Filed Taxes Same Day - Partner's Approved While Mine Shows Processing?

Is it unusual that my partner and I filed our separate returns exactly 14 days ago (March 19th), and his has already been approved while mine is still showing as processing? We both used the same tax software and filed within 37 minutes of each other. I've checked my transcript 6 times since filing, and it shows processing status code 570. My AGI is $87,450 with capital gains of $12,340 from several investment transactions, while his return was more straightforward with just W-2 income. Should I be concerned about this timing difference or is this expected given our different financial situations?

This is actually quite normal, particularly when there are differences in the complexity of the returns. In your case, it seems likely that the capital gains transactions might be triggering additional verification processes. The IRS often prioritizes simpler returns with just W-2 income, which can sometimes be processed in as little as 7-10 days. More complex returns with investment income might take anywhere from 21-45 days, depending on current processing volumes and whether any manual review is needed.

So basically the more stuff you have on your return, the longer it takes? My brother and I filed on the same day too. He got his refund last week but mine is still processing. I have a small business though, so I guess that's why. 😩

Doesn't this seem inefficient on the IRS's part? Shouldn't they have automated systems that can handle capital gains as easily as W-2 income? Or is it that they're specifically flagging certain types of income for potential audit purposes?

I'm seeing this pattern a lot lately. People with similar situations are experiencing different processing times. The factors that seem to affect processing time include: • Complexity of return (investments, business income, etc.) • Whether you claimed certain credits • If there are any mismatches with information already on file • Current IRS workload in your processing center It's frustrating when you're waiting, but completely normal.

Did you claim any credits? That can delay things. My return took forever last year. Your investments might be the reason. Could you check WMR? Any messages there?

IMO the WMR tool isn't always accurate for complex returns. Have you checked ur transcript for TC 570/971 combos? Those usually indicate verification is happening. Might explain the delay vs ur partner's return.

Wow, I had no idea investment income could cause such different processing times! I always thought a return was a return in the IRS's eyes. Learning something new here about how they prioritize different types of returns.

According to IRS Publication 5192, returns with investment income are subject to additional verification procedures that typically extend processing timeframes by 1-3 weeks. This is especially true during peak filing season when resources are stretched thin. If you're concerned about the delay, you could try contacting the IRS directly, but good luck getting through on their general line. I spent 4+ hours on hold last week before giving up. Eventually used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) to get through to an agent in about 15 minutes who confirmed my return was just going through normal verification for my investment income. Nothing was wrong - just standard procedure for returns with capital gains.

Is this service actually legit? March 29th I called the IRS directly and got through after only 45 minutes. Maybe I just got lucky.

Thank you for sharing this! I tried calling the IRS about my delayed refund last year and gave up after being on hold for 2 hours. Wish I'd known about this service then.

How much does Claimyr cost exactly? I'm waiting on a $3,241 refund and getting anxious since it's been 28 days since I filed. Would be worth it if I could just get confirmation nothing's wrong with my return.

The timing difference is actually a window into how the IRS prioritizes processing! I'm so frustrated by how they handle this every year. Simple returns get fast-tracked while those of us with investments or business income wait FOREVER with zero transparency. It's like they're punishing people for having diversified income sources! If you're counting on that refund soon, you might want to adjust your expectations - I've seen investment-heavy returns take up to 8 weeks in recent years. 😡

What's the status code showing on your transcript? Have you checked for any notices or letters from the IRS? Did you e-file or paper file?

The processing differential you're experiencing is likely due to the Automated Underreporter (AUR) program that pre-screens returns with Schedule D transactions. The system performs automated basis verification against 1099-B data transmitted by your brokerages. When multiple transactions are present, the Discriminant Function System (DIF) scoring algorithm may flag the return for additional verification, particularly if there are any discrepancies between reported basis amounts.

Your situation is actually better than what happened to me and my wife last year. Her return was processed in 8 days while mine took 78 days! And my return was actually simpler than hers, but I had changed jobs mid-year which apparently triggered some kind of verification. Compared to other scenarios I've seen, your 14-day wait with investment income is still within normal parameters. The IRS processing system is like a black box - completely unpredictable compared to other government services.

It's like traffic on the highway - sometimes you sail through, sometimes you hit unexpected congestion. I've filed identical returns two years in a row and had completely different processing times. Last year: 9 days. This year: 31 days and counting. The IRS batch processing system is mysterious in how it routes different returns.

Have you checked if your return might have been selected for identity verification? Sometimes returns with significant changes from previous years get flagged. Did you have investment income last year too, or is this new? What about your filing status - any changes there?

I had almost exactly this situation with my husband last year! My return had some stock sales and his was just W-2 income. His refund came in 9 days, mine took 23 days. I called the IRS after 2 weeks of waiting and they told me returns with capital gains transactions go through a different processing pipeline. The agent said it's completely normal and nothing to worry about. By the time I got off the phone, my transcript had actually updated with a direct deposit date! Yours should update soon too.
