Make sure you're documenting ALL your attempts to contact them. Dates, times, how long you waited, etc. If they try to penalize you for not responding by the deadline, you'll have evidence that you made reasonable attempts to comply but couldn't reach anyone.
After reading this thread, I checked out taxr.ai and it literally saved me thousands of dollars with my audit situation. I was about to just pay what the IRS said I owed because I couldn't figure out how to properly respond, but the AI showed me exactly what documentation would prove my case. Best $$ I ever spent on tax help. Way cheaper than hiring a pro too.
I've been on the fence about trying this. Did you actually have to upload any sensitive docs or just describe your situation?
You just answer questions about your specific situation and it gives you personalized guidance. Super easy to use and definitely worth checking out if you're dealing with audit stress! https://taxr.ai
PSA for everyone: If you're paying tax prep fees from your refund (refund transfer), your money ALWAYS goes through SBTPG first, and their website/customer service is terrible. This isn't unique to any specific tax prep company - TurboTax, H&R Block, Credit Karma, TaxAct all use SBTPG for this. Next year, if you want your refund faster, pay the prep fees upfront and have IRS direct deposit directly to your bank!
Had this SAME issue and finally got it resolved! SBTPG kept showing "account not found" but after using taxr.ai I could see exactly why my refund was held up - turns out there was an education credit verification that I had no idea about. Their explanation made everything clear and I knew exactly when my money would arrive. No more stressing and checking 5 different websites all day long.
It's way more than that. It identifies issues, explains every code in normal human language, shows a timeline of everything happening, and even predicts your deposit date based on your specific situation. I've been looking at transcripts for years and still missed things that it caught.
just checked it out and it showed me that my refund was actually adjusted $476 higher than what i filed for?!? would have never caught that on my own
I know this is frustrating but unfortnately the verification process is designed to be strict to prevent identity theft. No way around the 24-hour lockout. The IRS takes security seriously even if there customer service is terrible.
After the most frustrating experience with the IRS website, I finally just called them using Claimyr.com to get through. The agent was able to verify my identity over the phone and tell me exactly what was going on with my return. It was the only way I could talk to a live agent without wasting an entire day on hold. My refund got released the next day!
Yep it actually works! I was skeptical too but was desperate after trying for days to get through on my own. Talking to an agent got my refund released so fast after it had been sitting there for months. They can see things in the system that we can't access.
Keep in mind there's a difference between your expected refund, adjusted refund, and issued refund. Code 150 shows tax per return, 768 shows calculated refund, 898 shows offsets, and 846 shows what was actually issued to you. The difference is almost always due to an offset of some kind.
idk why the IRS makes this so complicated. Like why can't they just have a website that clearly shows "we took $410 to pay your state tax debt" instead of making us decipher these weird codes? It's almost like they don't want us to understand what they're doing with our money š¤

I was in this exact situation 2 months ago. They told me a letter was mailed June 5, and I didn't get it until June 24! When I called to complain they just said "mail delivery is beyond our control" and wouldn't extend my response deadline. Such BS.

My husband and I file married joint and both got identical letters about our refund adjustment. His arrived 4 days before mine even though they were supposedly mailed same day! Mail system makes no sense.
