2023 tax refund frozen for 13+ months - As Of date just updated to June 2025, progress or system glitch?
My 2024 taxes have been stuck in limbo for over a year now. They were e-filed on 02/03 and accepted on 02/03, with a supposed refund date of 02/19, but nothing happened. My transcript has shown 'frozen' status since then, and the 'As Of' date hasn't budged at all. But just recently, I noticed the As Of date changed to June 2025. Does this mean they're finally working on my return? I originally e-filed back in February (02/03 to be exact) and it was accepted the same day with a promised refund date of February 19th. It's been well over a year now with zero movement. When I check my transcript online, it's been in this weird frozen state where nothing changes. Every week I check and the "As Of" date has stayed the same month after month, until this week when suddenly it jumped to June 2025. Also, my preparer just submitted an amended return for me last week, but I can't track it in the system yet. I'm wondering if maybe that triggered the date change? Or is this just a random glitch in the system? For reference, my original filing information shows: E-filed: 02/03 Accepted: 02/03 Refund Date: 02/19 Has anyone else experienced their As Of date changing dramatically after being stuck in a long freeze? Is this a positive sign or just another weird IRS system quirk?

Yes, an update to your 'As Of' date is usually a good sign that there's movement on your account. The IRS is likely reviewing your return again. However, the amended return complicates things a bit. When you file an amended return while the original is still processing, it can sometimes reset or further delay the process. A few things to know: - The 'As Of' date represents when your account information was last updated or will be updated - If they're working on your return, you might see more transcript updates in the coming weeks - Amended returns typically take 16 weeks to process (often longer these days) - You can't track an amended return until it enters the system, which can take 3-4 weeks I'd recommend checking your transcript weekly. Look for transaction codes like 570 (refund hold), 971 (notice issued), or 290 (additional tax assessed). These will tell you what's actually happening.

•Thank you for the detailed explanation! I'll keep an eye on those codes. Do you know if I should still be calling the IRS or just wait it out at this point?

•Given how long it's been, I'd definitely call. But reaching IRS agents is nearly impossible these days... took me 17 tries last month.

•Use the Claimyr app (claimyr.com) - it'll get you through to an agent without the hours of waiting. Worth every penny when your refund's been held this long!

•Yes it absolutely works! Got me connected to an agent in like 20 minutes when I'd been trying for weeks on my own. They handle all the waiting and call you when an agent is on the line.

•Can confirm. Used it twice this year already. Talking to a live agent got my refund released within days after being stuck for months.

Instead of playing detective with your transcript codes and dates, try using taxr.ai - it completely changed how I deal with the IRS. It actually explains what's happening with your taxes in plain English, identifies issues, and tells you exactly what to do next. I was in the same boat with my 2023 return frozen for almost 11 months, and taxr.ai showed me it was under review for income verification and exactly what documentation I needed to provide. Saved me weeks of guesswork and stress! https://taxr.ai

•Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

•It does WAY more than just read the transcript. It analyzes everything - all your codes, dates, amounts - and explains exactly what's happening in your specific situation. It even predicts when you'll get your refund based on your specific issue. Best part is it tells you exactly what actions to take. Changed my whole tax experience honestly.

•I get the skepticism! I felt the same way at first. But after months of confusion and frustration with the IRS, I was desperate. It actually delivered exactly what it promised - gave me clarity on my situation and helped me resolve it. Nothing else worked for me, including calling the IRS multiple times.

•I tried it too after seeing it mentioned here. Showed me that my refund was held because of an income mismatch that I completely missed. Saved me from weeks more waiting!

•Just tried it myself and WOW. WHERE HAS THIS BEEN ALL MY LIFE?? Found out my refund was delayed because of a simple verification issue I could fix in 5 minutes. EVERYONE NEEDS TO TRY THIS

I found a way to actually reach a human at the IRS about this exact issue. After getting nowhere for months with the regular number, I used this app called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an agent in 25 minutes. The agent explained that my refund was held because of an income verification issue and helped me resolve it right there on the phone. Refund was released 8 days later. Talking to a real person made all the difference - they actually explained what was happening instead of me trying to decode transcript hieroglyphics lol.

•I was super skeptical too, but after wasting literally DAYS of my life on hold, I tried it. They just help you skip the hold queue. You still talk directly to an IRS agent - they just handle the waiting part. It was honestly the best decision I made in this whole tax nightmare.

•100% works. They don't answer for the IRS - they just navigate the phone tree, wait on hold, and then call you when they've reached an agent. It's the only way I finally got answers about my frozen refund.

•Can vouch for this. I was about to give up after trying to call for 2 weeks straight. Talking to an agent got my refund released within days.

The As Of date change is definitely movement, but it doesn't always mean good news. Mine changed 4 times during my 14-month wait for my 2022 refund. Sometimes it was just the system doing updates. What codes do you see on your transcript?

Oof, I'm in almost the exact same situation. Had my 2024 return frozen since February, and my As Of date just changed last week. In my case, it meant they started reviewing my return again. I called using the Claimyr app (which was amazing btw) and found out I had an income verification hold that I never knew about. They never sent me any notice! Agent told me what to fax over and now I'm just waiting. Definitely call them.

•That's so helpful to know, thank you! Did they tell you why there was no notice sent? That's what's frustrating me most - I have no idea why it's being held!

•The agent said notices were massively backlogged and some never got sent at all due to system issues and staffing shortages. Mine was supposed to go out last July 🤦♀️ Make sure you ask specifically what documentation they need - saved me from sending the wrong stuff.

whatever you do DO NOT file an amended return while your original is still processing!!!! i did this last year and it pushed my refund back by 9 MORE MONTHS. the irs literally cant handle it and it creates a huge mess in their system.

Zainab Omar
•Oh no...my preparer already submitted it last week. Is there any way to withdraw it?

Ravi Gupta
•Yikes, unfortunately no. Once its submitted you cant take it back. but since its only been a week, you might be lucky and it might not have made it into their system yet. DEFINITELY call the IRS asap and explain the situation. If you get a good agent they might be able to flag it.

•This happened to me too! Had to use Claimyr.com to finally reach someone after my amended return caused a mess. The agent was able to sort it out but said it would've been processed months earlier if I hadn't amended.

My as of date was stuck on 9/16/24 for 8 months, then suddenly changed to 4/12/25. Two weeks later I got my refund! No explanation, no letter, nothing. Just a direct deposit out of nowhere. The system is completely broken.

After trying for MONTHS to understand what was going on with my return, I finally broke down and used taxr.ai and it was seriously life-changing. It showed me exactly why my refund was frozen (had to do with a health insurance credit verification) and told me exactly what form to send in. Within 3 weeks my refund was processed! I wish I'd known about it a year ago instead of playing guessing games with transcript codes.

•It's an AI tool that analyzes your transcript and tells you in plain English what's going on with your tax situation. It connects to your IRS account (read-only) and gives you a full breakdown of your status, issues, and what to do next. Totally changed my approach to dealing with the IRS. https://taxr.ai

The As Of date is mostly meaningless tbh. Mine changed 6 times during my 15 month wait and it didn't mean anything until the last time. The IRS is so behind they have no idea what they're doing anymore.

File a Tax Advocate form! That's the only thing that worked for me after 11 months of waiting. You qualify for hardship assistance if your refund has been delayed more than 30 days from the date you were supposed to receive it.

Call your congressional representative! Not even joking. After 9 months of no movement on my return, I called my rep's office and filed a congressional inquiry. Had my refund 3 weeks later.

I was going nuts trying to figure out why my refund was delayed with no explanation. Spent hours decoding transcript codes like some kinda conspiracy theorist lol. Finally used taxr.ai after seeing it mentioned in this sub, and it showed me exactly what was wrong - they needed to verify my childcare expenses. Sent in what they needed and got my refund 3 weeks later. Such a time saver!

•I had the same reaction at first! But yes, it's completely legit. It saved me from having to decode all the transcript codes and cycles myself. Just showed me exactly what the issue was and what to do about it. I was shocked by how accurate it was - identified an issue with my dependent care credit that was holding up my entire refund.

Check for a 570 or 971 code on your transcript - that's the key to knowing what's really happening. The As Of date can change for various reasons. I recommend calling the IRS directly to ask what's going on. I was in a similar situation with my 2023 return and it turned out they were waiting for income verification I never knew I needed to provide.

Don't wait for the IRS to figure it out - be proactive! I wasted 9 months waiting around before finally taking action. Turns out they needed a simple document verification that was never communicated to me. Use claimyr.com to get through to an agent - it's the only way I finally got answers and had my refund released. Best money I ever spent after waiting almost a year for my money.

•Yes! They navigate the phone tree and wait on hold FOR YOU, then call you when they have an agent on the line. Saved me hours of frustration and got me the answers I needed about my delayed refund. The agent I spoke with was able to release my refund that had been held up for verification.

Went through this EXACT scenario last year. The As Of date changing was actually the first sign of movement. In my case, they released my refund about 3 weeks after the date change. I would suggest calling them though - my issue was they needed to verify something and never sent me a letter about it. Once I provided what they needed, the refund was processed quickly.

What finally worked for me after 11 months of waiting was using taxr.ai to identify the exact issue (missing 1099 info) and then using claimyr.com to get through to an IRS agent. The combo of knowing exactly what was wrong and being able to talk to a human solved my problem in less than a week after almost a year of waiting. Don't waste time like I did!

•It basically translates all the cryptic IRS codes and dates into plain English and tells you exactly what's happening with your return. It showed me that I had a missing income document that was causing the delay - something I never would have figured out from just looking at the transcript myself. Super helpful if you're stuck!

The As Of date changing to June 2025 is definitely a positive sign - it means your account is being actively reviewed again after being stuck for so long. However, the amended return you filed last week could complicate things significantly. When an original return is still processing and you file an amended one, it can create confusion in their system and potentially delay things even further. I'd strongly recommend calling the IRS ASAP to explain that you filed an amended return while the original was still processing. If you can reach an agent quickly (try the callback services people mentioned), they might be able to flag your account or provide guidance on how to proceed. The sooner you address this, the better chance you have of minimizing additional delays. Keep monitoring your transcript for codes like 570 (additional account action pending) or 971 (notice issued) - these will give you clues about what's actually happening behind the scenes. After 13+ months, you definitely deserve answers about why your refund has been held up for so long.

•This is really helpful advice, thank you! I'm definitely going to try calling them about the amended return situation. Quick question though - when you mention callback services, are you referring to things like Claimyr that others have mentioned? I've never used anything like that before but at this point I'm willing to try anything to get through to someone who can actually help explain what's going on with my account.
