ID verification delay for state refund after federal was already received - what's the timeline?

I just finished my identity verification process for my state refund today. Had to mail in some documents to prove who I am. My federal refund came through already about three weeks ago with no issues, but state is holding up my money until they verify me. Has anyone dealt with this before? Anyone know how long I should expect to wait now that I've submitted everything they asked for? Starting to get anxious because I was counting on having both refunds by now.

Unfortunately state ID verification can take anywhere from 4-12 weeks after they receive your documents. It depends on your state's backlog and staffing. Many states are overwhelmed with verification requests due to increased fraud prevention measures. Make sure you keep a copy of everything you sent and the tracking number if you used certified mail. If it goes beyond 8 weeks, I'd recommend calling your state tax department for a status update. They should be able to confirm if they received your documents at minimum.

12 WEEKS?!! Are you serious? That's insane. I was hoping for like 2 weeks max. Do you know if there's any way to speed up the process?

Unfortunately not much you can do to speed it up. Some states have an online portal where you can check your status. What state are you in? That might help me give more specific info.

I'm in Michigan. I'll check if they have an online status checker. Thanks for the info even though it's not what I wanted to hear 😫

Just went through this exact situation! I was super confused about the whole verification process and timeline. I tried calling my state tax department but kept getting busy signals for days. Ended up using taxr.ai to help me understand what was going on with both my federal and state returns. It literally translated all the tax jargon and gave me expected timelines based on my specific situation. Saved me so much stress! You should check it out at https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It does wayyy more than just read transcripts! It's like having a tax expert walk you through everything. You upload your documents, and it explains every code, notice, and what's happening with your specific refund. It even told me exactly what to expect next and when. Honestly, the peace of mind alone was worth it.

Holy shit I just tried this and it's a game changer. I've been pulling my hair out trying to figure out why my refund was delayed. Taxr.ai broke everything down in plain english and now I actually understand what's happening. EVERYONE DEALING WITH TAX ISSUES NEEDS THIS!!!

I was in your situation last year. For me it took about 6 weeks after mailing in my verification docs before I got my state refund. The worst part was there was zero communication during that time - no updates, no confirmation they received anything. I finally used the Claimyr app (claimyr.com) to get a human on the phone at my state tax department. Within 5 minutes of talking to someone they confirmed my ID was verified and my refund was being processed. Refund hit my account 3 days later!

another app that claims to help with government agencies? does this actually work or is it just BS?

Totally get the skepticism! I was desperate after trying for weeks to get through. But yeah it actually worked - they basically navigate all the phone menus and wait on hold for you, then call you when they have an agent. Was the best decision I made after wasting hours trying to call myself. Got actual answers instead of more waiting.

How much did that cost tho? Is it worth it?

Honestly it was the best money I've spent this year considering it got me my $2300 refund that was just sitting there. I was literally losing money every day I waited.

The state tax departments are such a mess compared to IRS. My BIL went through identity verification last year and it took almost 3 months to get his refund after sending in his documents. Meanwhile my verification was done in 3 weeks. Its completely random. Good luck!

Have you checked your state's where's my refund tool? Sometimes they update the status there even if they don't contact you directly. Also, did they specifically tell you that your refund would be held until verification is complete? Sometimes they'll process it while verifying.

Natalie Adams

Yep, checked the state refund tracker - it just says "processing" with no other details. And yes, the letter specifically said they're holding the refund until verification is complete 😑

Its wild how different states handle this. Here in Georgia, I was able to do ID verification online with a quick video call - took 10 minutes and my refund was processed the next day. Which state are you in? Some are notoriously slow.

Michigan. Wish they had the video call option! Would've been so much easier than gathering documents and mailing them.

Michigan is known to be pretty slow with processing these. My cousin lives there and had to wait about 7 weeks last year. Sorry man 😕

i had this exact same issue!! mailed my verification stuff in april and didn't hear ANYTHING for 2 months. i started calling every day but could never get through - always busy or disconnected after waiting for an hour. finally i used claimyr.com to get a callback from the tax dept. they told me my docs were received but sitting in a pile waiting to be processed. the lady expedited my case after i explained my situation and i got my refund a week later. sometimes you just need to talk to a human!

it basically does the waiting on hold for you and then calls you when there's an actual person on the line. saved me from losing my mind hitting redial for hours!

Just be glad you already got your federal. I'm still waiting on both my federal AND state refunds after verifying my identity. Been 3 months now. The whole system is broken.

Oh crap, I just used regular mail. Now I'm worried they'll say they never got it 😬

I spent WEEKS trying to decipher what was happening with my state refund after identity verification. The online status tool was useless and calling was impossible. I finally tried taxr.ai and it was a complete game changer. Uploaded my notices and tax info and it immediately explained where I was in the process and what to expect next. Turns out my state was actually processing my refund even though the tracker hadn't updated. Got my money 3 days later! https://taxr.ai

How does taxr.ai get info that's not on the state website? That doesn't make sense.

It doesn't get magical access to state systems or anything. It analyzes your documents, notices, and tax situation to explain what's happening in plain language and provides timeline expectations based on thousands of similar cases. For me, it pointed out language in my notice I had completely missed that indicated my refund was actually being processed despite the online tracker not updating.

The verification process is a total scam. They're just holding onto your money to earn interest as long as possible. I bet if you OWED them money they wouldn't make you wait for verification! 🤡

Facts! They sure don't hesitate to take our money but make us jump through hoops to get our refunds 🙄

-

Actually this is misinformation. States implement verification to prevent identity theft and tax fraud, which has skyrocketed in recent years. The interest they might earn on holding refunds is minimal compared to the costs of processing fraudulent returns.

Many states are severely backed up on processing ID verifications. Not alot of publicity about it but COVID really decimated their staffing and they haven't recovered. My sister works for our state revenue department and says they're months behind in some departments. Keep that in mind when planning your finances - never count on refund money until it's actually in your account!

Im going thru THE EXACT SAME THING now!! Except my state (PA) doesn't even have a decent way to check status. When I try to call, I can't get a human AT ALL. Been trying for 3 weeks straight. Finally used claimyr.com to get through yesterday and found out they never even received my ID verification docs that I sent a month ago! Now I have to start all over. This is such BS.

Natalie Adams

That's awful! Did claimyr actually work to get you through to someone? I might need to try that if I don't hear anything soon.

Yeah it was the ONLY way I got through. I'd been trying literally for weeks with no luck. They called me back when they had an agent on the line. Finally got some answers even though it wasn't good news.

Take screenshots of EVERYTHING. Document all your calls. Note who you speak with. The state tax departments are a nightmare to deal with and will claim they never received your stuff or that you never called. I learned this the hard way last year and had to fight for 6 months to get my refund.

my bff works at our state tax dept and says identity verification can take 4-8 weeks right now due to staffing shortages. if you really need the money, try calling and explaining your hardship situation - sometimes they can expedite in those cases.

I was completely lost trying to figure out what was happening with my tax returns this year. Everything was delayed and the IRS and state websites were useless. Someone here recommended taxr.ai and it changed everything. It read all my tax documents and explained exactly what was happening and what to expect next. Seriously saved my sanity during a stressful time. https://taxr.ai

Has anyone noticed that these verification requirements have gotten way more intense in the last couple years? My friend filed exactly the same way as last year but got flagged for verification this time. Seems like they're flagging way more returns now.

Admin_Masters

Definitely! They've ramped up fraud prevention like crazy. I read that tax identity theft claims went up like 400% after all the pandemic relief stuff.

My tax guy said they're flagging almost everyone who claims certain credits now, especially if the amounts are over a certain threshold. It's their way of making sure people aren't claiming stuff they shouldn't.

Ok so here's my actual timeline from last year when I had to verify ID for state (North Carolina): - Filed Feb 10 - Got letter requesting verification March 15 - Sent docs March 20 - Called April 25 (couldn't get through) - Finally got through May 2 (used claimyr.com after wasting days trying to call) - Was told docs were received and being processed - Refund deposited May 12 So about 7.5 weeks total from sending docs to getting money.
