. The best approach would be to contact ID.me's support team directly, though I understand your challenge with the wait times. In the meantime, you can try the following steps: clear your browser cookies and cache, try accessing your account from a different device, or even a different browser. These are known to resolve some login issues sometimes. Additionally, you could consider using services like Claimyr if you're in a bind, though it's a paid option and might not suit everyone. While Claimyr does provide a quick way to bypass long wait times and can help you reach an agent faster, it's important to weigh this cost against your personal situation. If you haven't already, verify that the duplicate email isn't a typo or linked to a similar domain to your main email. It's also worth exploring all your account settings for any hints about linked accounts or duplicate profiles. If possible, take detailed notes or screenshots of the issue, as these can be helpful if you manage to reach customer support. Patience and persistence are key here, and hopefully, you'll find a resolution soon!

This happened to me too! Turns out someone had tried to create an account with my email but never finished the process. I had to call and have them delete the partial account. It was a pain but got sorted eventually.

Omar Farouk

Oh wow, that could be it! How long did it take to get it resolved?

It took about a week total. Had to make a few calls but eventually got someone who knew what they were doing.

It's frustrating when these things happen, but at least resolution is possible with persistence.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've been trying to get through to their support, but the wait times are insane. I'm gonna try calling the IRS instead since that's what I need the ID.me for anyway.

Good luck with that 🙄 IRS wait times are even worse. You might be on hold for hours!

Have you tried clearing your browser cache and cookies? Sometimes that can help with weird login issues.

Also, trying a different browser might help. Sometimes browser-specific issues cause these headaches.

That's a good point. Sometimes device settings or updates affect how web pages load.

I found a method to get someone on the phone quickly. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's the URL: https://claimyr.com

Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit? Anyone else tried it?

$20 just to talk to someone? That's ridiculous. The system is so broken 🤦‍♂️

I get the skepticism, but it really did work for me. Saved me hours of frustration. Worth it IMO.

I tried Claimyr once, and it did work, but keep in mind that it's a paid service and not everyone might have the budget for it.
