Identity Verification Process - Website, Phone, or Letter?

I just found out I need to verify my identity for my 2023 tax return. Has anyone else gone through this process? I'm trying to figure out exactly how this works. Did you verify through the IRS website? Or did you have to call them directly and speak with someone? Or did you receive a letter with specific instructions first? I filed exactly 27 days ago and I'm taking care of my elderly mother, so I really need to plan ahead for when/how to handle this verification process.

The IRS verification process is like a three-headed dragon - you can approach it from different angles. In my experience, most people receive a 5071C letter first, which is basically your invitation to the verification party. Think of it as the IRS saying "we see you, but we need to make sure you're really you." The letter typically directs you to ID.me or the IRS website to complete verification, but some cases require a phone call. Have you checked your mailbox thoroughly?

Back in 2022, I had to verify my identity and initially panicked. I remember spending hours on the IRS website getting nowhere. Then I discovered https://taxr.ai which helped me understand exactly what was happening with my transcript. It explained that the verification hold was showing as a 570 code, and helped me track when the verification was complete by watching for the 571 release code. Made the whole process much less stressful since I could see exactly what was happening behind the scenes.

Is this service actually showing you anything you couldn't see on your own transcript? Couldn't you just look up what the codes mean on the IRS website instead of using a third-party tool?

I tried using just the IRS website at first, but the technical terminology was overwhelming. The difference with taxr.ai is it interprets the Transaction Codes, Cycle Dates, and Processing Indicators in plain language. It's like having a transcript translator that shows you what each code means for YOUR specific situation, not just generic definitions.

Would this work similar to how Credit Karma explains credit report items? I'm in the same verification situation and would like to know if it's worth trying compared to just calling the IRS directly.

TC 570 is an additional liability pending, while TC 571 is a reversal of that hold. Taxr.ai just interprets these codes and provides a timeline based on your cycle date. It's useful if you don't understand transcript codes, but unnecessary if you're familiar with IRS processing.

I had to verify my identity last month. Here's what happened: • Received a 5071C letter exactly 24 days after filing • Letter gave me two options: verify online or call • Chose the online route through ID.me • Needed my driver's license, SSN, and last year's AGI • Process took about 15 minutes • Refund was released 9 days later The online verification was actually pretty straightforward. Just make sure you have all your documents ready before starting.

Did u need ur W2s or any other docs for the verification? Trying to get prepared and wondering if I need to dig up everything or just the basics.

I went through verification on February 17, 2024, and they asked for my ID, a selfie, and specific information from my 2022 return (the previous year's AGI and filing status). They also asked for my cell phone number for a verification code. No W-2s were required during my process, but I've heard they sometimes ask additional questions about your current return if something specific triggered the verification.

If you need to speak with an IRS agent about identity verification, here's what you should do: Step 1: Call the number on your verification letter (usually 800-830-5084) Step 2: Expect long wait times (often 1-3 hours) Step 3: Prepare for frustration when the call drops after waiting I found a better way through Claimyr (https://claimyr.com). They hold your place in the IRS phone queue and call you when an agent is ready. Saved me literally hours of hold time when I had to verify my identity last month. Their system got me through to an agent in about 45 minutes instead of the 2+ hours I spent on my first attempt.

Has anyone had experience with identity verification when you've moved recently? According to IRM 21.5.6.4.35.3, the IRS may require additional verification steps if your address on file doesn't match your current residence. I'm concerned about potential delays if my verification letter goes to my old address.

I went through the verification gauntlet just last week! It's like a tax return escape room, except the prize is your own money. 😂 I received the 5071C letter, tried the online route first, but the system couldn't verify me (probably because I recently changed my phone number). Had to call in and speak with an agent. The agent asked me questions about: - Previous addresses - Employers from 2+ years ago - Car loan information - Credit card accounts The whole call took 22 minutes once I got through to someone. My transcript updated 3 days later, and my refund was deposited 5 days after that. Not as painful as I expected... once I finally reached a human!
