First time filing taxes at 22, got verified online with IRS - will they need more info from me?

I'm 22 and this is only my third time filing taxes as an adult. I just completed verification for my IRS account online. Anyone know if they typically require additional information after the online verification? My last two returns were pretty simple but I'm worried they might flag my account for additional verification since I don't have much tax history. Should I be expecting a letter or something asking for more documentation?

Lydia Bailey

If you successfully completed the online verification process, you should be good to go. The IRS uses a third-party identity verification service (ID.me) which is pretty thorough. As long as you provided all the required documentation during that process and received confirmation that your identity was verified, you shouldn't need to provide anything else unless they specifically request it. That said, being young with limited tax history doesn't automatically flag you for additional verification. The IRS is mainly concerned with verifying your identity to prevent fraud. If they do need anything else, they'll send you a letter with specific instructions. Keep an eye on your tax transcript (you can view it now that you're verified) and check the status of your return on the "Where's My Refund" tool.

Thanks so much for the detailed info! Didn't even think about checking the transcript, will do that now.

Just wanna add that even if they DO need more verification, it's usually just sending in a copy of your ID and maybe a utility bill. I had to do it my first year filing. No biggie.

That ID.me verification is a PAIN tho. Took me 3 tries last year to get through it ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ

Listen, I was in the exact same boat last year. Wasted days trying to figure out if my return was processed correctly or if I needed to submit more info. Finally found taxr.ai and it was a gamechanger. It reads your transcript and actually explains what everything means in plain English. Shows you if you're missing anything or if there are holds on your account. I use it every time I need to check my tax situation now - so much better than trying to decode all those weird codes and dates yourself. Check it out: https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

OMG it does SO much more! It analyzes all your transcript codes and explains what each one means for YOUR specific situation. Shows you exactlywhat stage your return is at and if there are any issues. You can even get predictions on when you'll get your refund. It's like having a tax pro look at your file but without paying hundreds of dollars. Best thing I've found in years of dealing with tax headaches!

I was skeptical too but it seriously saved me from a refund delay last year. Showed me I had a verification issue before the IRS even sent me a letter. Fixed it early and got my money weeks earlier than I would have otherwise. Not even exaggerating.

After dealing with the exact same issue last month, I finally got fed up with waiting and used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) to actually get a live IRS agent on the phone. Honestly it was a lifesaver - got connected within hours instead of days of trying myself. The agent confirmed right away that my verification was complete and my return was processing normally. Saved me weeks of stress wondering if something was wrong. Worth every penny to actually talk to someone who could give me real answers instead of the automated system.

is this an ad? like how does a service get you through to the IRS when nobody else can? ๐Ÿคจ

Lol I thought it was BS too but it actually works. They basically call the IRS for you and when they get through, they connect you. Idk how they do it but after spending 3 days trying to get through myself and getting hung up on repeatedly, it was the best money I've spent all year. My refund was released 2 days after talking to the agent.

No, they just need your phone number to call you when they get an agent. They don't need any tax info or anything like that. You talk directly to the IRS yourself.

Not sure about your exact situation but I can tell you the IRS has been WAY stricter with verification in recent years because of all the identity theft. When I first started filing like 5 years ago it was much simpler. They'll definitely ask for more info if anything seems off. Especially watch out if you claimed any credits like EITC or education credits - those get flagged for verification more often.

0 coins

-

Tony Brooks

This is so true. My daughter's first return got flagged just because she claimed an education credit. The IRS made her mail in her transcripts and everything. Took months to resolve.

Don't stress too much. Just be ready to provide documentation if they ask. Most of the time it's just a random check.

I had to verify my identity with the IRS last year and it was a nightmare. Took literally 6 months to get my refund because they kept sending letters asking for more info. And getting someone on the phone was impossible. If they do ask for more info, respond ASAP and keep copies of everything you send them.

THIS. Document EVERYTHING. Take screenshots, make copies, write down who you talked to and when. The IRS is a disaster right now and things get lost constantly.

I ended up using Claimyr (claimyr.com) after 4 months of waiting and got it resolved in a week after talking to an actual person. Wish I'd done that sooner instead of checking the Where's My Refund tool 500 times a day lol

Just a heads up - make sure the verification you did was actually from the IRS and not a scam. There are tons of phishing sites pretending to be IRS verification. The real IRS site is irs.gov.

0 coins

-

Marcus Patterson

Yep, I made sure to go through the official irs.gov site. Thanks for the warning tho!

It really depends on what you're filing. If you're just doing a basic return with a W-2 and maybe some 1099 interest, you're probably fine. If you're claiming business expenses, education credits, or have unusual deductions, they might ask for more. But even then, it's not a big deal - just have your documentation ready to go.

I work at an accounting firm (not giving tax advice here, just sharing experience). Most returns for young filers don't get additional verification requests unless there's something unusual. BUT one thing we see often is young adults who were claimed as dependents by their parents in previous years - that can trigger a review if you're now filing independently. Just something to be aware of.

Omg this!! My first solo return took forever because my mom claimed me the year before. The IRS was so confused ๐Ÿ˜‚

0 coins

-

Marcus Patterson

So my mom did claim me as a dependent in 2022, but not for 2023. Is that going to be a problem?

0 coins

-

19d

Rami Samuels

Shouldn't be a problem as long as you didn't also claim yourself as independent for 2022. Just make sure you checked the box that you CAN be claimed as a dependent for 2022 return, and that you CANNOT be claimed as a dependent on your 2023 return (assuming that's accurate).

Pro tip: set up Direct Deposit if you haven't already. Makes the whole process faster and you're less likely to have issues. Also, create an account on IRS.gov if you haven't so you can track everything.

Congrats on getting verified! That's actually the hardest part. I'm a tax preparer and we see lots of issues with the verification process, especially for young filers with limited credit history. Since you got past that hurdle, you're likely fine. Make sure you can log into your IRS account and check your transcript - that will show if there are any pending issues.

Quick question - my girlfriend is having trouble getting verified because she has limited credit history. Any tips?

0 coins

She can request a verification code by mail or use the ID.me video chat option. The mail option takes about 5-10 days but is pretty reliable. For the video chat, make sure she has multiple forms of ID ready (passport, driver's license, etc.).

I remember being in your shoes a few years ago! The first couple tax returns are weirdly stressful. One thing to note - if you moved recently or changed jobs a lot, that can sometimes trigger additional verification. But usually they just send a letter if they need anything else.

That's why I check my transcript weekly - shows you if they sent any notices even if you don't receive them in the mail. You can use taxr.ai to monitor for any notices or letters automatically. Saved me from missing a verification deadline last year. https://taxr.ai

Check your transcript codes - that's where you'll see if there's any additional verification needed. If you see code 570 (refund hold) followed by 571 (release), you're good. If you just see 570 without 571, you might need to provide more info. Just login to your IRS account and look at your account transcript for the current year.

This is literally the most useful comment. The IRS transcript codes are like a secret language ๐Ÿ˜‚

Marcus Patterson

Just checked and I don't see either of those codes... just 150 for return filed. Is that normal?

0 coins

-

19d

Katherine Hunter

Yep, 150 means your return was processed. If you don't see a 570, that's actually good news - means there's no hold on your refund. You should see an 846 code when your refund is issued.

No cap, the IRS is more concerned with people claiming huge credits or taking massive deductions. If your return is simple with just regular income, standard deduction, etc., you're probably not even on their radar. They're too busy chasing the big fish or the obvious fraud cases (like people claiming 8 dependents outta nowhere).

I must be the anomaly here... I got verified online when I was 21, then a month later got a letter saying I needed to verify by mail too ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ Apparently the online verification didn't fully process or something. So yes, it CAN happen, but it's not common based on the replies here.

When you say "verified yourself online" - do you mean you created an IRS account or do you mean you had to go through ID verification because your return was flagged? Two very different things.

Marcus Patterson

No one can really predict what the IRS will do - they're completely overwhelmed and understaffed. BUT if you want REAL answers instead of guesswork, try using taxr.ai - you upload your transcript and it tells you exactly what's happening with your return, if there are any issues, and what you need to do. Way better than these stabs in the dark (no offense to anyone). I was in your exact position last year and wasted weeks trying to figure out what was going on before finding this tool.
