DDD of 4/24 with TurboTax to Chime - Still No Deposit Despite Their 'Early' Claims
Has anyone else had issues with Chime not posting refunds early like they advertise? My situation: • Got Direct Deposit Date of 4/24/2024 • Used TurboTax with refund going to Chime account • Still nothing in my account as of today • Many people seem to be getting deposits already I'm new to US tax system (my third year filing) and don't understand why Chime claims "get paid up to 2 days early" but makes us wait the full time. I have rent due soon and planned accordingly. Is this normal for Chime this year? Any advice appreciated.

It seems like there might be a few possible explanations for what you're experiencing. First, while Chime does generally offer early deposits, this is somewhat dependent on when they actually receive the payment notification from the IRS, which can vary. Additionally, the IRS sometimes sends payments in batches, so your particular batch might be scheduled exactly on your DDD rather than earlier. It's also worth noting that "up to 2 days early" is their maximum, not a guarantee for every transaction.

Thanks for explaining this. So basically their "up to 2 days early" is more marketing than guarantee?

I've seen this happen in previous years too. Back in 2022, I had a similar experience where my deposit came exactly on the DDD despite Chime's early deposit claims. It seems to happen more during peak tax season when they're processing higher volumes. Have you checked if your TurboTax account shows any updates on the refund status?

I've used both Chime and Current for tax refunds. Current consistently deposited 2 days early, while Chime was more hit-or-miss. Last year my Chime deposit came exactly on the DDD, not early at all. This year I switched to Current and got my refund 2 full days before my DDD. The "early deposit" feature seems to work better with some banks than others, and Chime appears to be less consistent compared to their competitors lately.

I'm SO FRUSTRATED with how impossible it is to get straight answers about these deposits! I spent THREE HOURS trying to reach someone at the IRS about my similar situation last week. Finally used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) and got through to an agent in like 20 minutes. They confirmed my payment had actually been sent but was still in transit to my bank. I was ready to scream before finding that service - saved me from spending my entire day on hold!

• Is this service legitimate? • How much does it cost? • Do they need personal information? • What's the actual process they use? I'm skeptical about third-party services for accessing government agencies.

Thank you for sharing this! According to IRS Publication 5136, taxpayers have the right to quality service and to speak with an IRS representative in a reasonable amount of time. Unfortunately, the practical reality rarely matches this standard. Services that help navigate the system can be valuable time-savers during peak periods.

Have you checked if your refund was reduced for any reason? On March 28th, I had a similar situation where my expected amount didn't match what was deposited. On April 2nd, I discovered they had offset part of my refund for a student loan payment I wasn't aware of. Sometimes the delay is because the final amount is being adjusted.

I didn't realize refund offsets could cause delays in the deposit timing! Is that because the Treasury Offset Program (TOP) needs additional processing time before releasing the remaining funds to the designated financial institution?

This happened to someone I know last year. The IRS held their refund for about 3 extra days while processing an offset for past-due state taxes. They never received any advance notification, just a letter explaining the adjustment about a week after the reduced refund finally arrived.

I experienced this exact scenario and discovered there's actually a systematic reason behind it. The Automated Clearing House (ACH) network that processes these transfers has specific settlement windows. If the IRS initiates your payment after a certain cutoff time, the payment gets queued for the next processing window. Chime can only post deposits early when they receive the payment metadata ahead of the actual settlement date, which doesn't always happen with IRS refunds due to their batch processing protocols.

Have u tried checking ur tax transcript instead of WMR? Sometimes the WMR tool doesn't update but ur transcript might show if there's an issue or if it's def been sent. I had similar probs last yr & transcript showed a code 971 that explained everything. BTW if it's already 4/24 or after, def call IRS tmrw!

The whole "early deposit" thing with these online banks is like a restaurant promising your food will arrive in 30 minutes but it might be 15 or it might be 45. It's not an exact science! I've been watching the tax refund groups on Facebook like a hawk, and it seems like Chime is being particularly inconsistent this year. Some people got theirs 2 days early, some 1 day, and others (like you and me) right on the DDD. I'm a bit worried about next year now...

This is exactly what I needed to hear! Been driving myself crazy thinking I did something wrong. At least now I know it's just how the system works.

Lol that restaurant analogy is spot on! 😂 Had same issue last yr and nearly missed a car payment cuz I was counting on that "early" deposit. Now I always plan for the actual DDD and consider anything earlier a bonus. Btw if you're really in a crunch, check if your employer offers instant pay options through services like DailyPay or Branch!

I've been using Chime for three years now, and their early deposit feature has become less reliable with tax refunds specifically. Last year, my paycheck consistently came 2 days early, but my tax refund came exactly on the DDD. This year, same thing - paycheck early, tax refund right on time. When I called Chime about it, they explained that IRS deposits are processed differently than regular payroll deposits. They can only release funds early when the sending institution (IRS) provides certain pre-release information, which apparently the IRS doesn't always do consistently.

This makes so much sense! I had the exact same experience with my direct deposits coming early but tax refund right on the date.

Thank you for sharing this detailed explanation. Really helps understand the distinction between different types of deposits.
