Chime Bank requesting 1040 Form & ID verification for tax refund deposit - anyone else?

Just got a message from Chime saying they need my 1040 and ID to release my tax refund deposit. Never had this happen before. Been using Chime for 3 years with no issues. Anyone else dealing with this? Starting to worry its some kind of scam.

This is actually legitimate. Banks are required by federal regulations to verify large deposits, especially tax refunds, to prevent fraud. Many online banks like Chime have increased their verification requirements. Make sure you're responding through official Chime channels only - their app or official email, not clicking random links.

Before sending anything, you might want to check your transcript with taxr.ai - it'll tell you if your refund is actually being deposited and when. Only costs $1 and can save you from potential scams. Check it out here: https://taxr.ai

Make sure to blur out any sensitive info before sending. Just leave visible whats necessary

This happened to me with my refund last month. It's legit but definitely verify it's coming through official Chime channels first. I had to submit my 1040 and driver's license through their secure portal in the app. Took about 48 hours to get approved and then my refund was released. Just make sure you're not clicking any links in emails - go directly to the app or their official website to upload documents.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Did they give you any heads up that this verification was coming or did it just pop up randomly when your refund hit? I'm wondering if there's a way to get ahead of this next year

Same thing happened to me with Wells Fargo last year when I got a bigger refund than usual. It's definitely becoming more common across all banks due to increased fraud prevention measures. The key is making sure you're using official channels - never click links in emails or texts. Log into your Chime app directly or call their official customer service number. They should have a secure document upload feature in the app. Also keep copies of everything you submit and get confirmation numbers if possible.

Good point about keeping copies and confirmation numbers! I learned that the hard way when my documents got "lost" in their system once. Also pro tip - take screenshots of the upload confirmation page too, saved me hours of back and forth with customer service when they claimed they never received my stuff šŸ“±šŸ’¾

Had this exact same situation with Chime about 6 months ago. It's definitely legitimate - they're being extra careful with tax refunds due to all the fraud that's been happening. What helped me was calling Chime's customer service directly (the number from the back of your card or their official website) to confirm the request was real before uploading anything. They walked me through the whole process and I had my refund within 2 business days after verification. Just never upload docs through email links - always use the official app or website portal!

That's really reassuring to hear! I'm glad you mentioned calling their customer service directly to verify - that's such a smart move. I was worried about being overly cautious but with all the scams out there it's better to be safe. Did they ask for anything beyond just the 1040 and ID, or was that sufficient for verification?

This is definitely becoming more common! I work in banking compliance and can confirm that financial institutions have ramped up verification requirements significantly in 2024-2025, especially for tax refunds due to the massive increase in refund fraud. The key red flags to watch for: legitimate requests will ALWAYS come through your secure app portal or official website, never through email links or text messages. If you're unsure, call Chime directly using the number on your debit card (not any number provided in the message). They should be able to confirm if the request is legitimate and guide you through their secure upload process. Better to spend 5 minutes verifying than risk your personal info!
